Gaye DeRusso began her career as a professional horse trainer in the 1990's. She then went back to school and worked as an Orthopedic Physician Assistant for over 20 years.

She began her journey with gaited horses in the year 2000. Since that time, she has been an advocate for the gaited horse to gait naturally. Due to her background in Orthopedics, she also enjoys helping Veternarians that do not understand the intricacies of how gaited horse move.

Realizing many gaited horses have very little training. Gaye decided to go on a mission to help the owners of gaited horses improve their horsemanship skills as well as their horse's basic training, and gaits.

Gaye, also known as The Majestic Rider, runs a comprehensive training program in Royal Oaks, Ca. She trains and sells many different breeds of gaited horses.

Her skills set her apart from other gaited trainers. See her website for more information and many helpful articles on the gaited horse www.majesticrider.com

Do you have a preference or could you suggest what helmet and vest to use. I must start using them next time I ride, I have an 8 year old "baby".

It just depends on the horse, I start them in loose ring snaffles and then move to a shank in time for trail. I use mylar if the horse needs to be a rounder frame and wonder bit if I need to raise the horses head up more. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LIVIc9P4eKQ.htmlsi=3rAa9o6mSUUV1-2F

Perfect. For those that live in West Central Florida, Alafia State Park in Lithia has mountain bike trails, mixed with horse trails. Lots of crazies...be careful, but would make a good "final exam" for you and your horse. As always, great information Gaye.

Yep, you can't "talk" to the horse if it cant "hear" you. Riding with reins thrown away breaks communication.

Where, on the horse, do you tap your stick?
@GayeDeRusso
@GayeDeRusso 5 дней назад
I tap behind my leg and use a dressage whip so I can keep both hands on the reins. If they are drifting with their shoulders then I will tap on their shoulder to help them understand to move it back over.

Your story about trailer loading just proves what I have suspected, that horses watch and learn from how horses around them act. Makes me think extra hard about what I do with young ones in front of other young ones.

Ma'am i had a question which gait was faster, which was more comfortable, which could be ridden for endurance, which was easier on the horse. I am researching lateral and diagonal ambling gaits.
@GayeDeRusso
@GayeDeRusso 5 дней назад
The TWH usually covers more ground faster and are faster uphill. The MFT are usually faster down hill. Both are comfortable just depends on your preference so best to ride both and see. The diagonal gait is more surefooted. Both are good for endurance.

I have a new "rescue" horse, I have been ground schooling for three months due to her having an abusive idiot for a former owner.Gaye, she was doing great until the other day I tripped when walking by her and she had a heart attack. Needless to say, I have been doing crazy moves in the round pen with her. Gotta plug every hole and not tip toe around them. (-:

Yup it can happen, I have had others afraid of tripping also. So I started tripping all the time!

Hi again. Have you always done Tennessee Walkers, or other breeds too? Fascinating, thanx again. I did hunters, jumpers, three day events till my back got bad.... now I have Paso Finos. When I first met them I was shocked at how small they were...compared to 16.3 TBs, lol....but wow were they powerful...I was pleasantly surprised.

Love it. How old is Minnie?, height?, and how long have you had her? Nice stables, mouth of Carmel Valley??, on the left? Do you always ride western saddles or english too? What bit do you use, I see shanks....snaffle or a port? What fun, thanx. Are Walkers comfy?, do you post to the "trot"?, or is it just a running walk? How cool!

So awesome...lots of bridges. Love your videos from the saddle. Can see what you are doing with your hands and like that you explain what you are doing. I have gotten to where I pump with my legs to keep mine going like you had highlighted in a previous video. Seems to help mine to be mindful of their feet and not get trippy. I am also practicing keeping the leg and rein opposite the scary object ready if mine spook. Makes so much sense. Thank you for your wonderful tips. 🙂

@@GayeDeRusso Thanx for answering. Did I hear correctly that you take people out on trails? I am an experienced rider, any way I could come for a bird rock ride? I would pay good $$, and would love to take a trip to see the area again. I live in the desert southwest now. It has it's beauty too. I used to have my horses at End O Lane stables in Pacific Grove...the end of David Ave. It is also gone now. But it was on the edge of Pebble Beach and we'd ride in the forest everyday. Beauty area. Loved the fog too! Thanx again, so love it.

Being raised with horses since 7 years old . Green broke and trained 100s of horses working at a rental stable and Dad a farrier bringing home all the horses people too afraid to ride . With that said . Training a gaited horse is a bit different than a quarter horse . Although I never train my gaited horses to only gait my gaited horses canter and gallop . . Been in 2 parades and walk and swim in water

I like that technique of serpentines to gain distance from the horse in front of them. My older Walker wants his nose in the tail of the horse in front of him so I am going to try this next time we go out in a group.
@GayeDeRusso
@GayeDeRusso 9 дней назад
Consistency is the key, you have to do it every ride till they figure it out. Some figure it out fast and others take a long time, don't give up!

I used your technique of keeping the leg and rein opposite the scary object in the event they spook when my younger Walker and I went out solo this past weekend. I like that strategy. He and I did circles and serpentines when he got looky at the treeline.

Love that comment about horses don't know the dogs are behind the bush, to them it's a "barking bush".... I have a question about leg yielding. Is it mostly just using your calf to ask the horse to go to the left or right and do you use reins at the same time. I get confused when my friend tells me to leg yield my TWH to slow him down going back to the barn. I try half halts and serpentines and that helps! Thanks, Gaye!
