Peanut! ❤ My horses love being out front, & feel pressure when behind a slow horse. Many non-gaited horses & riders do NOT understand a gaited horse that happily walks out. Very difficult to ride with them, as they expect ME to slow down, never considering that they could move on at a faster rate.

yes there should be a compromise on both sides if you want to ride together, it is very hard with some especially if they move out or have a large stride

Thanks for mentioning the ears - very important in trail riding. A lot of riders miss this signal from the horse. Good information in this video - worth watching a few times to absorb all of her advice.

Virtually all of my riding is by myself, outside, often in the middle of nowhere. This time of the year, I'm running my bird dogs from horseback, early in the morning, before it gets too warm. IMO the best thing for both the rider's confidence and the horse's confidence is to take them on solo, outside rides. There will be things that frighten the horse, and maybe you. The more the horse and rider face unforeseen circumstances, the more benign they become. You need to learn to trust the horse and the horse needs to learn to trust you. A horse will look to you more, when there are no other horses around. I often ride out and back trails, and most certainly a horse knows exactly when it's headed back. They offer more impulsion, which is enjoyable on a gaited horse. It is also the perfect place to teach the horse to travel at the speed you decide, not them. If they act up too much, I turn around and ride them away again. When they get settled down, I'll turn them for home. We head home, as long as they will travel at the speed I have set. If you ride a horse often alone outside, they will gain the confidence to lead a ride with friends, when that time comes. Lastly, some safety advice. Where I ride, there is no cell phone coverage. I carry a Garmin InReach on my person. If there is cell coverage, always have your cell phone on your person, not in a saddle bag. If you take a fall, and your horse bolts, you need to be able to reach help.
