Remember that you cannot let light get into the base water or you’ll get algae or mold. Roots are not made for light and if mint roots get light on them then they’ll sprout underneath the tray with holes. AG makes caps for the holes you don’t use, but old golf balls are the perfect size instead.

reuse old pods from the starter kit, you dont even need the grow anything kit. Just really need the fertilizer, and even that has cheaper options of better quality. I have even grown a seed in the old pod holder with a cotton ball and rocks, it all works.

Yea but the roots grow through the pods so how is that reusable.
@chrisb__
@chrisb__ Год назад
@@rickytanner3 you've got to cut the roots to remove a plant from the plastic cage-holder. This is why folks who use the aerogarden as a seed-starter stress that you should transplant seedlings that haven't had the time to develop a whole lot of crazy-long roots yet. If you use the aerogarden to start plants you're going to transplant, I recommend cutting away as much of the grow-sponge as is possible, the sponge drying out in the soil of a pot can strangle a plant's roots otherwise.

I love the aerogarden, I use mine to grow any random plant I feel like growing because they grow so big and healthy really fast, maybe because of all the oxygen and how easy it is to feed the plants properly. Ive grown peppers, tomatoes, petunias, melons, you name it. I thought 'water roots' from growing hydroponically would be a problem, but I've put all my plants directly into potting soil after a few weeks when they have big strong root systems and so far not a single plant has failed to thrive in the potting soil after being transplanted
@TheAdhdGardener
@TheAdhdGardener 3 года назад
Yes the aerogarden is good on oxygen cuz the water is always moving. What I have experimented on was the Kratkey method(hydro but without a 02 bubbler) it worked super well with my lettuce(recently did a vid on that) im moving up to tomatoe, peppers n cabbage now with the kratkey

I know us die hard gardeners would not necessarily go for this but i thought I'd show a great option for those who want to dabble in some low maintenance gardening options or who has a packed busy life😁🌱 ALSO cover the holes from the lights that are not being used. Light exposure to sun/light will grow algae

I find that basil (genovese, marseille, neapolitan and Thai, especially) and some lettuces grow really well in this, other seeds, not so much. I have had this garden for about 8 months now, and I do like it. It definitely is nice to be able to get a few leaves of fresh basil for a dish and not have to buy a whole bunch at the market that will go bad before you get a chance to use it all. I have found that you can't grow all 6 pods at once, though. The plants get too crowded and begin to shade each other out or the lettuce grows mold in the center because there is not enough air circulation. Definitely a good kit to have if you are an avid gardener who goes through withdraws in the winter months!

I know this video is two years old but I love these tabletop hydroponic units. I use generic baskets/sponges and my own seeds. The one exception is I like the Aerogarden parthenocarpic cucumber pods. I have small (4 pod) units with my house plants. I grow micro dwarf varieties in a medium (6-8 pod) unit. I don’t use all the ports on these small/medium units and cover the holes. I use a larger (10-12 pod) unit to start seedlings that I transfer into DWC system. I live in a tiny condo but have five closets. I use the walk-in closet as a grow room. I have separate grow lights for the DWC system and small oscillating fans for ventilation and to help with pollination. I have a very tiny kitchen and don’t have space on the countertop for more than my sprouting jars. The lettuces and herbs fit in nicely with the house plants. I check all my plants daily. They’re my daily dose of mental health care.

Germination doesn't require light. Light actually hinders germination for some seeds. You don't need the light until the first seedling appears. But you do need warmth and moisture. Humidity especially, hence the domes. And oxygen, hence the pump. Seedlings don't need more light than bigger plants. However, I wouldn't call 12-14 hours a lot of light. 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark is a pretty good ratio for vegetative growth for for day-neutral plants. For photoperiodic plants, 16 hours of light helps prevent flowering and seed growth. So this would be good to keep leaf growth longer without bolting. Alternately, reducing the light to 12 hours or less may be necessary to cause flower and seed/fruit growth. More than 16 hours of light is of questionable utility. It may help some plants but not others. And with LEDs, they can be really close to the plants. 2 or 3 inches may be more space than needed. If you can touch the lights without it being uncomfortable, you may be able to have the lights within an inch or even touching them. While with heavy duty high pressure sodium lamps, you may need a couple of feet of space to prevent burning.

You're lucky the mint didn't do well. My experience with mint in an aerogarden was the plant growing outrageously well and it's roots trying to grow into parts of the machine that fountain water onto the grow-sponges. It was disastrous. 😆 The best things to grow in the aerogarden are plants whose leaves you'll eat, like lettuces and basil, since those plants grow tremendously well. My experience with tomato plants was lackluster, a whole lot of time invested for very little product. @@TheAdhdGardener Awesome! I did the gallon milk jugs as well. Basically cut out a circle at the top with a box cutter and used 3" official net cups and others I made by soldering yogurt cups. The clear milk jugs are obviously prone to algae if you don't cover or spray paint them and have them parked in the actual sun. I think I also screwed some plants up because they developed the micro hair roots things and I thought it was fungus at first and rinsed the shit out of them. Whoops. I had a few things going pretty well, but I tend to need to have them in my face to be able to focus on them. I think hydroponics is a little more high maintenance than soil planting so far, but definitely good winter projects. I didn't have the thingamajigs to test the PPM or pH of the water. And I didn't get the CalMag till it was too late. Lol I have since gotten the pH meter and PPM sticks. My water is within range on the PPM, but in the high 7's to 8 on the pH meter. I am planting out an area by my work since I don't have a lot of space at home. I just put up a video today about it. Guerilla gardening and all that.

sould have checked the roots, probaly did not trim them and some of the plants did not get enough and got chocked out from the other plants roots, trim the roots so 20% is left, and when they get big enough you sould change it to a pot with soil... this is designed to help beginners grow that do not have time, then change to bigger growing space when they are grown up and can live "more" easily on there own just some notes.

The bad Very expensive for mostly plastic. I have two so it added up to $$. About $3 per month for electricity per unit. By the time to harvest the tomatoes with the electric cost, buying at the supermarket would come out ahead. I'm in California your electric bill may be different. Buttons don't work on both of mine, hit or miss, mostly miss. Seems to be a design flaw. When power goes off, need to reset time, date, everything. Should have battery backup at this price point. Root entanglement, will take some work to repot in the garden assuming if you haven't killed it. One filter missing or was it tangled with the long roots gone in the trash. Pump was clogged. The good Fun seeing it grow. Harvest all year long. Clean, most everything done for you, although roots take a lot of water and required often refills. Modified Keurig coffee K-cup works pretty good but need to remove the outer plastic. Plant also grew the fastest in it, only did one so YMMV. This was test run to see if a larger hydroponic system is viable for me.

I am in no way a gardener which is why I LOVE my Aerogarden. Just started 1.5 months ago and feel like I’m not a complete black thumb. How often do I need to replace the pods and put new ones in? Will the plants eventually just not grow?
@TheAdhdGardener
@TheAdhdGardener 3 года назад
The plant eventually will get super mature. For example if you're growing lettuce and you've harvested it 3x already the stem starts to take a hit. Also those roots grow incredibly big. You can then replace the pods

I have several, but I also garden. In my zone, this kind of cures the itch of being able to plant and grow things when you have 2 feet of snow on the ground. There are also additional seed starting trays that can be used to start your seedlings for your outdoor garden. Being I have a small house with no extra space for big lights and trays, this all in one is amazing. Fresh herbs/tomatoes/peppers/lettuce all winter and seedlings to start my garden in spring. It's a win win for me.

I haven’t a couple of questions. I am buying this as a gift. Is 6 pods enough? I saw in other comments that you may not want to do all six at one time so that gives you only 3 or 4 plants. Someone also said this does not have a timer for the light. Is that correct? Are the seed pods brand specific? Cami buy a different brand and use Aero Garden’s seeds? Thank you for taking the time to answer.
