Advancing with Watercolor : "Morning unfolds at the Cafe" How the Artist Looks at the World

Welcome to my Studio - In this video - and the next series of episodes - I will focus on how the visual artist looks at the world. It may seem that this does not need explanation but in truth the artist looks at the world in different ways to help them to process the complexity and arrive at a simple beginning. This is a technique like any other and the are tools and methods we use to trick the eyes to see the world in a simple fashion. These methods help the beginner as well as the mature artist.
Through the development of the painting "Morning unfolds at the Cafe" I show examples of the sorts of things an artist notes when looking at their subject - in particular shapes...We start by making note of the big shape and so relating smaller shapes becomes easier.

Firstly, thank you again. I realized how an artist looks at a photo of reality. Someone like me was already planning how to tackle the perspective of that window and its structure, the window on the left etc, etc. The secret is to whittle down everything into the chosen shapes. The important shapes. You even altered the Interior, figures etc. We all need to understand how to tackle a photo and judge whether it's valid or not. As always, the fascination of the light in your paintings comes out. This is what I'd love to achieve. Beautiful painting. I decided to paint along and be really bold with the colours. Not bad, this time I've learned how important contrast is, and how important it is to keep in mind the FADING of colours. I know I need to do my own work, but this was valuable. It won't be binned ( trashed) LOL

This is the 3rd video of yours that I have watched and I want to say how wonderful they have been. I am trying to advance in watercolour and despite all the wonderful tuition on RU-vid, have struggled to find really good tuitions, until I found yours. I loved the graded wash ones very much, they were just what I was looking for and now this on motif is brilliant - something that until now, I didn't realise I was missing eeded! I am going to check out your interior ones next as again, It's just what I am looking for! Thank you very much!

Brilliant tutorial. This totally explodes any preconceived notion I ever had about painting a watercolor. It makes total sense to build the layers of washes starting with large light and dark fields, and then working in by painting details after the lights and darks have been applied. This painting has echoes of Hopper, whose work I have always adored. The tutorial also helps me understand the process of great railroad watercolorists like Ted Rose and Howard Fogg. Very inspiring video!

I too am a big fan of Hopper as a master with shape and design - the quality of his cityscapes - He is also a master of catching light - the loneliness is also something that intrigues me about Hoppers works...

Had to watch it again Gary. I love your work. I love light, intense sunlight, particularly when it illuminates a darker area and there’s contrast. It has a contemplative quality, nostalgic even, one ponders. Your paintings capture that quality, which is why I love them so. I’m still painting watercolour and aspire to your standard and type of style. Thanks again Gary. Take care my friend and fellow.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to share your knowledge and talent with us. I started watercolor painting during the pandemic lock-down. I looked at many online sites to see from which "teacher" I could best learn and yours really stood out. Your paintings are beautiful: your technique, as well as the content. Also you live in one of my favorite parts of the US ( I live across the border, in Canada) and so many of the outdoor scenes you paint are immensely appealing. I will keep at it, pay close attention to what you say and hope to eventually create paintings that I won't be embarrassed to share :-) Have a great weekend and stay safe.

Thank you for the lesson. I am trying to put the big shapes to use. It is a bit of a challenge for me I admit because of being such a detailist. When able to use outside lighting in a building or on one I plan to put the advice to work. That was quite a color drying shift. I tend to avoid indantrone blue to protect the paper. Your familiarity with the pigments shows. Thank you and I hope you find some tasty coffee.

It always amazes me how, starting with a simple pencil outline, your paintings seem to get lost into a sea of blurred color shapes where nothing is recognizable anymore and then, as by magic, a few stokes suddenly reveal a whole world. Demo after demo I’m still wondering if it’s a technique that can be learnt or pure talent.
@youvegottoseethis5615
@youvegottoseethis5615 4 года назад
Damien Thouvenin , talent carried me a long way, it filled my ego to hear about myself as a child and some times even today. Yet I believe if I had less talent or none, but more will and sincere interest and drive and open mindedness to learn more fundamentals and techniques and actually worked hard at it, I may have produced something of real value and beauty rather than just above average family art gifts.And to think I made some money at it. Ha. Art is hard, has rules and takes a lot of work. Art isn't a this or that secret. It's work. I'm finally ready to have to work at it. That's why I'm here. To learn from someone both talented and working. Revealing the real magic. P.S. Your description of your observation of water color painting nailed the process.

I like to work with standing - because I can stand back easily and view the painting from a distance - my training is pretty standard - 4 years diddling in art school - 50 years working in the field :) I am grateful for art school because for 4 years 3 times a week 3 hours a session we had to engage in figure drawing

Hello Gary, at 11'34'' and later, you are using a brush which is made by Loew Cornell. It seems to have good versatility and a very long and precise point. I do not see it on the link you add below your video. Different color of hair. Could you give me that reference please? Thank you so much for sharing your art. I like the approach of human beings and of the human condition in your art. Depicting all these moments when life is extraordinary simple, light, simple and sweet. Which a different style and still your personal approach, the result of your work reminds me of Edward Hopper, what is not nothing... . Even if your humility must suffer from that statement, you are probably the best teacher I know on the web (which is a wide place).
