Do you want to become an environmental engineer, or get a PhD? Curious about what courses should you take to give you a competitive edge when applying for jobs and graduate school? What goes into applying and getting into grad school? What does the daily life of a Graduate Engineering student look like?
UCLA PhD candidate Alex Polasko sits down with Working in Science to talk all things environmental engineering and give some advice to aspiring environmental engineers.
Alex loves the interdisciplinary nature of the environmental engineering field. Her research focuses on ground water and using bacteria to clean the water and tap into our existing resources in a sustainable and green way. Alex uses bacteria in her research and works in a wet lab.
She does interdisciplinary research and collaboration with other researchers in the earth sciences fields. Participating in internship programs and working in a lab and as an intern helped to inform her decision to go to graduate school.
Looking to find someone to talk to in environmental engineering or get some questions answered? Leave a comment on this video!
You can also reach out to Alex Polasko directly at apolasko@g.ucla.edu or on Facebook at / polasko

One important thing she missed is to do research on the professor under which you are joining the grad school. Like asking about their supervision and behavior in the lab and their graduate student by asking the students who are currently pursuing their degree under them or have graduated from their lab. That another most important thing you should do before thinking of selecting them.

Environmental science is the academic field that takes physical, biological and chemical sciences to study the environment and discover solutions to environmental problems. Sciences used in environmental science include geography, zoology, physics, ecology, oceanology, and geology. Environmental science also branches out into environmental studies and environmental engineering. It provides an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental problems.

It will definitely connect! Engineers are all about finding practical, actionable solutions to problems. As a manager or quality control person you will be implementing those solutions! Any experience you have (education or work) will definitely be relevant if you decide to pursue a PhD.

Definitely not. Most jobs don't even require a master's degree now. Also, PhD degrees are not intended to prepare for jobs, they are intended to prepare for research. Until something like artificial intelligence replaces the need for humans doing jobs focused on implementation, most jobs will not be research.

Now as I’m in US really looking forward to get some guidance regarding my career (what next step should I take to build up my career, courses I should take, skills I should gain. So I definitely want to work in environmental studies, but I can't decide whether or not to focus more on science or engineering. I'm leaning toward engineering, but either way, I didn't do very well in math in high school which leaves me at a disadvantage. However I plan on minoring in math during my undergraduate. Aside from the math, my biggest concern as far as going into engineering is employment. I don't have a major concern with that if I go into the science because I know I will be doing research at a university or government agency, but where do engineers end up working? I know there are consulting firms, but who is gonna pay me and fund me to design a better waste management system that reduces the size of landfills or create a more sustainable agriculture system, etc. Where do I work to where I can address the problems I am most concerned with?
@WorkingInScience
@WorkingInScience 7 лет назад
Great questions! Engineers can get jobs in a variety of places implementing what they learned in school. Engineers are very desirable because they focus on the translational science - the nitty-gritty know how of bringing scientific principles into the real world. Environmental engineers can get jobs with non-profits, (i.e. Nature Conservancy or Environmental Defense Fund) at various levels of government (EPA, state governments, the military) or in different big companies to help make manufacturing, supply chain, and operations more environmentally friendly and sustainable (For jobs here think auto industry, mining industry, waste management industry, cosmetics industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc.). There are lots of startup companies that need talents of working environmental engineers too, like in algae biofuels. As an engineer, you could also come up with a solution to those big questions on your own (hello, possible PhD research topic!) and take your solution to market as a company or non-profit! Being educated as an engineer can open a lot of doors for you because it shows a level of training and practical expertise that employers love.

I used to struggle with choosing between environmental science or environmental engineering, but chose environmental engineering. I'll use an example to help clarify for you or anyone else that sees this comment. The problem is untreated sewage being pumped into the sea. An environmental scientist will conduct research and compile data on how the environment is affected, and come up with a solution to remediate and/or cut the harmful pollution to the affected ecosytem. An environmental engineer will use the findings of the scientist and construct the necessary infrastructure (i.e. a sewage treatment plant) in order to correct the problem/implement the solution. I chose environmental engineering because I want to design and/or oversee the solution. I too am not the best at math, but I with application and dedication, achieving is possible. Do not let the fear of a subject deter you from pursuing your goal. I'm curious to know though, what did you choose and why?
