We recently visited the Pasadena, CA headquarters of AEA, makers of classic ribbon microphones and ribbon microphone preamps. AEA is known for a number of different ribbon microphones including the R44C, R44CE, A440 and R84A.
AEA's General Manager Sammy Rothman took us on a tour of their factory to get up close and personal with their microphone manufacturing process. Sammy provided a general overview of the historic RCA ribbon microphones that initially inspired AEA's product line, and the exacting attention to detail that informs the part sourcing and manufacturing of AEA's ribbon mics.

great video, every bit of this was good information. I didn't know about the ribbon resonance tuning. This makes me want an AEA mic.

Fascinating video. I know it’s an advertisement, but it was really interesting! 👍

Interesting info I was reading. You might compare the two magnetic circuits to solid state amps versus tube amps, where the solid state amp gives it all its got then clips hard, while a tube amp compresses nice and smooth. The extension of this idea, then, is that with AlNiCo magnets, like the tube amp, you can seem to have a louder average volume since it gets compressed smoothly. With neodymium you do have sort of a different signal. However AEA still makes top notch mics and they are doing a wonderful service keeping this technology alive.
