We had no idea that this was even something we could do until one morning we woke up early, stumbled out of our AirBnB and saw a small group of people slipping into yellow kayaks from a doorway across the canal from us! We went and knocked on the door and made a reservation for the very next morning... it was definitely one of our TOP adventures, a memory we will forever cherish :)
Special thanks to our guide, the gondolier I crashed into and www.BVKayak.com !!

I love Italy - how did I miss this video! I've only been to Venice once, spent most of the day walking around there, but it was beautiful. I'll have to try this next time.

So glad you like! We only knew about it because our AirBnB just happened to be across the canal from it!

I wonder if it is really common to see paddlers in the canal? The tourists were definitely interested in you guys it seems. Very fun!

It really isn't common and they don't advertise for it at all, in fact, we were the only ones we saw that day! We only knew about it because our AirBnB just happened to be across the canal from it. I think they keep it hush hush because of safety, their waterways are like serious highways! Plus the gondoliers business might suffer if there were kayakers crashing into them around every corner... LOL.

@@Mrandmrsadventure Actually kayaks and other paddle craft have been banned since 2019 from the main canale of Venice for this very reason. While it is a beautiful and unique way of seeing the city, the numerous accidents and near-misses with motorised transport led to the total ban of these and similar craft. They can still be used to see the secondary canals and lagoon, but until things change, if they do, at the moment a quiet paddle in the grand canal can lead to a hefty fine... Unfortunately local clubs have also been penalised and can no longer take school children into Venice for educational reasons (pre-covid).

I guess we were there prior to this. That's a shame. Kayakers do not threaten the ecosystem or cause any damage. It was the best way to see the city.

Can you please share the link to the kayak guide service? Do you recall if they had kayaks available with 2 seats (for a child in front?)

Unfortunately not sure what the company was now as this was back in 2016. Google "Kayaking Venice Canals" hope you can find someone that can get you out on the waterway.

Zero respect for the city, its history and ambiance.

Thats unfortunate that you think this. Kayaks are eco friendly, leave no trace and don't make any noice. We feel that it's one of the best ways to see the city when experiencing it with a professional guide.
