This video is a companion to my May 2021 article "Overextended: Proper Use of Flaps Requires Understanding of the Aerodynamics," in AOPA Pilot Magazine. For an extended conversation with Max Trescott, see Aviation News Talk Podcast episode 180 (aviationnewstalk.com).

Dr. Cavagnaro, you're the best! Love reading your AOPA articles each month. Great video!

Covered nearly all facets of flaps except one . So plz attach a chart of stall speed improvement corresponding to 1. Different flaps configs. 2. As a function of Wing area to flap Area ratio

Thanks for sharing great informative tips and advice for great topic. I would like to request if you can speak up or check your mic unable to hear that well. Thanks for sharing...!!

(4:45) As far as I know on the take-off phase flaps reduce angle of climb and rate of climb

Adding flaps typically *increases* the angle of climb but reduce climb rate.

I argue on turn radius constraint. You can always do INTENTIONAL AEROBATIC STALL TURN to literally turn on a dime. Best part u don't lose any net energy in a stall turn. Pilot license must require intentional stall turn practice

Question: By extending flaps, does the nose of the aircraft drops or pitching up? Do you have to trim aircraft for level flight if flaps are extended(Yes, I do prefer nose down for landing, since pulling up is a lot more comfortable, then pushing stick/yoke away for landing), so how nose of Cessna152 behaves as the flaps extended? Thank you!

Good question and it is very much aircraft dependent. For example, in a Piper Saratoga, extending flaps for landing requires immediate forward pressure on the yoke to compensate for the pitch up. But in my Cessna 152, there is no such tendency and it's even a little nose down.

@@catherinecavagnaro8 -- So, aerodynamic center of the airfoil changes with increased chamber, and overcomes wing position in relation to vertical CG.
