Aerial Railfanning Rocky Mountaineer: Rockies to the Red Rocks Train - Denver to Moab - May 2024

Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury scenic rail journey provider. While historically they operated trains solely in western Canada, in 2021 they launched their first train in the United States. This "Rockies to the Red Rocks" service runs from Denver, CO to Moab, UT with an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs Colorado. I spent three days in May 2024 chasing the train on a complete round trip run. The train operates on trackage owned by Union Pacific, including through the Moffatt Tunnel.

Having lived in the Denver area for the past three years now, I can say I’ve actually both seen the train consist parked in a rail yard and chatted with some of its employees at the semiannual Rocky Mountain Train Show.

They are using thier own Engines this year, and the Consist seems lots longer too.

Definitely one of my favorite trips. I'd be lying if I said I didn't look into modeling them, but I have other more pressing modeling items on my to do list.

How does this route compare with the Amtrak routes?

Almost all of the route is the same as Amtrak’s other than the last few miles to Moab

Unfortunately tickets for this train are no where near my price range so that was not an option, plus I enjoy chasing more than riding. I did look into it though!
