Suzuki for me bullet proof and styling looks proper retro. My fave hands down. Would love to see Suzuki build an offroad version geared more to the Paris - Dakar winning bikes used in the mid 80s.

That's because Suzuki hasn't really produced anything new for at least four years, in this case the V-strom is an 18 year old bike with updated clothes and some electronics , this time styled by an ex employee of Lego. Rides nice though and well priced.

Best RIDING adv bike. That v-twin is SMOOTH! I'm on my second V-Strom. To me, everything else feels like a compromise on the street. And although I go do all the stuff that any other ADV does, the real truth is that 99% of my miles are on the daily commute. 😁

Good Vid thank you, Refreshing to hear the V-Strom get some love for a change, and not compared to bikes over twice the price. I Have the poverty spec version with cast wheels, got it for well under 10K and think its brilliant. Also sounds great with an after market pipe.

Nice review, I ride a bmw1250 daily,bought a vstrom 1050 for a winter commuting bike. If it was a choice out of enjoyment factor,be the vstom. I have rode most of the adv bikes on the market, and the strom is the one I'd still choose, few reasons ,great proven motor, simplistic. Great handling . End of the day ,it's fantastic price.

Interesting comparison, I had the previous generation vstrom 1000 XT and it was an excellent bike. Even as a Honda fan boy, I would buy another vstrom no problem at all. The bike is unfairly dismissed as a bit of a poor mans choice, the only problem with the bike was a snatchy throttle which maybe has been addressed by the new ride by wire throttle. The rest was brilliant as a real world all round bike it was superb, the transmission was perfect, the riding position was all day comfortable and when treated with acf50 the finish held up as well as any other bike I have had. You will also shortly see the usual Suzuki finance packages and offers, which make the bike even more attractive. The Honda switch cluster on the left bar is ridiculous, eleven buttons, no backlighting and the TFT working only with Apple devices ? As an Android user it would be a no go. The Suzuki switchgear is simple and the screen is perfectly acceptable. Unfortunately the weight on the strom has crept up. Get rid of the crash bars and end can, and I suspect the weight could get down to the 232kgs of the previous version. It looks great in the red and white too, I would have to avoid a test ride otherwise I would probably sign up for the new one. It may not have the cred of some of the other bikes but it is a great bike for riding at sensible speeds in total comfort and I always felt it had a comforting feeling that it would get you home no matter what. I wouldn't bother with the aluminium luggage, I had the three box set on mine and while it was great quality (SW Motech) the panniers were mounted very high, above the level of the seat, which could make getting on and off a bit awkward.

@citizenpmd565
@citizenpmd565 3 года назад
@@ne21 yep, you learn to ride around it by slipping the clutch on mini roundabouts etc but it's still there. I queried it on the first service, dealer said the bike has an old engine, which is true, and in order to get it through emissions regs it runs very lean. They said best fix is to install a booster plug which fools the engine into thinking it's colder than it is, which helps it run rich slightly and smoothing out the throttle at lower speeds.

I would give the V-Strom an extra half point for having a better front mudguard for the purpose of the bike. They are not serious offroaders and the lower rear of that front guard will keep more splash off the engine. I am torn on opinion of fly by wire accelerator. I prefer a cable because if the electronics dies and the cable breaks you could rig something up with the cable if you really had to; but not with the fly by wire. However with fly by wire you can have a real cruise control which I do not remember hearing mentioned if either had cruise control. Good honest review. Thanks.

I don't know how much the reviewers emphasized this, but there's almost a 50 cc displacement difference between these two bikes (Honda being more cc's). That's issue 1. Issue 2 is we don't know what "Traction Control" setting either bike was in. I can almost guarantee that if the V was in TC1 it would lose in a drag race. Issue 3 is Honda's 21 in. front wheel is trail/off-road oriented, the Suze 19 inch is more for the road. Both bikes will work acceptably (fine) in opposite environments, it's just that both bike manufacturers went in different directions as to the primary use. I agree Honda may be going toward competing with the BMW 1200(1250), whereas the V is staying in its niche. The weight on the Honda AT can vary from 501 to 553 lbs. depending which model or whether a DCT version. Honda generally does not build light bikes. So the AT can either be a little lighter than a V or 15-20 lbs heavier. Lastly, issue 5 is we don't know how tall the reviewers are and how they found the differing ergos. I know the Honda AT was a tall bike when i first hit the showrooms and I fit fine on my 2014 V Strom. Maybe it's different a few model years later. All that said, the 2020 Honda may be the better bike by a little but may not be worth the extra money. I think either way, we can't go wrong with either bike, and it will come down to taste, riding experience and pricepoint.
@buteos8632
@buteos8632 3 года назад
And that's the only worthy review coming out of a comparison as this, as you said this bikes are catering for different targets but magazines and their minions cater only for the most expensive ones. One other big point is V Strom is still manufactured in Japan, so not a cheap chinese built, this might be one of the most important aspects if someone wants to keep the bike for many years. Cheers

I’m 5’8 so I’d opt for the Vstrom especially with the 19 “ front wheel and the larger screen. The complexity of Honda’s information system would drive me nuts. It has to be intuitive. I much prefer the lower, more comfortable seat on the Suzuki.

@@zedcharlie Well that seals it then, the entire 1250 engine engineering platform is shite because 'you know of 2 GS's......" and how many of these engines are in service and will go into service. Just crazy. I have owned two BMW bikes that were absolutely faultless... I'm not claiming however that issues don't crop up. Perspective people.
@dadmadforgot4050
@dadmadforgot4050 2 года назад
Love the 'smash cam' comment. Sorry but the technology your trashing is brilliant... subjectively. Im not a BMW fan in particular BTW. Call it as it is. At least BMW try and make investment into new tech and ideas, like Honda is atm. Suzuki is stone age by comparison, it's churning out old tech with a bit of sparkle on top and not really trying that hard. Doesn't make it a bad bike by any means, especially considering the price. In fact I would definitely consider one - looks good in red imo. The GS is a better more accomplished bike though, in every area that counts... you have to pay for it though.

Love the Africa twin adventure sport. Ultimate touring bike. Comfort. Tech. Huge tank range. Solid engine.i like these chats with your mate even if my opinion varies from yours 😃 hrc colours all the way though. That black one is a bit meh. You can get a deeper oem seat for it too more padding. Bottom screen is for speed display when you are using the top as full screen navigation with CarPlay. Use it all that time. It’s state of the art layout. Surprised how many people are missing this. The Honda system is complicated but after a few days it’s incredibly powerful when you sort it all out.

@Mike Warner I think much of the 'reviewer problem' is the amount of buttons (and Hondas manual is dire to be fair), but if you spend a few days with it and learn how it all works, its even better than the systems ive used on the BMW bikes ive owned. Carplay is fantastic if you have a phone in your pocket or mounted with a quadlock for instance (you can even power them from the USB port or 12V adapter on the adventure). The dual screen configuration seems to throw a lot of people. but as I said, the top screen is for a full screen carplay navigation system with the lower one showing you speed and engine settings etc - this is critical to seeing the speed your are doing and engine settings while travelling (the lower panel is LCD not LED and it refreshes slower so this can sometimes be catching up with the LED panel - only noticeable if you study them both closely while riding and both are active). But you can easily flip back out and in of navigation by pushing down on a top button between the main engine screen and navigation maps on the fly (pushing up on a button gives you access to Siri in your helmet too!). Its a very sophisicated system that seems to be getting a lot of flak because reviewers really just dont put any time at all into trying to learn it. - I mean the battery voltage (and loads of other stuff - trips, average miles, consumption - so much detail its a tech lovers wet dream) can be seen on screen 3 of 4 by pushing the mini buttons left or right - I found that out almost immediately. Electronic suspension shows up on page 4 of these screens and you can set it for single rider, single rider and passenger, and single rider and passenger and luggage. Suspension adjusts automatically (which you can hear) which is very cool. Sounds all very complex, but a few hours sussed all this out. I like chopsie and his friends dialogue, but I do think a little bit of time with some of the bikes they test might help people understand what its all about, surely doing a review means you put in some background effort before presenting it to a lot of people. I mean pushing buttons really isnt rocket science. And they both seem like bright chaps - and im almost 50 myself, so its definitely not an age thing. ive got the adventure sport with electronic suspension, the fatter OEM honda seat, DCT etc, love it. Its not my only bike mind you, ive a S1000RR heavily modified and two Fireblades both heavily modified. I have owned a few GS as well in the past. Christ I just wrote a book!

You have to see them in real life tough. In real life the vstrom looks small,low and feels like you've rode that bike before. Africa twin on the other side,seeing it in real life up close,it looks tall,menacing,maybe slightly intimidating and attractive as hell. I test rode both myself and there was significantly more enjoyment from the Africa twin,it's just a different experience. I bought the Africa Twin 2 weeks ago and I gotta say it's the best decision I did so far at my 27 years of age

I once heard the multistrada 1000 as a sportsbike with a different position of riding & I'd say the v strom 1050 is a sports tourer with a different position of riding. I bought the v strom 1050xt & it's a great bike in my opinion, africa twin was good on test ride but v strom is a better road bike.

@@olaeinairoda I haven't taken the Africa twin off road yet because frankly she's still shiny and new but I can tell you it is the better bike on road and on Twisties it's a beauty,you can lean with it quite a lot and you'll feel confident doing so. In my opinion it is a light bike. Now I use this bike in London commuting so I might have developed the skills to tackle traffic but I was faster and more nimble than a guy in a mt-09 the other day filtering and dashing through thick traffic and he was mostly in my rear view mirror and that's

Great enjoyable story on both bikes. Loved the video and really enjoyed at the end you chose the bike you liked not on price. We dont all live in the UK and the Suzuki is actually more expensive than the basic Honda where I live. Great reporting guys got a laugh and good information on both bikes. Thanks for a great video.

"The Honda has everything, 10." Except quick shifter and blipper, electronic suspension and keyless ignition. Not that an adventure bike really needs those things, but not really 10 then? Great film though, you and Greg are the best head to head reviewers on YT!

Fun review and well done. I guess the New white, 2018 Vstrom 1000 in my drive way for only $8,900 with center stand, is the best value of all. Loving it! IMHO, the looks are pretty good too ( for adventure style). AS for the Honda in this review, to not win but cost $3,000 more makes no sense. When one thinks about the majority of time spent riding on the bike to cover miles, not just short jaunts off road... THE SUZUKI is the most under rated bike ever!!

I bought my 2019 ATAS to replace my old XT600. My wife upgraded her older 2006 650 V-strom with a 2017 model, and she also owns a DR650. I wanted a single bike that I could ride to keep pace with her on either her V-strom or the DR, and the AT fits the bill perfectly. I was disappointed that this review did not include any dirt or off-road riding, which is where the AT truly shines. We did do a 2000 mile road tour through the US desert Southwest with friends (FJ-09, FZR 1300) and my AT had no problem keeping pace, at times, predictably, crawling up the tailpipe of the 650 'strom...but I prefer the view, just the same ;) For me, the bottom line is that to review/compare the AT without including off-road riding is like comparing a Toyota FJ with a Chevy Blazer without getting either one dirty.

I has 3 Vstroms, last was in 2019 the 1000 XT with Akrapovic. Then in 2022 I bought a 2022 KTM 1290 SAS and rode it for 7.000 km. Then in September it got stolen. Last week I ordered the new 2023 Vstrom 1050 (regular,no more XT or DE). I loved the Suzuki engine before and the 2023 model finnaly has a TFT and quickshifter, so I would say now (just no on TFT navigation or adjustable suspension) it has more or less everything. Sure KTM was a monster, really quick and fun to ride, the suspension was not great (pretty bouncy on bad roads), but Suzuki has that Vtwin sound, and with Akra it is gona be perfect I think.

Biased here: Have the 2020 ATAS DCT SE - but I can easily understand and accept the outcome. Here in Germany the XT is 1000€ MORE than base manual AT comparing street prices, though. That again makes it much harder to justify the XT.

Nice apples-to-oranges comparison. A Versys1000 is an applicable comparison to the the Strom, just as the KTM Super ADV is to the AT.

I think Suzuki did exactly what you wished for. 2021 engine is upgraded because of emission standards and they did it to the direction of Africa Twin. It revs now more freely. It still is not in the same level, but a step that direction.

Like your review, how you get the things across and how and why you conclude as you do. Pretty entertaining to watch you guys, and that's for half an hour. Great job. - Suzuki is producing some great motorcycles nobody hardly takes any notice of as it seems or they are talked down. Nice to see the new V-Strom 1050 is getting a good amount of attention. For me it's the perfect adventure sports tourer on the market I haven't had on my list since recently other than Honda's AT. I don't care about competitors being more suitable for heavy duty offroad biking, because who actually does that? But yet it can accomplish offraod duties most people face. Anyway...totally reliable, awesome design, great engine, still reasonable price, no gimmicks just for the sake of it, fantastic chassis and handling, long distance travel possible, no need for a manual to operate its features. A hidden diamond, the real premium.

Excellent review. I have a 2021 AT like the one being reviewed 5 months of ownership and experiencing electrical problems and looking to buy a vstrom soon. I had a 2006 vstrom 1000 great bike. Your spot on with the motor in the Honda is so quick off the line and decent top in. Still clueless on the how to of all the electronic components and views on touch screen. Give me simple and reliable anyway.

Great comparison guys and very fair I thought. I have just bought a heavily discounted previous model of the V-Strom and I love it. Funny thing is I doubt the scoring would be much different if you had compared the outgoing 2019 version of the V-strom against the Africa twin. Apart from cruise and that Nintendo like screen it has all the same electronics and does not have that lame looking (parts bin) square headlight. It is another £2K cheaper if you buy at the right place and is more comfortable. I am more than happy with the slightly older bike. And it is not yellow ;-)

Great comparison! Really enjoyed it. I think it was very realistic & differentiated the bikes well from each other. The ease of use & value categories are vital & often missed by pro reviews but they really matter for your average rider. The AT is a great & better bike imo but the tech level & price turn me off so I'd go for the V-Strom which is real world decision making for me at least. Although the disappointing bit about the V-Strom is the engine which is fundamentally a gem but emissions have totally strangled it. It needs a can or possibly a full system & a remap to release the character which then gets very expensive. Suzuki should just up the power to TL levels to compensate imo.

Great review. I'm so used to see other reviews talking about how there is AT, GS1250 and poo poo everything else. Good to see a down to earth review, practical, talk about value, because in the end, that's what many customers are after. One thing I wish you talked about - not all of us are 6ft. tall, how tall do you have to be to handle it comfortably?

I've ridden a '97 TL1000S for decades, and considered a Vstrom for a new bike despite the fact that I really don't need adventure styling or weight. I love the TL V-twin, but I was really hoping they'd have increased the performance over the last 2 decades. Instead they just seem to have cut it's balls off (one testicle with the SV1000, and completely neutered with the Vstrom). That's despite the capacity hike, dual spark, improved cooling, much better EFI etc. Ended up getting a 1290 Super Duke 2.0 instead. The KTM engine is a bit rougher (lugs more, up to higher rpm and vibrates more/differently with the 75 degree intervals), but the increased performance more than makes up for it. I really like torquey, excessive engines. Hondas are definitely quality, but they've always had that bland, conservative, designed-by-committee feel to most of their bikes. Same reason I chose the TL1000S over the VTR1000 back in the day.
