Today we are reviewing an adventure diesel motorcycle that can travel 900 kilometers on one tank! It accelerates to the first 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 180 km/h. Enjoy watching!
That time I flew to the Netherlands and met Erik at the factory and I was able to go for a test drive with him. Of course it was not possible to push it to the limits and test the WP-suspension, but the bikes handling felt utterly intuitive. The gearshifting, more precisely the lack of it due to CVT, was also quite fine, center of gravity was felt pretty low. OverallI is a pity that they went out of business, because that proposition was quite well ahead of its time and compared to ancient low-HP diesel conversions (like Bulltets with Italian Industry engines) it was a full value ADV bike, and beyond...
that is one motorcycle I want to have if I have the money. this is a dependable bike . the noice is nothing or even the vibration. they should introduce that here in the philippines.
@@xani666 the cost of diesel and vastly lower consumption would change a lot. Longevity would be on another level as well with the bike revving much lower than the equivalent gasoline engine.
I think that diesel engine vibrations are unbearable on a motorcycle, because you are sitting directly on the frame and the engine is bolted directly to the frame. In cars ,diesel engines are bolted to the chassis with rubber suspension blocks and a car seat is not installed directly on the chassis.
@@conguero7264 motorcycle engines use counterbalancing shafts within the engine to minimize vibrations. Can't see why this can't be used for diesel motors as well. I might be wrong about that though.
There is definitely a market for diesel motorcycles, a V-twin cruiser would be cool, diesel has a nice exhaust note. Modern diesel technology has serious improved over the years, I would definitely look forward to a big cruiser😊
That was one bewutiful, reasonable bike, well executed. And that is the reason it never became big. Reasonable does not sell in cars, it does even less so in motorcycles.
Bit of a shame that this didn't take off. But imagine if you had one - it would be kind of a trade-off: on the one hand you only have to visit a pump much less often than with a regular bike, but on the other hand you'd always have to explain to the clerk that yes, you're here with the motorbike, and yes, you're buying diesel. I guess the novelty of that wears off rather quickly. :p That said, I met a diesel bike (and its rider) once on the road, it was a Sommer. It looked cool and sounded hilarious. Sommer used to produce diesel bikes in small quantities, but had to stop production when Euro5 came around. It's still possible to get an old Enfield and have it retrofitted with a diesel engine, though.
1: You do need to pull the brake to start. 2: Recognition for the parts of my video's would be nice. 3: That noise from the shaft was from the shaft because the custom shaft i had made sits a little further in the housing. Taking out some material solved that issue. It has nothing to do with the belt.
Owned a Smart Cdi 450 for several years, would also have been my engine choice for the bike. It's definitely not a mainstream bike and for the price you get a new 690 and convert it into a world traveller.
Man i'd be interested if styled better. Ride from my house to Denmark with 1 tank. Even love the sound. Not as nice as my harley but has its own kind of character to it. Hope to hear more from it
Reason number one to go diesel.... If you cross the Sahara it is easier to find diesel than to find gasoline. The torque (the elasticity of the engine actually) is also a beneficial on sand .
@@gbone7581 the weight of dr800 engine is 60 kg... But okay, let's take the 39 kg of the KTM 690 engine. The 690.emduro with luggage, fuel , protection and fully kitted rider is 300 kg. The 40 kg represent only 13% of the total package. But you've got a point about weight, but it pays off only when you really go light. Kind of Paul rtw 500 enduro KTM at 120 kg and using lightweight gear .
Really sad. Was very keen to buy, but, the price was unaffordable for me at the time. Now I would have no financial difficulty in purchasing, but, at 75 years of age, something, smaller, and lighter, like a Moto Guzzi Breva 750 is more in order. All too late now!!!

I like the idea of a super fuel efficient motor bike with decent performance. My concern is the engine vibration. Did they have some way of dampening the engine vibration? Most motorbikes are quite noisy so i dont think the engine noise would be an issue although diesels dont have the most pleasant sounds
Very interesting bike! Sad that they didn't find enough buyers to keep building them. A very common problem with small scale companies, the price has to be very high and that limits buyers. Maybe one of the big factories will see the possibilities.
Damm 900km on single tank a car with 60 litre tank can do 1000km if driven conservatively and you can carry some fuel cans and fill it up to full again this bike is amazing
Interesting concept, but I'm not so sure about the CVT. While, it does have benefits over traditional setups, especially when mated to a diesel, it takes away some levels of control, not to mention the large amount of engine braking this engine would offer (imagine it with an exhaust/jake brake!). Personally, I would prefer a dual range, six speed, clucthed arrangement, but that's just me!😄
Yep a dual range would be great on ADV bikes, we used to have a farmbike with it, or at least a creeper gear. Also I have 2 CVT quads which are awesome on the farm, better traction, smoother, and simple, but I think I'd still want a manual box on an ADV bike, it's just more fun.
Thank you for this researched story. Narration is “ odd” fast and slow with pitch issues at time . Starts with an Australian accent, @2:23 still definitely Aussie “ CVT” @6:00 we hear an Aussie. “Rubberise the Footrests” & “the engine is about to stall” @6:10 “ clearly” we have a German accent. @6:15 we have the Aussie back again. Why are these changes that distract from the excellent video content ? ? @6:25 “ninety kilometres per ‘H’ ….“ This is just after saying “kilometres per hour” . ? then saying kilometres per “H” is THIS a sign that a bot is narrating written script ? Tell me I’m wrong ? @6:28 “ attractiveness “ pommie English or Aussie.. ( doesn’t matter ) @6:38 definitely Aussie in how he says Aprilia @7:20 still definitely Aussie @7:23 we have an American Narrator ! @7:35 we have a German accent AGAIN. @7:39 “ motorcycles “ Deutsche !!?” AI BOT anomalies ??? What a great video with so many cameo narrators! That makes it quite unique.
I think diesel cars were a big mistake and I had non turbo diesels when I started with 59hp. Then TDDi then common rail. Then came a DPF Then came ADD Blue. Each one just made things worse in my view. Some people even fitted the non turbo banana transit engine in the Mk6 and mk7 transit as it was more reliable and easier to fix and maintain.
@@chrishart8548 diesel cars (and trucks) are absolutely great. Then the emission crap kicked in and they started adding all the modern BS you mention. I currently own a PD TDI which I use only for longer trips and the equivalent SUV in gas-powered variant would cost me an arm and a leg in fuel costs. Diesel is not only cheaper but more economical as well (in terms of actual consumption).
@C_R_O_M________ I've still got a diesel mondeo with the PSA engine. It has a dpf but I make sure I do long journeys and so far it has been very good. Its also an automatic. It would probably be really easy to stall if it was a manual. In the past it was impossible to stall a diesel. Now its impossible not to.
Diesel is an OIL....petrol is a combustible liquid. Petrol is highly combustible and burns and corrodes engines in the long run. Diesel lubricates as it's an OIL and burns slowly. It LUBRICATES internal engine components and keeps the engine in good health. DIESEL burns much more slowly and finely and thats why it has more mileage. And anything that burns SLOWLY pollutes much LESS. Then why it's known to be polluted? Because.... Diesel can be made from used VEGETABLE OIL or any certain biodegradable materials. Because govt and suppliers cannot control this so they are hell bent on banning diesel. And forget about electric vehicles. Producing a battery creates more pollution than diesel engines polluting in their entire lifetime.
Not sure about Euros and feel free to check the math but, based on an average inflation rate of 2.56% per year between 2009 and 2024, $17500usd is equivalent to about $25500usd. That’s a hunk of change to save a few pennies for fuel. Add to that devaluation and cost of a kidney transplant and, yikes!
@painmagnet1 ay, somebody with humour. Was expecting a butthurt harley comment, but this is fine as well Not like i have been riding only Honda exclusively up till now😅 But I'm really eyeing a 2009 R6 in icon blue with golden wheels as a fun bike
@@someguy9520 Never had an R6 but plenty of friends with them. Best middleweight supersport you can buy IMO. Best all-rounder middleweight is my Street Triple.
It didn't find enough customers because nobody knew about it. I never heard of this motorcycle until today watching this video, In my view, it failed because of a lack of publicity.
This would've been really nice before electric motorcycles started getting as good as they are now. Nowadays I can just charge at home so never have to visit a gas station anyways.
@@darkiee69 If you mostly use it for commuting it's not really something you have to worry about, since you leave home with a full charge every single day. :) If you're on a long roadtrip you have to charge it at a charging station along the highway, which takes like 40 minutes, though the fastest models take half that time. Since most people only go on such trips once a year there's quite a lot of people where that wouldn't really be an issue, as you do it so rarely. Recommend trying one some day, they're really nice to ride! 😁
Think it is a good idea just not practical. Diesel engine last longer if it runs all day, would be rubbish on loose sand and you need revs like a 2 stroke .
They don't mind 'em producing diesel-powered motorcycles, but they banned two-stroke motorcycles on pollution grounds, four decades ago. As if two-stroke gasoline motorcycles caused more pollution than diesel-powered vehicles! Double standards!
