Not at all. Since the front is more open, there's more cold air coming in.

Does throwing away the rubber piece affect any functionality of the car?

Not what I've been seeing. From my observation it's only meant for more air to go towards the middle with the stock grill. Now that it has a wider opening for air, there's no need for it.
