On July 17, I began an attempted thru-hike of the Colorado Trail. I’m heading southbound from Denver to Durango.
This is Episode 4 in the series in which I hike from Breckenridge to Tennessee Pass and Leadville, CO. It also includes Copper Mountain, the Copper Mountain resort and ski area, Searle Pass, Kokomo Pass and Camp Hale.
Total trip days in this video: Day 9 to Day 11.
The Segments included are the last part of Segment 7 (Gold Hill Trailhead to Copper Mountain), and Segment 8 (Copper Mountain to Tennessee Pass Trailhead). Other points of interest are Elk Ridge, Cataract Creek, and the historic Camp Hale bunkers.
Liz is making videos too. At RU-vid: “Liz Kidder”

I am hoping to do this trail next summer. I appreciate the realism of the videos. Most of these RU-vid videos make it seem like everything is sunshine and roses all the time. It is a difficult endeavor and I appreciate the honesty

I'm glad your feet are better. I am always affected by altitude, so I am incredibly impressed that you ( and Liz) can do all those high altitude miles. Take care.

Love that you and Liz are filming the same hike at the same time. The difference in prospective makes viewing your journey more fun and interesting. Especially appreciate the honesty on the difficulties. Thanks for sharing.

My issue skiing in Breckenridge was not being able to sleep. I would hyperventilate anytime that I moved at night. I also had no appetite. I called it the Ski Breckenridge weight loss diet. You and Liz are doing awesome!

Nothing like breaking tree line in the Rocky Mountains...it improves one's fashion sense as well as energizing them. Good motion pitcher sir.

Your campsite after Copper Mt looked really familiar. So familiar that I looked at my pictures and video of my CT hike. Yep, I camped in that same spot, August 17, 2017. I was pretty tired and skipped Elbert and went to Twin Lakes spending the afternoon there having beers instead. Thanks for sparking the memories!

Your scenery shows why I love the Colorado backcountry. I run there in the mountains as often I fly into town. Leadville is the best mountain town - such great scenery and such a cool vibe.

Enjoy Elbert! It's my favorite mountain in Colorado. I summited Elbert and Massive in the same week. Then the next week I drove to Denver and started my successful thru-hike of the Colorado Trail in 2021. You videos bring back memories! 👍
@EvansBackpackingVideos
@EvansBackpackingVideos Год назад
That must have been an epic but thoroughly tiring start to your thru-hike. We summited Elbert today and it was 300% harder than I expected. Tomorrow, Hope Pass. After Elbert the rest of the trail will be a piece of cake, fingers crossed!

@@EvansBackpackingVideos Please be very careful on the decent over Hope Pass. It's extremely steep. It's the only place I took a bad fall on the trail. I broke a trekking pole and skinned up my left hand.

Enjoyed more of the great scenery on these segments of the CT. I was hoping for a shot of the bridged you crossed at Cataract Falls built in 2019 with a bit of help from me and a bunch of other CT volunteers and a NFS crew. I've got a video of that project. As a flatlander too, the higher elevations destroy my appetite also even though I'll acclimatize for a week or so at lower elevations.

You'll be going to a higher altitude on foot than I've ever been as a pilot, that's pretty impressive! It's also impressive that you can record, edit, and post these updates along the way -- keep them coming, thanks, and best wishes for happy and safe adventures.

I've skied at all those areas... Keystone, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge. I ALWAYS find the altitude to be a huge challenge flying in from the Chicago area. Always have headaches, sleep problems, lack of appetite. Some people acclimate to the altitude better than others. I guess I'm one of the types that doesn't acclimate easily. You've got this! You're tough! You've got grit! You're in excellent physical shape. I hope your feet heal ok... that will be your Achilles heel, lolol. I know you know this but drink as much water as you can stand. It really helps with the altitude. Good luck! It doesn't get any more beautiful. What a great thing to experience. Tell Liz "hey". I'm following her too. Sorry to see Luke go. He's always happy, confident and positive.

I was on a big family vacation in Breckenridge last June. I live near sea level but spend lots of time in the summer hiking at elevation in the Sierras. I didn't have a chance to get some elevation exposure before the trip, and was miserable the first full day. Nausea, bad headache, easily fatigued, took a 3-hour nap without intending to. Next time I go to Rockies I'm absolutely bringing some diamox. Maybe you can go to an urgent care and get a script on your next resupply?
