I'm a Detention Officer/Deputy that is deputized. I've been working at the County Jail for 8 months now and I felt like making a video to give some advice and tips to New and upcoming Detention/Jail Officers.

*Regarding The German Flag* It was brought to my attention not long ago that some mistake the flag in the background as a "Nazi Flag" however it's not. It's a German Flag from the early 1900s. I mainly have it there because I like the design. That's the honest truth. It's for non-political reasons. If you have read the articles about me online you might also see a 3rd Reich Flag, and I do own one but I don't even have it hanging on my wall. Not only because it's poor taste but I personally don't agree with Nazi politics or care for the design. If you notice the flag to the left is a Holy Roman Empire flag. Arguably the precursors to Prussia and The German Empire. So I have a collection of German flags. *Regarding the online posts and articles* If you do read the online articles you'll see the comments and posts I made a couple of years ago. I think most of the posts and comments I made were in bad taste and poorly thought out and overall stupid. Before you say anything remember one thing. People change and learn from their mistakes. Unfortunately, many don't see it that way. Thanks again for watching :) Have a blessed day.

Ever consider getting a flag from a democratic country?
@howie3601
@howie3601 4 года назад
@@bobdylan7968 I'm confused. The German Empire was "Democratic" and I have an American flag. Look to your left in this video. Georgia State flag to your right at the very back. In fact, all my flags are from "Democratic countries" except for the Holy Roman Empire. I'm not sure what you mean.
@bobdylan7968
@bobdylan7968 4 года назад
Howie3601 The German Empire was definitely not democratic. Although it technically had an elected legislature, in reality the power was held by the emperor and the chancellor he appointed. And I don’t see an American flag.
@howie3601
@howie3601 4 года назад
@@bobdylan7968 Must not be in the frame it's a blue line American flag. I know that the German government from the 1800s to the 1920s wasn't exactly "Democratic" (Prussia included) but it did have elected officials but obviously still had a monarchy. Most European nations did at that time. (Sorta of topic) You probably already know this but if not you'd be surprised how much power that the Queen of England (for example) still has. But yeah most of my flags aren't, for a political statement. The Iron cross has always been appealing to me and I have a small collection of flags sitting in a container. Most of them are nylon, unfortunately :(

@@howie3601 Howie, Didn't you get fired a few months after you posted this video? And lo and behold, the site that reported that fact quoted some of your other online comments too! For example, “I’ll say this I am extremely right winged and I view racism as normal,” Costner wrote. “Just read the definition of racism and it’s not a bad thing. That’s my own belief though. I went from being a libertarian Conservative to more Authoritarian," Hmm. How did you explain that during your subsequent job interviews? And by the way, that blue line bullshit is not an American flag you little pos.

I’m a CO at a medium security facility that’s been on lock down for two weeks now, here to share a story. This past Tuesday I was working the night shift, yeah boring right? Wrong, this was probably one of the funniest days I have ever had working at this facility. So let’s begin, I was assigned to Charlie unit (consists of two pods north and south) and morning shift just passed out dinner trays to their cells. We have to do this since there was a gang fight in the mess hall and one inmate got stabbed in the jugular vein. Anyway back to the story, after 15-20 minutes we go cell to cell with a trustee to pick up the empty trays. We get to this particular cell that has an inmate with a reputation of being a prankster. We open the cell door and trustee grabs the trays from the doorway. Trustee jumps out of his own skin and screams like a school girl, me being the CO I am I’m curious to know wtf was going on. (Trustee jumps and does a scared dance run around the day room) I look down into the tray and see a DEAD MOUSE in this dudes dinner roll. No it didn’t come from the kitchen with a dead mouse in it, the inmate from this cell put it in the roll. He even took the extra step to thread the top of the roll with the mouses tail, kinda like a birthday candle but in a sadistic way. Not gonna lie, that was the first time I laughed HARD in front of my inmates.
@alexanderesco
@alexanderesco 4 года назад
Is it ok to joke around with the inmates?
@johnb1931
@johnb1931 4 года назад
Alex E it is, but only on certain subjects. You don’t want to over step your boundaries, cause you might get yourself and your fellow officers in some shit. Some inmates don’t give a shit about anything and will joke around with you all day, others are best to be left alone or treated seriously. Like the other day I called a UAB a crackhead cause he was tweaking out, he laughed it off and so did his celly. But if you call an inmate a bitch, you better be ready for the consequences. Cause the word “bitch,” is the worst thing you can call an inmate. Cause the way he sees it, he sees it as you’re calling him weak. And if he allows one person to call him that, everyone will eventually start calling him that. Moral of the story is, know the person you’re talking to. Know how they react to certain things before you shoot the shit with them. Side note: If you do go into corrections, act accordingly to your security level. If you’re in a level 4 like me, you can bullshit with some and be serious with others. But if you’re at a maximum, you have to be serious 100% of the time. But again, be human, don’t be a robot.

@@MrMarkusfyi Mostly because of personal reasons. I didn't really like working with inmates and I don't think being a street cop would be much better. Oh and I was also let go from my department because antifa wrote an article of me and a co worker online. The article had elements of conjecture. Saying I expressed "far right views" well at least that's what one news outlet said. Basically they were claiming I was sympathetic to Neo Nazi and some news outlets were saying I expressed pro Nazi views, but honestly I'm not a Neo Nazi and never have been. Honest to god truth, but let it be a lesson that you've got to be careful what you post online. Especially if you work in the public eye. A lot of Journalists will pick apart what you say and make it sound like something you didn't. Either way I was planning on quitting before all of this mess happened. My co worker has managed to keep a career in Law Enforcement. Which tells me I'd be able to as well but I I have no desire to. Thanks for the question and thank you for watching.

It's funny the way you mention not to put your hands on the detainees. They advise teachers not to put their hands on the kids, it always leads to trouble. But when you're in a position of authority, you often have the instinct to do it. If you can restrain yourself and keep your cool when things get rough, you will win.
@howie3601

There is a time to go hands on, however many times I've seen officers do it when it wasn't needed. If two inmates are fighting do not try to go "hands on" unless you have more officers in your unit. If an inmate is refusing to go back into their cell, don't go hands on immediately.

You're correct. I met some officers that acted like they were better than the inmates, and treated them like a subhuman. I don't want new officers getting that impression from their coworkers, and that's why I said you should treat the inmates like a human being and with respect. Honestly most of the problems I had with inmates was solved by talking to them. This job isn't right for people with huge egos.

I’ve worked both state and county facilities and let me say state is a lot tougher. Reason being inmates have nothing to lose they’ve already been sentenced to their time. In county facilities the inmates are usually still waiting for trial or sentencing. Don’t get me wrong it’s still dangerous we’ve had two Jail deputy’s killed in the last 3 years. I work at a big city jail so we get usually all the murderers and gang members coming through our facility. State prison was much more laid back especially when I work at the work camps. Those dudes were just trying to go home.

Don’t go hands on? Lol To many deputies are scared to go hands on, that’s how injuries occur. People wait to long to intervene and go hands on. I probably get in a use of force every other week at my department.
@howie3601
@howie3601 5 лет назад
Yes and no. If you get into the middle of two inmates fighting and you don't have assistance that's poor decision making. Best thing to do is wait the 20 or 30 seconds for assistance (call for assistance on the radio) and then once your assistance gets there break up the fight. This isnt just my advice either but supervisors have told me this too. It's not a matter of being scared. It's a matter of making sure you don't get hurt. I've met some deputies that just wanted to get into fights. Which that's their priority but they act like you've got to have their same mentality. As long as you're effectively doing your job everyone has their own way of doing it. Like I said there is no definitive way of doing this job. A lot of this job is learning how to talk to people. I liked this job a lot because I got to interact with the inmates that needed help. I genuinely cared about the well being of them and did my best to make sure I did things the right way. Obviously half the inmates didn't see it that way but the ones that came up to thank me made the job worth it in some ways. Which is why I mentioned in the video that you can change their life.

I worked in the jail for a while. I got stabbed in the eye with a pencil and still have lead/graphite in my eye. The one rule that was thrown at us the most was don't f@*# inmates😅. If you do something for one inmate it's expected that you'll do it for all of them. Writing in the log book needs to be legible because it is a document to be used in a court of law. A judge will not use it if they cannot read it. Try to use something called verbal judo meaning if John doe is mad because Billy Bob took his tray then try to handle it but now John doe has a shank planning on cutting Billy Bob who's in charge of the worst gang in there. Big deal right? Be present. Be focused. Talk about something they saw on TV or they're family (never talk about your family or address with inmates, keep all sensitive information to yourself). Try to calm things down as best as you can. There's strength in numbers and your brothers and sisters will have your back.

They might send you but generally all departments are always needing to hire new people. Don't ask me why but I guess most departments can't keep people. I was in the hiring process for a police department when I was working as a Detention officer. So you could do that too after a few months of working there. But please do an honest assessment of yourself before you decide to go down that route. Being a street cop and a detention officer are two very different things.

Some departments require it and others don't. When I applied from the Sheriff's office for the detention position we didn't take one, but when I applied to work for a Police Department we had to take one. All depends on the department. Good luck for your future endeavors and stay safe when working there.

If they're trying to hurt you, then yes, defend yourself. However make sure you have backup. Whatever 10 code it is to call for help or immediate assistance, call it in. Do what you need to, just don't get in the middle of inmates fighting without another officer being there to help you break it up. Often you'll be in units alone. Just remember this and you'll be fine 🙂

Anyone else notice the German (nazi) imperial flag in the background....
@howie3601
@howie3601 4 года назад
I can see why you would mistake it for a Nazi flag, but it's not. It's a German Imperial Flag from the early 1900s. This was the German flag prior the the Nazi party taking over. Unfortunately, a lot of Neo-Nazis use it because they are ignorant. I personally love the design. Black and Red are my two favorite colors, and I love Iron crosses. I have German ancestors too. I have it on my wall for non-political reasons. :) My old department wanted me to remove this video and I did until about a year ago.

It's still up. I like it too much to take it down. I also have a 3rd Reich Flag that I found at an Army Navy store, but I don't display it very often for obvious reasons. Yeah, I'm sickened by the systematic murder of Jews. Nobody deserves to be taken from their family and put in a work camp or worse a death camp. It's horrible and I can't support an ideology such as that. However I will recognize that it happened. Also, I keep the white German Flag up because it had nothing to do with the NatSoc party.

@howie3601
@howie3601 4 года назад
Thank you,, It's pretty good. I don't remember it too often now. Employers haven't cared, and no one ever mentions it to me. Honestly, after the first week it died. However it wasn't nice reading all the hateful, cruel comments and messages. People who don't even know me personally, trying to pass judgment for something they haven't even asked my opinion on. I did some stupid and poorly thought out things but I'm not a hateful person. Which is what irritated me the most. Not once did I ever have an inmate come to me and claim I was prejudice or was showing favoritism. Because I didn't treat or think of any inmate less than another. At the end of the day, we're all human beings. Many of those inmates made a bad choice in life, it doesn't mean they're bad people. It would be against my morals to abuse my power to hurt someone, and that goes for anyone. White, Black, Asian etc. I also miss some of the inmates I had to work with. One had me looking up Bible verses every morning before shift change. He was a black inmate, which is what I find ironic. He and I would talk almost on a daily basis, depending on my assigned unit. He's a good man, and I wish I knew how he was doing. Same goes for a few others I saw everytime I went to work at the jail.

*Honk* Hey, man. I can read the comments lol. Honestly, my advice isn't the objective truth. However, my old SGT and CPT seemed to agree with the video. Which is why I kept it up. I don't work in Law Enforcement anymore, which is why I'm not making anymore videos. This was a one and done, and thats because I didn't see any other videos on RU-vid for Detention Officers. The main mistake I saw people make was trying to act like a Drill Sergeant with the inmates, and also not being commanding enough. You have to find something in between. The inmates are human beings, with families. On that same note, they're also in there for a reason (most of the time) Be alert, listen to the seasoned officers, and follow your departments protocols. You'll do fine if you remember that. Everyone always finds there way of doing the job.
