Aes is the GOAT! He has the largest vocabulary in music and his beats are always incredible and he's been at is since the 90s. You should check out None Shall Pass, Daylight, Coffee, The Greatest Pac Man Victory in History, ZZZ Top , Zero Dark Thirty, Shrunk, and Kodokushi.... for starters. Seriously, this guy never stops, his discography is massive.
Yeah, what everyone else has said about Aesop is pretty true. The Impossible Kid in particular is a hidden gem, Aesop is very underrated. And this song is one of the best on the record! I believe the song details the struggles of not being able to complete an art piece, or not finishing the thing you always wanted to finish and losing your memory of it.
Aes gives 100% to his endeavors. This song is about how he was obsessed with and trained in visual art, but pushed it aside to focus on being the best rapper he could be, and now, after decades, he's reflecting on what he lost.
He does all his own music aswell. He is just amazing no matter how you look at it. And all of his songs are nonstop with lyrics, really a masterclass artist.
"It's not rewarding if you're not working hard at it" was perfect. It's a big running theme through his lyrics, putting in the work to make himself better, but often harshly critical of himself. He varies from being so poetically dense that you might not pick up anything on a first listen, to really dark and depressed, to simple and fun, writing about animals, pirates, or back pain. Always makes you think just a little deeper. Seems you enjoyed this a lot, so I'll throw an intro suggestion at you from this album, I consider it a trilogy of songs, that I think give a good overview of his range. The official videos are amazing, and show some of the range of his creativity beyond just lyricism (he's also produced most of his own music for decades now). "Get Out of the Car" is him feeling depressed and guilty over not being able to process the death of his best friend ("Mu" - Camu Tao). Stuck in his head, kicking himself in the ass to seek help. "Shrunk" is his (very skeptical) visit to the shrink, with the video conceptualized through an arcade game that adds layers of humor to the lyrics. From entering a player name, to the final boss fight. "Kirby" is finding a little piece of happiness in the real world, and the most adorable hip hop video you will ever see. I could name 50 more, but I think those 3 together show the basics of his anxieties and alienation, his ability to build an amazingly complex story out of a single specific moment, and his underlying humor.
His newest album came out last year called Spirit World Field Guide. As always, it's amazing and gets better with every listen. I recommend the music videos for his singles The Gates, Pizza Alley, Coveralls, and Jumping Coffin in that order since there's sort of a narrative that's told through the videos. Also, he has done his own beats and rhymes for all of his albums since Skelethon
It honestly took me a little while to even notice your stutter man. I checked the description and found the speech practice hashtag and just wanted to say you're doing really well! Aes is my favourite artist, and I'll certainly stick around if you check out more of his stuff. Big ups!
now listen to the song from the start knowing this song is about visual arts, and go on to see how visual arts influence how his songs as a whole are crafted.. and you only begin to scratch the surface of what aesop rock does
(for context i have never known anyone with a stutter) but honestly, good on you to have to have the confidence to speak so honestly with with a deep insighto
Enjoyed your reaction aes is master class it might help to print out some lyrics. Do more coffee was the first song I heard from him in 08 but he’s been around the ny underground scene forever gotta check out everything he’s done you really can’t go wrong
The video for this one is really illuminating with the lyrics once you get a handle on them -- I'm not good enough to figure out much of my first listens usually but it really does start to come together :)
You can't really go wrong with any song by Aes. My personal recommendations would be No Regrets, Flashflood, Daylight/Nightlight, The Harbor is Yours, Big Bang, The Gates, None Shall Pass, Coffee. You should also check out Acid King by Malibu Ken, which is Aes with a producer named Tobacco.
I will always upvote an Aesop video. This is the track that really made me stop and listen to Aesop Rock. I heard some of his other tracks but didn't really listen to them. This one though grabbed my attention as I really identified with it. It made me want to hear what else he was putting out. The deal with Aesop is, you have to really listen to it, and listen to it several times before it really sinks in. The only down side of Aesop Rock is that a byproduct of listening to him makes most other rappers seem really simplistic. ;)
I’m a hip hop fan, along with many other genres but I love hip hop, and seeing your channel name I have a strong feeling I’m dealing with another orchestra nerd. Was all state solo ensemble cello some 15 years ago.
One day and say 20 maybe 30 years when planet earth catches up they are going to say a Aesop Rock was the most advanced killing machine of a lyricist that the world has ever known. You think?
fo real the uNiVerse is giddy it got as far as creating him. he's like a video game save spot where now that you got that far u don't have to spend time going thru the lower levels again and again
Do you have a stutter? I have one as well, but I didn’t really notice until my wife asked because she said “did you record a video?” Love your reaction
@@staccat0 right on, glad you’re sharing! Do you want a few underground gems to listen (or react) to? A lot of the hip hop i dig (Aesop included) doesn’t have a ton of coverage and based on your reaction i think you may be into ‘em
Love this artist. Such different material. Way more introspective than most rap. Check out MF DOOM or Homeboy Sandman if your looking for other lyrical masters.
