Learning the craft of roasting requires many hours of practice. s. Most home roasters do not give a very good simulation of the production roast process, and investing in a professional sample roaster is not a realistic option for most enthusiasts. The Huky 500 is an excellent solution for those looking to get a real feel for the art of roasting. Check it out!

I think for a beginner, a coffee roaster selling for under $300 makes more sense. Why, because not all beginners are going to fall in love with roasting coffee for the long term and become professional roasters. So, realistically just buy an inexpensive less difficult roaster to operate and try different coffees and methods because if you lose interest or figure out that you can't drink 1 1/2 lbs of coffee in a week, you're only out a small investment. Also, if you're married and your wife doesn't share your enthusiasm or passion for (any of your hobbies) coffee roasting to include the coffee roasting smell and mess, then face it, you now have two strikes against you..... But some very expensive small roasters do have a nice appearance and would work well as a flower planter in your kitchen.

I TOTALLY disagree for several reasons : 1. If you buy a cheap roaster you can't have enough control on it, you can't apply the theory, and your poor results will cause disapointment and lead you to give up roasting 2. Cheap roasters only works with convective energy not conductive (it is A BIG DRAWBACK to get a proper bean development) 2. If your wife dictates your life, you should either find another wife or trying to be a man...

The Koreans have the Kaldi Home (400~500 USD, drum and motor/hand crank) and Kaldi Wide (600+ USD, drum and motor) selling on eBay, Amazon or Gmarket (Korean eBay). These can roast 200~300 grams of green coffee. They have a similar build and peripherals as the Hulky.

Could you give more info on the heat snorers and gauge you use please. I am almost sold on a Huky but want to research the sensors a bit more first.

You mentioned that you were able to roast 600-700 grams on this machine. What are you roasting, are you sourcing your own heat, and where are you taking it? The roaster is rated at 500 grams on the Crop to Cup site, and a Huky user did a clip with Sweet Maria's, and he indicated that he had some issues reaching FC at a 500 gram charge with the IR burner provided with the kit. He indicated that the sweet spot is around 450 grams.

Wow! That's impressive. No beginner coffee roaster should come anywhere close to $2,000, or $1,000 or $500. If you are talking roasting coffee for home use, maybe a pound at a time, you can make a reliable, reproducible roaster for under $50. Maybe not as elegant as the fancy chrome roaster with all the bells and whistles, but a repurposed bread machine from a thrift store and a heat gun will produce beautifully roasted coffee.

So, you consider $2000.00 "affordable" for a learning roaster?? That's crazy, man.

Bob Snelgrove Or you can go the route that myself and many other roasters go. I bought a Behmore ($300) then a Gene ($550) then another Gene ($550) when my first Gene's heat element went out and I was waiting for parts. Now I am in the market for a sample roaster and looking in the $4K to $7K range. I really wish I had the $1400 to apply to a sample roaster right now. You can buy what you want the first time or upgrade down the road at a much higher cost. I have a couple friends that have the HUKY and love it.

Lots of complaints about the price of a roaster and let me put it this way. Try it on a cheap method knowing the roast won't be perfect like a bowl and heat gun method or pop corn popper. Look at how much coffee you drink. I go through about 1.5 bags of coffee and I was spending on avg $10 per 12oz bag. I now buy my beans for about $4 on avg per lb, some more and some less. Roasting at home costs pennies per pound and same with storage. So how much am I saving a year roasting my own coffee? $468! My parents go through about a bag a day, no joke, $2190 in a year if they roasted their own beans. I started with a Fresh Roast 500 series, paid for itself in no time.

Why is it so expensive? gas heaters are cheap, steal frame can be taken from old gas bomb, or old small washing machine, electronics is cheap. Pipes can be made very cheap on a pipe machine, bending and all.

Ikawa isn't meant for batch roasting, it's a sample roaster (50g). It may produce amazing results and has a great community. It's all fun until you realize you've got to offgas for 2 days thus roasting on a daily basis is a necessity.
