Hydroponic Farming at Home also depends on the varieties of vegetables and flowers for optimum growing. The hydroponic setups can benefit from selections that are more optimized for the conditions of home hydroponics versus traditional crops outdoors in fields. When running profits or productivity measures based on square feet or square meters of space allotted towards growing, look at cost per square foot and output. You will want to have the most return on the dollar or other measures of return on investment. Hydroponic Farming at Home for small spaces will often mean focusing on microgreens, long harvest plants, or micro dwarf plants. Since you will be lighting your grow rooms or grow areas, cost per plant is often better with small plants and higher production. Often times, hydroponic farming at home includes growing in rooms, basements, grow tents, attics, or small outside or backyard homes. Roof tops are also included. So many big city or urban garden investors need guidance also. Be sure to subscribe to my channel to learn more about hydroponic gardening at home. Your hydroponic farming questions are welcomed. I am always looking to get more productivity on smaller areas. Also, I am always looking to get more productivity from less energy and less electricity. As a benefit to many, Professor Bernie Kratky taught me several cost savings benefits for growing crops. I have primarily expanded on his teaching in the realm of fill and forget passive hydroponics as a means of growing not just greens, microgreens, or lettuce, but to grow fruiting crops like tomatoes, peppers, squash, strawberries, and many other crops. The Kratky Method developed by Purdue University graduate, B.A. Kraty, with insights from William Frederick Gericke: who was, by the late 1920's growing enormous tomato plants in early hydroponic method. I also was fascinated in communicating with Maureen Mecozzi, who worked for the AVRDC at the time. A lot of work has been done in the Philippines with Styrofoam cups and containers in the growing of food crops. Information indicated there are over on million soil-less culture units operating in the United States for the production of food alone. Russia, France, Canada, South Africa, Holland, Japan, Australia and Germany are among other countries where hydroponics is receiving much attention. Howard Resh has been another influence, along with his pioneering research in hydroponics.

Just another thanks for your videos! I was able to convert my Classic 7-pod to LED thanks to you. I also appreciate the information on how the light affects the lettuce between Bounty models. I was able to get the 40W model on a good sale recently and no regrets.

Glad to help you, and appreciate hearing back on your success. By the way, the 40 watt AeroGarden is one of my favorites. Of all the AeroGarden countertop gardens, the 40 watt has been the most flexible in growing different plants. Happy Gardening!

That makes perfect sense. There’s no need to provide any more light intensity than the plant truly requires. I really look forward to seeing the experiments and especially how you maximize the use and get the most value of the Aerogardens- I’ll definitely be trying out the sprout seed starting tray. It’s a nice space saver.

Always fun to find real world results match up with theory. Appreciate your comments and nice to hear from you. 🌱

Hi Matt, I want to start my outside garden in my aerogardens but not have to transfer them in dirt until I plant them outside. After watching your video I learned that if you leave them in the seed starter grow deck too long the roots may get tangled and removing them may damage the plant. Would you have an idea how long I could keep tomato plants in the seed starting deck before this is an issue? Also peppers and onions?
@MattGarver
@MattGarver Год назад
@@Pine4gap Not long enough, you may want to use an intermediary sized container for getting transplants like you find in a local store nursery. Of what you mentioned, peppers would last the longest in the seed starter, then tomatoes, then onions.

@@MattGarver thank you ☺️. For the intermediary vessel, do you think a Kratky container would work?

Until you mentioned the light wattage differences in the AreoGardens I didn't even know they were different back when I was looking at maybe buying them. Thank you for doing this video comparison!

Welcome, AeroGarden makes it confusing to call 3 units all Bounty models. 30w, 40w, and 50w with computer models on only the 40w and 50w.

Nice observations. Yeah, light wattage doesn't make a huge difference in productivity of the lettuce. But they surely shape out very well.

Thanks it's great to know of others like yourself who value experimenting

Of course a grow tent would help even more to keep all the light back onto the plants. Also a roll of reflectix can be used to put around a plant (the 18" wide roll is easy to use).

Yes, but none of that in my work office. lol

Are the leaves in the 40w also spread out because they aren't planted as densely together?
@MattGarver
@MattGarver Год назад
While that plays into it, as the light intensity increased the turgor and stiffness of the leaves increased also. Nice comment, thank you!

@@MattGarver This experiment has helped me to understand why I’m seeing differences between the textures in the lettuce that I’m growing under different lighting conditions. I had no idea why the same variety of lettuce had different rigidity in its leaves when grown in my Aerogarden Bounty Basic vs in a Kratky jar under a 9 watt LED vs the IDOO machine. The wattages all vary by 10 watts- Is it correct to surmise that this difference is In regards to the light strength and the higher the wattage- the higher the (turgor) pressure build up in the cell walls of the lettuce? I see that the IDOO Hydroponic machine with its weaker 20 watt output produces far less turgor in the lettuce leaves vs the 45 watt Aerogarden free standing grow light. The crispness even prior to harvest is noticeable.
@MattGarver
@MattGarver Год назад
@@narannikulla943 As light intensity goes up, a corresponding increase in turgor happens. The benefit hits a ceiling when light intensity creates leaf burn or smaller than normal leaves. Most plants are unable to use excessive light, but thrive under ideal lighting. On a different topic, the daily light integral needs considered. There is a target DLI based off the amount of usable light and the hours per day that the light runs.

@@MattGarver Thank you for explaining- I recall seeing a few Iznik cucumber leaves that were smaller than usual when I was first trying to figure out the light distance with the two 45 watt lights initially positioned too close up. I had no idea that this was the reason.

no way this is 50W. i have a professional 100W pannel and it would be boiling if not for constant ventilation. 50W from a thin pannel like this with no heatsink is ridiculous claim.

They must be magicians. It reads 50w. I have 100w lights from Spider Farmer, Osree, Growstar, and others. Their diodes seem more focused.

@@MattGarver i understand, i was merely pointing out that Aerogarden is surely lying, not you. i am never blaming the customers for things like this, it is just not our fault. i am just starting hydroponics and it is so amazing to just quality plants indoors!
