Real good concept. Ive had one for years, paid for itself many times over compared to motels when travelling. Pack it up wet in the morning if so, then open up at a roadside stop to air and dry while having your smoko or lunch. Made a tub rack to suit the ute....low profile and easier access. Permanent fixture.....All good..
Iv just bought one with the kings tub rack, I actually didn’t check for video personal reviews on the tent but since seeing this I can’t wait to bold it to my Ute and get out camping ! Mint video mate thank you 👍👍👍
How have you found the quality after a year? Would you still recommend the tent and annex? I've been looking at the roof top with the 6 person annex also. Would love to hear your thoughts 🙂
I've done future videos since this review and actually had issues with this rooftop tent. I upgraded to the 23zero which is far better quality and don't regret it. Worth the extra money. I've also reviewed that on my channel aswell 👍
Great review. Helped me decide to buy one. Used it for the first time and easily fits my wife and I and our 22 month old daughter that sleeps upside down and sideways. Needs a better mattress as I woke up and noticed my lower back and backside killing me as felt like I had sunk and was on the hard base. I only weigh 85kgs.
Great review. First I've seen where the bungie chord process was mentioned. Very useful. 👌👌Yeah, I thought the "tent pegs supplied would be good tooth picks ,at best. Choice of music? well Hmm
Yeah mate there bloody good I've got one on top of my camper trailer and a quicky roof top tent on top of my ute both excellent products .good video mate
That's why I run a wind off canopy.. no pack up.. just jack it up, lock the doors and go.. had two mates on Fraser with rtt's and they had to pack up every day.. ARB tents to so no leaving ya blankets in there
great review, thanks. i have been weighing up the pros and cons and your video has been the most insightful yet. a new subsciber here, keep up the good work
Cheers 👍haha yeah it definitely does. But I'm pretty heavy & it's never shown any signs of giving way. Ours gets used every weekend and it's holding up fine 👍
Cheers mate good review. Just picked one of these up near new with the annex for $500. I noticed your guy ropes look like they’re tied off on the inside of the entry way. Is that how it’s meant to be? coz I’ve tied mine on the outside tia
@11:00 answers my questions. I have a screwed back so use more layers currently in our forward fold (at least a self expanding under the main mattress). If I had this I'd be adding the kings self inflating under it and since I sleep hot likely under sheet, top sheet and dooner but it sounds like you're saying that'd be too thick to pull it down.
It would be close. You may be able to compress the self inflating mattress down enough. This is why I changed to a hardshell rooftop tent. Now I have a 100mm mattress plus all my bedding & pillows in it all the time
Cheers for making this video it has cleared up a lot of questions and thoughts I've had on it, great to know that it handles fine in strong winds as that was my biggest concern if you could. I would be looking to use mine every day for when I start travelling, it would be a maximum of 1 month I'd say be my longest before doing a full on trip for months, in that time I'll be able to test everything out leading up to it. What's your thoughts on using the annex if you don't have a tall 4wd is it worth while getting it or just stick with the tent and get an awning?
Glad to hear I could help 👍the annex is great but a bit annoying if you have to pack it up every day for travel & it takes up valuable space where as an awning takes up no space and is always easy to pack up. Just be aware awnings can't handle strong winds where as the annex is fine in strong winds as long as it's strapped down well. It just flaps around a lot lol. Not really the best for shorter 4wds but if you've got time before your trip I'd get it cut & trimmed to suit the height of your car & then you won't have any issues 👍
@@Campingdownunder Cheers for the fast response! sounds like I won't get it with the annex as you're right it would take longer to setup and pack up each day plus takes up more room in the car. I'll look into awnings but just wouldn't use it in windy conditions as you have suggest not a ideal thing to do haha Cheers for the sound advice!
Great review ,i was wondering how it was mounted , Im thinking of putting on on the top of my boat ,smaller but strong boat have side hand rails not willing to drill holes though
Thanks mate 👍 it wouldn't work on a boat without building a frame for it to mount to. It would also make the boat very top heavy making it hard to control. It attaches with 8 bolts that slide along a rail. They give you a piece of metal with 2 holes in it which you use to clamp onto your mount. I have seen people mount them on the boat trailer before though
Quick disconnected/ bolting down with a roof rack with or without cross bars. Could you construct a nonlive load (dead load only) support frame to leave the tent setup if you want to drive your vehicle somewhere without having to pack up the camp site?
Hey mate killer review do you know how much weight the overhang is good for I realise it’s meant for 2 people just seems like a solid chunk of weight for just the ladder to be supporting
Hi, great vid, looked like you worked for them the praise was that high lol. Did you season this tent canvas prior to use a few times over a few days? Maybe a vid on seasoning a canvas tent would be great? Cheers
I did a future video explaining what went wrong with the rooftop tent and why I upgraded. Also reviewed my new rooftop tent. I've done a video on seasoning a swag it's exactly the same. Just wet it with a hose multiple times
Yep they are great 👍 yep we fold them in half before packing up the rooftop tent to stop it bunching up in the middle while folding it over. Can't fit our pillows though
I would like to know how you mounted the tent as I have just brought the same tent and want to mount it to the roof of my Variety Bash car which is similar to your roof.
I filmed another video showing how I installed my 23zero rooftop tent. It mounted exactly the same as the king's rooftop tent. Check out my other video 👍
Cheers I will start hunting for some. I used my tent for the first time on the weekend. Loved it apart from the ladder steps. Keep up the good work with the vids.
Sorry I haven't had this rooftop tent in years now. I've upgraded several times since this video. They quite often have them on display in stores if you wanted to check one out in person
Now that you have had it for a few years what’s your opinion now (still the same) ? How do you find the floor when it’s setup is it thick enough or is it to thin
I haven't had this rooftop tent in years sorry. I posted an update video with the issues we had with this rooftop tent aswell as multiple other rooftop tent reviews
Thank you 👍 I pay for all my music from the epidemic sound website. You aren't allowed to put licenced music in video's without permission from the creator. So people have to pay website's for royalty free music
With all this gear you have that goes out with you on location do you have it insured? I've been trying to look for companies that cover camping gear with no luck, home and contents say they cover it but its only while its at your home and not when you're out. My main concern is thieves and if I have a accident I loose a few thousand dollars worth of gear. I am in Australia as well :)
Unfortunately I don't. I keep everything locked up in my canopy at all times so I never have to worry about people stealing anything. I haven't found an insurer either sorry
@@Campingdownunder Cheers mate for getting back to me, it seems the way with a lot of people not to have cover as its so hard to actually find one. I have thought of a way that will allow much more security when it comes to mounting my roof tent I have coming in the post. this is my main concern getting back to my car and finding my tent has gone and I am left with no where to sleep.
@@Campingdownunder Good to hear! I am thinking about putting that red lock tight on the bolts when attached to my roof rack. My roof rack requires a special key that you can't buy or be copied it comes with the rack. need to make it as tough as possible against thieves, I wish we didn't have them.
Where’d you get the straps for the inside of the tent? Mine never came with anything like that, great idea. Saves pushing all the side bits in each time you fold it up.
Wow I have never actually seen one getting around here lol. Features look great but I'd never buy another rooftop tent without lst. It's a game changer 👍
Hey, great video, sorry for not seeing this earlier, it’s just now we are interested in camping so tossing up whether to get a tent or something like this roof top, I have a hilux workmate single cab with a alloy tray, do you know if it’s possible to attach it in the tray as I can’t find any info anywhere, cheers 🍻
I just installed mine today on that same model ute. I installed 2 rear ladder bars in the tray first, cut down to the same height as the stock traybar and bolted this straight on between the front bar and the new mid bar Using 100mm M8 bolts That way I can still use the ute tray to store stuff underneath I'll put a rear rack and solar panel on later But it looks good so far! Height at the highest point ends up at 2.3 merers (ish) So if you need to get the ute into city carparks You may need to cut the back ladder racks down to get the right clearance I couldn't figure out the ladder & other stuff because I ran out of daylight So there's heaps of stuff I haven't even though to check out yet Other than a broken Zipper closer I'm going to give it a field test tomorrow to see how the ute handles the extra weight up there
Again sorry it wasn't showing me which videos you were commenting on. I thought it was the rooftop tent video 🤣 nah hot weather you get no condensation at all but be careful in winter especially in fog. You get fantastic footage but in just a few minutes the drone is covered in condensation from the blades
Hi. When there is strong wind. Would it blow away the roof top tent? I never use roof top tent so I don't know if it good or the tent on the ground is better? Thanks for your help
Thanks for the question 👍 the rooftop tent is bolted to your car & has a solid base so it can't go anywhere unlike a tent. We have slept in it in over 100km winds and it help up just fine. We just close the windows in strong winds
Check with your roof rack supplier but that weight capacity should be while driving. It should be a higher rating while parked. But also check with your car dealership to make sure your roof can handle that much weight 👍
They have been fantastic on the doors. I've got stronger struts on the door than it actually needs so it handles the extra weight of the panel as well as the insulation and marine carpet & lights. They work great when camping as you leave both doors up so they are always getting full charge
@@Campingdownunder cheers for the reply man. Still get some sort of charge while driving around then? Or do you just rely on charge from your main battery? Thinking of setting mine up the same just to give me the extra room on the roof
Yeah it definitely does make a lot of noise. I think moisture might have gotten into it. It has worried me but we've been using it each weekend for 2 years now & it's still going 👍
I used to tuck them in between the poles and canvas at the entrance on the outside. But now with my camp king industries rooftop tent it come with a canvas shoe bag
@abulka I had a 23zero rooftop tent in between so I've tested all 3 budgets. I've also reviewed both other rooftop tent's. The 23zero I'd recommend to most people who don't want to spend big $. They also have a shoe bag from memory
Under 5 minutes 👍then you just need to setup your bedding. Personally I'd check out the 23zero rooftop tent first though. It's only $1400 & has so many more features than this tent. Much better quality aswell
I just used mine for the first time yesterday and I was delighted with the convenience of setting it up. Then I went for a sleep last night.... the inside was covered in bugs. Countless caterpillars on the inside. They had been getti g into the tent via the opening where the hinges are in the two sides. Have you done something to block these holes up? I was thinking about putting some Velcro on these areas after the tent is set up
Great during the week. It keeps my fridge running 24/7 but once the rooftop tent is up it blocks the panels so I've got a fold out 300w panel once I get to camp
I weigh over 90kgs and it holds me & my partner fine. Just as a precaution we only ever have 1 of us at a time putting our full weight over the half that sticks out and supported by the ladder. Never had an issue in nearly 3 years
You should probably send rhino a message or which ever roof racks you decide to go with and ask them if their roof racks can handle a constant load of at least 70kgs aswell as 2 people once parked. I'd also double check with your local Toyota dealer to find out exactly how much weight your roof can safely carry 👍
Haha I've had the exact same thing happen to us aswell & I've never been able to work out why. I think it's because the black straps inside the rooftop tent that run right across it are too tight stopping it from fully opening. Both my straps have broken now & now it suddenly opens all the way & the rooftop tent still works fine lol. But also check that the rails where your canvas bag feeds into are interlocking correctly when you open it
I had the same issue. I just popped a ratchet strap from the 2 fixings on the bottom to my car and tightened them a little. I think it’s a common problem Scott.
I've been using it for around 2 years and it gets used every weekend. For the price you won't beat it. We've had straps break which makes it harder to close but you have to expect that when it gets used as much as we use it. I'd definitely recommend buying one 👍
@@bradbaston7186 yeah the levelling issue is something common with them. The strap that runs right through the inside is too tight not allowing it to fold flat. But hasn't really been an issue with us it doesn't effect its use
Would it b ok to mount to standard crossbar roof racks? Ok the tent is 57kg racks are normally 75-80kg rated that’s fine right but put 2 adults and a child on top would be a risk of damaging the racks as the total mass could be 250-300kgs?
The racks themselves can definitely handle the weight of having 2 adults in the rooftop tent. But if you are mounting it above the cabin of your car you need to check with your vehicle dealer to find out the maximum weight capacity of your roof. That's where most people have trouble
@@Campingdownunder The way we look at it, at the price, we can afford to replace it every year or so and still be ahead financially (with the added benefit of having a new roof top tent)
Klugers have factory roof racks so as long as you have the cross bars going across between the roof racks it will mount on. But I'd confirm first with your local Toyota dealer how much weight your car can handle on the roof. Both static weight (stationary) when you are parked & climb up into the rooftop tent and also how much weight while you are driving along. Remember on & off road have different weight ratings. As long as your roof can have the 60kgs of rooftop tent & 1 or 2 people inside it it will be fine. But always better to make sure it's safe first 👍
We use the adventure kings -5 degree sleeping bags & join them both together. They stay in there all the time. We just fold them in half before folding up the rooftop tent. You can't fit any more than that though. They really don't like having much bedding in there especially pillows
