I have this bare area in my garden and for years I have had no idea what to do with it. There is limited sunlight, no flower beds or access to the ground, just tarmac and patio paving. PLEASE give me any ideas or advice you might have to help me make this part of my garden into my English cottage garden dream! The more budget friendly the better! Thank you in advance! Take care, Melissa

I agree with others that suggest taking down both the white trellis and the hanging baskets and hangers. I would paint the door frame and window frames again with a different color. Sorry, that color doesn't brighten up your porch. I dont know what color, I would have to research that a bit! Maybe an off white or cream white to pick up on the colour of the rest of the house and the gutters. You have a beautiful home and I love what you have done so far. I am sure you will do a beautiful job with this area of your home

You have a beautiful home! Can you remove the trellises? Architecturally they don’t complement those spectacular grand arches. Be sure to keep water moving away from your home foundation. A quick drying rug on the tile, add a diy bench at porch, ??spray paint?? the rain gutter to match the brick. Bring the large terra cotta planters closer. Power wash pavers, nozzle on hose to clean brick. I can’t wait to see what you do, but it’s beautiful no matter what!

I agree with your thoughts on the white trellis and hangers/ flower baskets. They really do distract or takeaway from the beautiful architecture

I love those large terra cotta planters. If moved up closer to the front porch they would look perfect with the terra cotta porch tiles!

If you build a brick bed please make sure the soil is not higher than the damp proof course or you could get problems on internal house walls. Hedera will do well there but I think wisteria may need a bit more sunshine. Look out for Pyracantha or Cotoneaster, they are evergreen. They get little blossoms in spring and berries in autumn and could be shaped to fill the upright trellis space over time. Keep the lamp, yes to chair if it is a warm enough spot. Yes to dining area. So glad I found your vlog ...so genuine! For the tiles??? Not sure...what about a big outdoor rug to hit the cosy vibe with the rocking chair...a bit cheaper than replacing them!

Here's advice you may not like, at first: 🎉Don't grow any vines over those arches! 🎉 Take the trellises down. Take the hangers down. Don't cover the arches or the brick! Leave every original light fixture alone, as long as they work. *These features are architectural details that define the style and identity of the house.* They are beautiful and should be seen. Vines can ruin the mortar between bricks, as well.

Paint: The color you chose for the windows/ door is perfect! Downspout: Can you replace the white gutter and down spout (the one on the corner of the front porch) with a brown one? It needs to "blend in" to the brick. You can buy brown gutters/downspout. Get the right size. -OR- You could take it down and paint it. You have to clean it really well and use a spray paint made for metal. Do it far away from house, cars and animals. It carries. Leave the white gutters on white parts of the house.

I wouldn’t grow any climbers up and around your house, they can do damage and need maintaining (just my personal opinion). If you clean the tiled porch area, fill any cracks etc, you could paint the tiles and seal them. To add extra protection you could add an outdoor mat/rug which would look nice and welcoming. Maybe even add a small bench and put potted plants. I’m sure whatever you decide it will be great. 😊 You will have lots of options from everyone’s comments. 😂

I like the suggestions of a rug over the tiles as a quick fix. My porch rug, hiding boards that need staining, came from Amazon. It could add warmth and color. Then pick up the colors with pots or a bistro table and chairs off to the side. Plants have 4 requirements you have to consider: light, water, soil and spacing. That's all on the tag. Always factor that in when choosing a spot for a plant. Your wisteria needs 6 hours of sunlight a day to bloom and a lot of room, so the porch area isn't the best spot for it.

You have a lot of great ideas!! I feel like u need color besides brown. Rural refurb just did a porch with lime green. I love the hanging baskets. What if you plant ferns in them. Yes I would keep the light and add a chair and maybe a lamp. Can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Hi from Dublin just Subscribed by the way love your openness about doing things on the cheap and with very little experience. Fair play to you!!!! The Wisteria can you plant it in the ground to the very right of your porch it needs deep soil. An idea would be to get 4 tall post attach 2 to the house and 2 in the soil and join them at the top with even a half a pallet for it grow across it would take time but better than wrecking your foundations. I wouldn't plant the Hedera it eventually will eat into the mortar. Try using the big rug great idea. The purple plant Ajuga can be divided into many more smaller plants for ground cover or pots. The Jasmine needs more light and a much bigger deeper pot. You could check out sites like Adverts or Done Deal equivalents to see if there are freebies of anything you need there e.g. old posts refuse bins or unwanted water butts as planters. I hope some of this might help don't forget the tomato feed 😀👍 Just had a thought why not use your two boxes as window boxes and if you get pallets you could put them underneath fill in the gaps and turn them into much bigger planters with shade loving plants

Your house is adorable! I live in Iowa USA and like you I try to do projects the most economical as possible. Do you think your tiles can be painted? Maybe a masonry paint? I usually have to check at the hardware store to get an experts advise to see if it is possible. Hopefully you will get additional advise from more of your viewers. Love your channel! Good luck.

Hi, I would put different heights of pots in the corner and agree with the other comments that it could cause problems putting soil there. I also agree no climbers. The ivy I would also keep on top of as it can be very invasive as can vines. Defo a seat in the porch. The tiles and light I like. What about an out door rug on the porch ? A lovely bench or a seat with trellis with a climber with pots around it between the windows? Search all the second hand sights for your items. I look forward to seeing what you do. Enjoy ❤

I love the porch and the light. And the tiles! I wonder if it's possible to refinish or repair them in some way? Have you looked into shade-loving plants? Some pretty, colorful pots would go a long way to adding some life back there. A colorful table and chairs would do a lot, too. You're in the same garden zone as I am in North Carolina, oddly enough, but I see that some of the plants you have are not ones I'm familiar with. I'm not sure you'd want wisteria near your house, it can be invasive. It needs sun in order to bloom. English ivy grows in shade and would go up your trellis, but that can get out of control, too. Looking forward to seeing what other people say. This is one of my favorite gardening channels. She grows in the high desert, very different from you, but you could still learn a lot. Here's a video on shade gardening: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vpOBwooI_UQ.html

If you plant that Hedera, which is ivy, then you need to watch where it grows. Mine has overtaken the house, it's killed my Boston creeper and my Wisteria. So be careful with it.

Now... I'm focusing on the area between the two windows on the white wall. 0:48 Two ideas: 1. See that huge terra cotta pot back there? It would look great between those two windows, slightly off center, planted up. Honeysuckle vines will grow in the shade. They are a twining vine, so it won't attach to the walls. You could literally just use a teepee of bamboo to grow it up on. That's usually how they come from the nursery. The pot needs to have great drainage. Make more holes, if need be. And/or 2. See that iron metal benchy thing in the back? You could paint it a darker color and place it between the windows for a vine to grow on. Whatever you do...those terra cotta pots are great. Use them out front 7:23 here Add some trailing plants, like whatever is in your hanging baskets and sweet potato vine, around the edges of the honeysuckle. 3. Don't take up the pavers under the window next to the steps. That will cause drainage issues with the foundation.

Those large terra cotta planters would look great where the two box planters are under the front window. They match up with the terra cotta porch tiles.

1. The hedera might damage the brick. If it were my house I would build an arch in the back garden for it. 2. Wisteria needs 2-3 feet of depth and a very strong structure to hold it up. Clematis is a safe climber for a brick house. 3. Keep the adorable porch lamp! And a seating area would be very cute! 4. Have you thought about painting the tile instead of replacing it? (Because we know how much you love to paint!) 5. Building planter boxes, 2' deep, around the house would be very nice and give you the ability to plant deeper rooting flowers. 6. Final thought, I would try to paint as much as I could in the color green, trellis, containers, furniture. That would bring green to that part of your house and green and browns look good together. I hope you get lots of good ideas!

YES. You are underestimating the tile job. It takes some experience to do tile correctly. It's expensive as well. If it's not done well, they will pop up and crack. I like the terra cotta tiles. They match the style. Are the tiles cracked? Or, are they just scratched? The imperfections might "blend in" if you pressure wash, or super- scrub, the tiles and then reseal them. You can get a sealer for terra cotta. Choose a glossy sealer if the tiles are shiny. Use several coats, especially onvthe scratches.

I noticed you have two big round terracotta pots. One near your porch and one further back. You could place them infront of the two pillars and put your climbers in them. They are more than big enough to do so. I love your idea of putting a rocking chair on the porch, maybe you can put an outdoor rug under the chair that will hide some of the tile damage. I also love your idea of putting a bring wall over the pavers to create a raised garden bed, just make sure to fill it with shade loving shrubs and plants.
@amyk6403
@amyk6403 4 дня назад
Pressure washing the pavers would make an impact. The walls could be washed, but I'm not sure I would use that much pressure on that aggregate coating, or mortar of the brick.
@helleobinso3304
@helleobinso3304 4 дня назад
I agree with pressure washing the pavers. For washing the brick, try a nozzle sprayer on a garden hose for the brick. I use an old broom dip in a bucket of sudsy water, wash it over the brick, rinse with a nozzle sprayer.

Seating: The porch is too small for a rocking chair. Maybe a bench. BUT.... The area next to the porch (to the right, not in front) is perfect for a seating area.

The trellises are not really a great idea. If you extended them other side you would have the issue of no sun. The height of your windows are begging for larger planters. Yor little planters are cute but they almost get lost because they are so low and close to the color of the brick. Maybe a rug and bench on the front bench would work for you. A small table and chairs in the corner of the house near the front porch would be a great addition.
