The webbers are more than likely going to need to be balanced and a wide band to get the jetting right is going to be key. They are little tricky to get tuned right from the start but once you get it you should have years of fun.

Even though it’s not webbers, I’ve had the same carb on my car for years and never needed to change anything after it was set up.
@georgesteward589
@georgesteward589 Год назад
Hey man, dealt with webbers for a while and they aren’t the best to set up without a rolling road. But to get you in the right direction here’s a list of things that I found out the long way. (I dealt with the similar rough driving issues) It’s important to get the correct jet size otherwise you will be chasing your tail forever. With regards to timing with the distributor. Even with a timing gun I found cracking the distributor loose and moving it slightly while the engine is running to find a somewhat sweet spot helped a lot for basic setup. Getting the carbs BALANCED is very important otherwise you will overwork one bank and it will never drive properly under load. And finally my most important tip. Where the carbs meet the manifold, not the manifold to the head. You can buy some gaskets that look almost like an exhaust gasket but it has a o-ring around the centre. This o-right not only seals the carbs to prevent air leaks but allows you to fit a stud kit instead of a bot to attach the carbs to the manifold. This is so you can use a nylon nut to secure the carbs (not fully tightened but snug and the nylon will stop the nut backing off) to the manifold because you don’t want the carbs to be rammed up tight against the manifold. Instead you want to have some slight wiggle room (snug) so when the carbs are attached the internal linkages don’t bind together and once again have some movement between the separate banks of carbs. I thought for months with this issue until I spoke to and old guy who use to race Ford escorts here in the uk and told me some of his tricks. Just some info i wish I knew before going the carb route. Might not be any use to you but it’s good to get some tips out there. Cheers

Webers have a main jet issue…. Either too big or too small, or missing jets. It starts right up, idles fine, part throttle is fine, it’s the main jets. Start there. I have a ton of experience with Weber carbs, been there before my man. You’ll get it, I know it.

@@Hard_Right I agree with you there is 0 comparison between his specific built drift “C6” and a bolt on factory C6 driftable street car . His build is way lighter and weight transfer / split is completely different as he built his car with a front mounted direct motor to trans with a quick change rear end that required a complete rear suspension set up , design, custom build . His frame is way stiffer just from the roll bar alone not to mention the front and rear bash bars and added chassis support . All of his front suspension is basically designed specifically for his chassis set up weight bias ( close to 50/50 as apposed to a stock bolt on C6 at 40/60 at best ? ) not to mention his track width is wider so basically the only thing a bolt on C6 like Luke Fink drives ( among a million other cars the C6 he drove here was purchased here and modded here in the us in a very short period of time ) and his fully custom specifically built for drift with 3 times the hp and torque he built is the same is overall length beyond that there is nothing comparable to his build and a bolt on stock C6 obviously period ! So happy to see you run the bike carbs even if just temporarily. Just be careful with fuel pressures. Some bike carbs are meant to be gravity fed and if you have too much fuel pressure in the float bowls it will push through the needle valve and into the vents on the top. Put some longer hoses on the vents and route them somewhere away from the exhaust. I remember almost starting a fire because my low pressure pump failed and it started gushing fuel all over my exhaust manifold. Throw a wideband on it, so you can check if the jets are big enough. If you tune them right they can provide amazing drivability thanks to the vacuum slides.

It's been a while since I worked on carbs, but there are a few things to look at. 1) Try and get a rebuild kit for then, especially to replace all the O-rings. 2) Check your jet sizes, and make sure they are correct. Can't remember what the rough sizes were but should find online. 3) Float levels need to be set. 4) Air screw as a rule I would set 2.5 turns out to start with from all the way in. 5) last thing, not carb related. Check if your vacuum advance is working on the distributor. It should as the bike carbs work, but maybe check. Good to hear the setup noises as you were running it. Good luck with the build. 🤙

As soon as I saw it stumble at WOT it was highly likely to be primary jetting. They have an idle jet and a main jet. If it idles OK and stumbles at WOT the idle jet might be close but the main is undersized. A wideband, even one made up into a scrap pipe and clamped to the tailpipe, will make life so much easier...

Hi Taylor, I do not usually comment but I work on Weber's quite often here in France -1 set fuel level perfectly in each Weber -2 check all the jets are identical in each body -3 try to get idle and synchronise all 4 bodies. To do it I close the bypass screws and try to do my best adjustin the screw between the 2 carbs then go fine adjustment with bypass screws -4 when car hot adjust idle mixture with adjusting screw (1per body) I do it by hearing the rpms -5 go for a drive and check the plugs, if you can, use an afr Then you need to adjust the jets but it is hard to explain here Good luck ! And of course before all that, check the ignition is right from idle to high rpms

Like others have said, I would highly suggest a wideband to get either carb setups tuned correctly. I put bike carbs on my 2.0l l20b Datsun and still had to tweak the jet size and needle position on the carbs to get the afrs right for cruising and under load. I would also suggest balancing the bike carbs. I use individual vacuum gauges on each runner and tune the throttle stops on the individual carbs so the vacuum matches. Over all, from experience, the bike carbs are going to be a lot simpler to get tuned in correctly and stay tuned in comparison to the webers.
@martinbernath

He could also make an oldschool diy balancer from some glass bottles and vacuum lines. Its pretty nice for just checking balance as the fluid levels dont fluctuate like a vacuum gauge needle would. Out of curiosity, how do you tune your idle mixture? I have always counted turns and then checked on my wideband but im not sure if i believe those screws, it would be nice to check mixture on individual cylinders. Or does the balancing account for mixture as well as speed? Thats the only thing i still dont fully understand, even after running bike carbs for couple years.

Often you find if it is something new on the car like Weber's, you find you need a tuning shop who has something like a cosmic tuning machine to set the jets to the car. I have fitted a brand new factory set of Weber's to a car and still had to have new jets fitted at the tuning shop. Also the turning of the distributor is adding timing towards TDC and retarding it before TDC I always used to do that with the timing light I had to have the rev's at between 800 rpm to 1000 rpm that way the revs were not affecting the timing

What I've learned from running webers on a 16v in my scirocco is that unless you know the complete history of them, never buy used. Small parts, rebuilds, shaft seals, everything is expensive and adds up really fast. They're only about 1k for a pair of 40s, which used carbs, parts and labor can easily add up to. The other thing I learned is that it's not worth the hassle, get some bike throttle bodies and run them on a microsquirt or speeduino NO2C, tune it once and just drive it. The latter combo can be had for under $500 including sensors and harness components.

To echo what others have said, a wideband is key for tuning a carb setup under load, a synchrometer or some sort of carb balance tool is going to be key for getting all 4 carbs equally set up, and a vacuum gauge (and manifold, in this case) is the tool for setting idle ignition timing and mixture. Definitely go through the Webers and get some jets so you can tune them past idle with the wide band. Watch out for wear at the throttle shaft bushings as this can be a mystery vacuum leak if they're worn enough to let air past and will make balancing them essentially impossible.

I can tell you from experience. As cool as it is to run carburetors, specifically the side drafts on this car, it's legitimately a pain in the a$$. All it takes is a minor change in air pressure or humidity, and you will have to adjust the carbs.. They're no sweet spot. You'll always have to adjust them. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to the next video on this thing.

not me screaming at the screen for the first 10 minutes saying CARBSSSSSS lol good call swapping carbs to easily narrow it down. Personally I like the look with the bike carbs and filter more. As for the timing cover back plate. Set your timing with it on then reference mark your cams to each other in the middle where they are closest to each other and you can remove the cover. Roll the engine over a few times before removing the cover to verify your marks are accurate.

I'm running on OER Racing side draft carbs and an MSD 6AL-2 programmable. I have a few service manuals that can help you along your carburetor journey. I love these cars with a 16v 4AG with carbs!

Tuning webber carbs can be really difficult sometimes. I would recommend finding someone who works on old Volkswagens to help tune them.

I had to do just this with my air cooled VW. Read all kinds of stuff and never could get them perfect. Found and old builder that knew his stuff and got it dialed in. Once he got them right I can make any minor changes that are needed.

If you don’t want the backing plate. Mark the belt with a paint marker and gears take it apart remove it and then reinstall it all. Line them all back up and then wipe the paint marker marks off. It’s what I’ve done in the past

If the seals have a spring behind the lip you can take the spring out and tighten it to make it seal against the cam better.

Even though you have disappointed me a little bit. You absolutely must rolling road tune the DCOE carburettors. Also there is a big difference between twin 40s,,42s,,45s and 48s. If you have 48s,,they are far too much. Please try to use them again 🙏 ✌️🇬🇧

As everyone is staying here.. you need to rejet the carbs but also get them in sync. They sell a tool that you can use to get them balanced and synchronized. That I itself is a dying art most people don’t really take the time to learn about that step but it is crucial.

You need to rejet the Webers on a dyno. And DCOEs have so many fuel circuits that you have to account for them all for the carbs to be happy.

I've used a Colortune to tune a bunch of carb'd volvo's and toyotas. its a great tool to see if your mixture settings is correct. Very old school tuning technique but it works great.
@martinbernath

Do you think colortune would work good for checking if idle mixture is same-ish on all cylinders? That has always been my biggest headache with my bike carb setup, making sure they all have the same mixture.
