As a home owner with buffalo grass & a sloping bush block, I needed something with guts to trim the grass & bought this line trimmer as a 4Ah kit in late 2016 & was so impressed I bought the (58V) mower then too, followed by other 58V outdoor gear (blower, hedge trimmer & chainsaw). In late 2023 I also bought the 8Ah Line Trimmer kit to get the bonus 4Ah battery to get more batteries as well as a second 58V Line Trimmer so one could be kept just for attachments, particularly the AEG pole hedge trimmer & the other just line trimming. As far as the 'slipping nipple' issue goes, I also have had the Trimmer Plus pole hedge trimmer attachment for several years (for light hedges) & it does have a longer nipple which works just fine without slipping around (I also have the AEG bike handle Brush Cutter too, which also slips). Unfortunately TTI just took the same design from the Ryobi Expand-It range & greatly improved on the gear for AEG, but sadly didn't change the mount design. The only one thing they did do better was make a substantial connection in their extension pole for the pole saw, which is more or less similar to the Milwaukee attachment design. For a simple improvement, all that is needed are the nipples to be a little longer (with a flatter end) & this issue wouldn't happen. Since my first Line Trimmer is now out of warranty I should try to improve on that nipple by drilling a hole in the end & try expanding it slightly or maybe add a screw to extend the length. I have a Ryobi Expand-It extension pole I could always borrow from (or experiment on first). Actually, on my latest Line Trimmer the clamp only had one nipple hole, while the early one had three & since the shaft has those three holes I managed to swap them over but taking the Ryobi extension pole clamp with three holes & put that on the old Line Trimmer (& the single hole AEG clamp on the Ryobi pole) so I can use attachments on either 58V Line Trimmer in three different positions if needed (particular when using the pole Hedge Trimmer attachment).

G'day Tim, 🤔No use having all that power if the shaft can't handle it & keeps coming apart under load, I'd much rather pay extra for more reliability especially if it is supposed to be a commercial model as they claim earning you money.

I like the Stihl connections for their CombI tools. Thick, chunky and easy to setup while still wearing your protective gloves. Echo and Shindawa I always have to take the gloves off to make sure you can mechanically feel they are connected correctly.

The AEG would do better with a longer nipple, and maybe adding a second one to help increase the stability of the shaft. Because the more that goes in, the less it will flex and this means less times that the shaft comes lose and moves around. Edit: Also forgot to mention that a lighter spring would be better, like you suggested. Though that would be an aftermarket part that most likely would void the warranty.
@rossthefiddler5890
@rossthefiddler5890 11 дней назад
I agree about the longer nipple. Trimmer Plus use a similar fitting & I've used their pole hedge trimmer attachment over several years with the same AEG, but earlier release (2016) line trimmer, but the Trimmer Plus gear uses a slightly longer nipple & I've had no issue with it slipping. This connection is the same as the Ryobi Expand-It (AEG & Ryobi are made by TTI).

Bought the same power head with an assortment of tools in a $700 pack. Took it back after 3 days, Bunnos said user error and sent me away. Same problem persisted (cutting out) rep came to our workplace with a loaner head, took ours away for “assessment” that was September. Last message response was January “no stock available as soon as available we’ll get it to you” rubbish product rubbish service. Stick with Husky, Stihl or ego, if your business relies on this gear.

I think Makita has the best split shaft connection. Has a lever clamp and red button that locks the 'pin' in. Fast, easy and never comes loose. The Makita XGT has a pretty soft trigger. Only thing that will annoy you is the 2 second tool shutdown of releasing safety trigger. Has on off button. No ideas why it so short. The blower and mower stay on for at least a minute.

I'd say there is something not quite right with how that attachment has connected to the shaft as it should not be doing that. Keen to see a review of Stihl battery system even if it is just borrowing that equipment due to cost because I would think a few professionals would move to battery if they knew what they were paying for was reliable and similar power to petrol
@allanmowz
@allanmowz 5 месяцев назад
Would like an in depth review of Stihl myself. But the major issue I have with those is the price per battery for the amount you get from them on the same type of insane lawns Tim does. I have kikuyu lawns too and some have taken hours of heavy trimming. I am however spoiled and have a 13 year old Makita 4-stroke that I consider the best petrol trimmer, but in their great wisdom they retired the whole petrol lineup in favour of cheap battery toys. And it'll die on me one day...

If your talking about the 60v Greenworks ... yes they are pretty good tools. I have the blower and 51cm mower for 2 years now.... mower has been faultless and the blower is powerful. My blower is developing an occasional sticky trigger issue recently but both tools are good value for the performance you get. I find that with battery mowers the front end is light so in order to get the best cut I pull up on the handle while using the push mower. This keep the front end from lifting a little and gives the most consistent cuts.

It would be interesting to see you review some more AEG 58V gear. I have recently bought my first battery mower being a 21 inch AEG 58V as I wanted the battery size as well as the metal chassis. It has plenty of power and the self propelled function is awesome but find the chute to the catcher can clog a bit as it seems a bit narrow compared to my old petrol mower.

I've had the 19" mower for over 7 seven years & the first batteries are starting to fail, so I bought this 8Ah Line Trimmer kit (first 4Ah kit bought 2016) to get extra batteries (with the bonus 4Ah) & another line trimmer to keep one for line trimming with the other for attachments, but I picked up the 21" mower early this year & ended up with two 8Ah batteries in place of the two 4Ah ones in the clearance kit (I did very well out of that deal). It throws the grass clippings nicely with the 21" model & fills the bag, whereas the smaller mower wasn't as good, particularly with damp grass. The only issue I have with the 21" is the rear plastic insert where it catches grass at the point it joins the metal chassis. I feel like I need to add a further fastener there & reshape the plastic at the bottom edge to avoid grass (& twigs) catching there.

If it is available at Bunnings, it will be a compromise over professional grade gear... always a price point to reach... Commercial users will always be happier with commercial grade gear, they rely on it and the slight extra upfront costs are soon recovered in efficiency, lower downtime, better ergonomics and longer life of the product. Some brands have a distinct DIY and trade range (Bosch Green vs. Blue) others blur the line... That joiner should have been the most durable part of the machine, it is under load and frequently used... do they ever do any real testing on these before they release them to the marketplace... It's not only AEG, many other have niggling little issues, but they do add up to a reason to look for something else... A replacement collar clamp could be engineered and retro-fitted to these to make them so much better... $10 each to get a container load made... making a more powerful version just exposes some of these issues sooner...

Tim, do you think that Stihl has the best trimmer on the market? I use a home-level trimmer that is battery powered and I love it, but the line does get tangled if it gets too long. One bad result of it. It has a pre-loaded line cartridge head on it and the line can't be longer than about 3.5 inches (sorry I am from the US - don't know metric! lol). Anyway, just curious on your thoughts of the best trimmer.

Looks like AEG should stick to white goods IMO. I know it's not top-end, but the shaft looks really flimsy. FO the price, I'd personally expect something more solid. I think you could find a swerve on what you do by consulting with designers on what an end-user actually needs. Can't say I'd buy that one having watched this, mate.

@garyjefferies6763

@@gregf4170 True, but they are all owned by the Chinese power tool giant TTI. Electrolux owns AEG but licenses TTI to distribute globally under individual manufacturer names. They (TTI) own masses of company rights to manufacture and distribute. Most are made in China and then shipped out even though company registrations are inside the receiving country. For example, Electrolux is registered here. It's a flipping minefield trying to unravel who owns what these days. My reference was to when AEG were German-owned and built to a standard that is pretty absent these days. Might have changed again as I type this 🤣🤣

You have to wonder about the prototype testing that these companies do before launching a new product. It seems fairly basic to make sure the connections on multi-tool heads actually work. My EGO line trimmer winds the string around the spindle itself with the touch of a button, so I don’t have to do it by hand. It’s not the commercial model. If I was a pro, having to rewind string by hand every time I ran out would be very annoying. Secondly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a miniature mower like the one that homeowner bought to tackle that yard. Looked fairly useless for anything. Why do people buy these tiny, underpowered toys?

It’s heavy and the body digs in on the lowest 2 setting. Does a very average cut above that. And doesn’t cut every grass leaf/blade. It like it doesn’t have enough suction on the rotation like I get from my old 15 year old B&S steelfort
