Série C has a second group phase and a final to decide the champion but other than that it's normal-ish. Série D is where the madness is at. It has 64 clubs, divided in 8 region-based groups. The top 4 of each group go into a 32-team playoff bracket that would make Infantino have weird ideas, and the 4 teams reaching the semifinal get spots to the Série C. "OK, so far so normal" - yea, I know. Just a big championship, right? WRONG. Only 4 spots in the next year's Série D are guaranteed (for the relegated teams from Série C). All other 60 spots are decided by the teams' positions in the previous year's state championships. So, if you failed to qualify for Série D in your state, and you failed to get promoted from Série D, no national football for you next year. Which means, no revenue for most of the year. Which means, you're so so so fucked (also teams from ALL divisions play the state championships because fuck having breathing room in a footballer's calendar)

For example, the team he plays for, PAOK, is assosciated with gate 4, and their fiercest rivals ARIS are assosciated with 3. The reason they skip 3, is because of the shared hatred of these clubs, and the saying "There is no 3 in Toumba" (Toumba being PAOK's stadium.)
