How different AFCI Circuit Breakers and Outlets work, and how to test them. I am using the Klein Tools RT-310 tester.

An interesting and useful tool for sure. Having it indicate a live circuit when no neutral/ground is present is an easy sell for me. Iv always used the simple 3-light plug tester, and was unaware of this (albeit obvious) safety issue. If you are working quick and see no lights, it would be easy to jump to conclusions if you forget to give it a wave with a flux sniffer.

thanks for this. The last portion was great advice as to the $10 versions vs. the $50 RT310

Thanks you saved the day.i had a arc fault breaker not tripping at the plug with my plug in gfi tester.but it would trip with test button on afci breaker..I was ready to pull my hair out.my tester worked great with combination afci/ Gfci..👍

Eaton doesn’t make 2 pole BR style dual function gfci afci breakers, so either gfci, afci, or dual function outlet receptacles are necessary to provide both both gfci and afci protection on multi wire branch circuits.

good to know this tester indicates two faults at once, the more expensive ideal suretest says in the instructions it will not indicate two faults.

Thanks. I just used your affiliate link and ordered the Klein. I added 3 circuits and one is tripping, so I needed to know if there is a wiring issue or a AFCI/GFCI issue.

Why???? No need, we, as electricians, need to band together and attack electrical companies poor maintenance over the years. They give us power, great, but how old are the wires and the poles that supply really are? The electrical industry needs to start questioning the the suppliers on this.

To reset a hold button down on breaker while reset breaker until it flashes let go it flashes on off for 8 to 10 seconds to clear all code on breaker

Thanks for the vid. I just purchased one and when I turn it on the open hot light is already lit. Is this normal? I'm wondering if I received a faulty unit because every receptacle in my home is lighting the red wiring warning and correct wiring.

Just ordered one from the link. Put a bathroom addition on recently having trouble with afci/gfci breaker tripping with hair dryer. Possibly Eaton BR breaker in a Siemens QP panel? Or drywall screw found romex wire? Any ideas would be appreciated...also new subscriber

I just like to say thanks your videos are really good I'm not an electrician... so if you're going to be working with electricity check out Klein products they are great the prices are reasonable I have a 700 clamp meter and a 600 multimeter very easy to use they work great thanks.👍

I have 3 Eaton breakers that throw constantly, 2 are Dual purpose to washing machine and the other to the kitchen, the 3rd is a type BR combination AFCI. Do breakers go bad? The washing machine breaker just started acting up but the other 2 have been doing this for a while. House is 3 years old.

Does the dual GFCI/AFCI outlet protect against arcs anywhere on the circuit or only downstream from the outlet?

Thanks for the videos! Question: I bought the Klein RT310 and used to test GFCI outlets. I have two new Eaton outlets that when tripped indicate Open Neutral and Open Ground. I have a couple older GFCI outlets that when tripped indicate Open Hot only. Is this normal or should I replace these GFCI outlets that indicate open Hot only?

I subscribed a year ago, finally the pay off. I have wanted a afci tester that I could trust and have heard alot of other people in the field saying reliability of the afci testers has been poor. As a electrician I would like to pretest houses before the inspector and have not been testing the AFCI function would this tester be a good one for long term durability on a daily basis? I have the toughmeters from them and have been happy with all but the leads.
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 5 лет назад
Mozif This tester is very durable. It is built well, and has a high drop rating. I have tested hundreds of outlets with it, and it works great. I did blow a fuse in it one time, when I was stressing it very hard. But, the fuse is replaceable, and was easy. My original plan for this video was to feature both this tester, and the Amprobe INSP-3. But, the Amprobe did not work on all the breakers, and it actually failed on the 5th test. That is a $350 tester, compared to this $50 one, and this one works better, in my opinion.

So afci works like regular breaker? In the case of a short circuit regular breaker will trip as well.
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 3 года назад
An AFCI breaker will trip when the current exceeds the rating of the breaker, or on a short circuit, like a “standard” breaker does. But, it also trips when arcing is detected, like when a frayed wire is arcing and creating sparks between the hot wire and the ground or neutral wire.

Why didn’t you show the ampobe insp-3 that was laying on the table. It tests AFCI, and all 3 GFI breakers? :-)
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 4 года назад
Well, my plan WAS to do a comparison. But, the very first test I did with the Amprobe, it failed with an internal fault. So, rather than do the comparison, I just tested the Klein.
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 3 года назад
Justin T I got a new Amprobe, and did a video testing it against the Klein. It did not do well.

AFCI test ... so does this test parallel arc or series arc? My assumption is that it does not test the series arc b/c that would be a different test aka different button.
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 5 лет назад
Yes, this generates a parallel arc. It is almost impossible to simulate a series arc that will work on all models of breakers.

is there a tester that indicates if the neutral and ground are reversed?
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 3 года назад
I have never seen one. That would be almost impossible to tell for sure, and would just be a guess, so why bother?
@glengivens8986
@glengivens8986 2 года назад
This instance could provide an unbalanced load on a shared neutral multi wire circuit, which could place a voltage on the plugged in item’s chasis. That would be bad.

One question, my contractor put or install AFCI in all outlets in the apartment. He charged me $25 for the 28 outlets in the apartment , plus labor. Do you think this is correct to install all ACFI in all the outlets in the apartment?

You would have to create an overcurrent condition, I.e.: direct short to ground/neutral. I have heard Breaker manufacturer’s recommend replacement after an overcurrent trip to maintain reliable circuit protection. You can make your own tester and is available in any kitchen silverware drawer. Just bend the middle prongs of a fork and stick the unbent prongs in the receptacle. (^^DON’T ^^ DO ^^ THIS^^)

You can’t share a neutral on an GFCI or AFCI.
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 5 лет назад
Not true. Google "GE AFCI shared neutral". It will return a GE white paper discussing this. I tried to post a link to it, but RU-vid wouldn't let me.

Think he’s referring to a 2-pole breaker, with a tie bar. Not a completely separate circuit.

Reality the electrical companies are at fault not home or industry is at fault. The need for such breakers is like protecting us from a electrical company not doing simple maintenance.
