I'm a junior about to be a senior in my undergraduate degree program. I'm really interested in applying to law school during my senior year. Is it possible to study for the LSAT and apply to law school and still do well in your academia at school? Is it recommended or can it become too stressful?
@BrittanyTran

yes it is possible if you manage your time well (especially in your senior year i'm guessing you have a lighter load) and also I would use the summer to your advantage by studying for the LSAT during the summer and taking it early on so you get it out of the way. unless you want to take a year off after graduating to apply to law school, up to you if you want to go in right after you graduate.

When should I take the LSAT? During the summer or spring or fall or winter?
@BrittanyTran
@BrittanyTran 4 года назад
it depends - for me, I took it in the spring so that I could know my score and give myself time to retake it if needed in the summer and fall before I applied to law school. Some people like to take it up until the last time they can but then sometimes you don't know your score until after you apply to law school or while you're applying. I like to know my full stats before applying so I have a better idea of where I'm at. I would say take it early if you can so you can get it over with and focus on the other aspects of the application.
@BrittanyTran
@BrittanyTran 3 года назад
@Cindy Tatom If you want to start fall of next year you should be applying this fall, so in a few months! I would say you should take the LSAT as soon as you can since the deadlines might be this fall or the latest winter of this year. Check the website of the law schools you want to apply to in order to see when the latest you can take the LSAT will be if you're applying this fall.

i think it depends on your learning style and situation. if not COVID times, I would probably opt for in person so you're a bit more accountable and you can easily ask questions etc. whereas when you're online you might be tempted to skip around, fast forward etc. or not do all of the required tasks.

according to the LSAC website the new rule about not being able to retake if you score a 180 is only for tests taken in 2019 and beyond. Dave took his before then.

The LSAT is not a good indicator of success as an attorney. I have met many attorneys who had mediocre results on the LSAT, but yet are top-notch attorneys. And I have also met attorneys who aced the LSAT, but could not write a persuasive brief or present cogent arguments before the district court. I understand the law school must have an objective basis to determine admissions into its school. But I think the LSAT is given too much weight.
@aalegalfocus
@aalegalfocus 4 года назад
It's still correlated with a greater likelihood of passing the bar exam. Even if you can't get a super high score, if you have a good GPA (better than 3.3 imho) and a good history of interesting activities/work experience, you can still get into a top tier law school.
@timwong8556
@timwong8556 4 года назад
@@aalegalfocus I respectfully disagree that the LSAT has any correlation with passing the bar exam. Playing analytical games or logic games has absolutely nothing to do with your understanding of whether the Miranda rule applies to a given set of facts, whether this client of yours committed an intentional tort, whether a state action violate your client's due process rights, or whether there is a valid contract given these set of facts. Again, I know many excellent lawyers who had a hard time with the LSAT. The LSAT does not test legal knowledge, unlike the bar exam. You can practically memorize your way through a bar exam. Not so with the LSAT. If you understand legal concepts and can apply those concepts to a given fact pattern, the bar exam is pretty easy. I won't argue about the GPA. If you have a good GPA in college, chances are that success will carry over to law school.
@aalegalfocus
@aalegalfocus 4 года назад
@@timwong8556 well it certainly counts for something. I'd wager that people who score over 165 are much more likely to pass the bar than people who score less than 150. But as for great lawyers, no one I know is rude or geeky enough to ask lawyers what they scored, so I don't know my colleagues' scores at all. I can only guess that the ones who went to top tier schools scored higher.
@timwong8556
@timwong8556 4 года назад
@@aalegalfocus magoosh.com/lsat/2018/lsat-bar-passage-correlation/. The law school admission council is of the opinion that the correlation between LSAT and bar passage rate is not all that strong. And I'm sure there are other opinions out there that says there is a strong correlation. Suffice to say, there is a split of authorities on this.
@timwong8556
@timwong8556 4 года назад
@@aalegalfocus Whether one does well on the LSAT does count for something. I never said otherwise. It should, however, not carry so much weight in the admission process. Especially when there is a split in authority as how it ties to doing well on the bar exam. I talked with one admission officer at a top-tier law school, and this law school put undue consideration on the LSAT performance (70 percent consideration). The other 30 percent was undergraduate GPA and other factors. Needless to say, I disagree with this.

@BrittanyTran
@BrittanyTran 4 года назад
Dave's taken it 9 times starting in 2005 (www.velocitylsat.com/dave-hall). As of September 2019 you can take it a total of 7 times in your lifetime (www.lsac.org/lsat/taking-lsat/lsat-faqs). I don't know what the limit was when Dave started taking it in 2005 but I'm guessing there either wasn't a cap or they allowed it more times. It's also possible that since Dave wasn't taking it to get into law school they let him take it that many times but if he hit the limit a law school wouldn't allow him to submit that score.
