I think some people forget getting an authentic digital rangefinder experience is a very niche segment and there aren't a hell of a lot of options. And, there is something nice and unique with the Leica M bodies. That being said and knowing just how much the camera body itself costs, getting a set of matching Leica lenses is a whole other half of the total Leica Rangefinder experience equation. Many are just as much as the camera body of not more than. Hey, if one can get the full and total Leica Rangefinder system experience, then great. But, I very much appreciate the fact there are affordable options to at least get the true rangefinder experience with a Leica M camera bodies. At least one can at the very least get that tactile true digital rangefinder experience that frankly Leica is primarily the only one to produce and have a decent range of affordable lenses that are far from shabby and offer more than adequate image quality. Let's leave the camera gear snobberism behind... I think the experience and perhaps fun of shooting with a true digital rangefinder camera can be within reasonable financial reach if that's what one is primarily aiming for and not ultimate IQ with super expensive lenses a ove and beyond the base rangefinder shooting experience. Of course there are analog film body alternatives which aren't as expensive. Still, it's a different process and processing film if not finding the time and space to process yourself is not necessarily without it's costs in time and money as well. I know there is a new French digital rangefinder that isn't as expensive. Forgot the name. But, it's not the same thing in quality and the feel in hands as a Leica. Going back to the lenses. I've owned a few and image quality is quite good. I'm glad to have them in M mount as they have adapted to my mirrorless cameras for added use and versatility.

You will get aperture metadata for any of these lens on your Leica M digital body because the M camera always guess for your aperture settings regardless of whether or not they are coded. The code just helps the camera to identify the Leica lens and you can choose a similar Leica lens in the settings manually for these TTartisan lens.

I found with 7Artisan 50mm 1.1 the focus shift was out of control. You could dial it in for 1m, but then infinity would be off. If you dialed in for 5-10m, then 0.7m would be way off. Basically it was impossible to get it dialed in through the whole range on a rangefinder. I ended up selling it and getting the Voigtlander 50mm 1.2. That lens was actually reliable across the range. I no longer consider these Chinese lenses as they cannot be properly aligned for a ranger finder. They would however work fine on mirrorless where you shoot with EVF.

The 21 is pretty good, its very glowy wide open. Stop down a half stop to 1.8 (1.9?) its actually quite sharp. People like to talk down on cheap lenses on M bodies but who cares. If its a less used focal length then it really makes sense to get a budget (but still pretty good) lens to play with. Their 35s are probably the best performing of their lineup though.

I’m using the Ttartisan 50mm on my M6 and love what I’ve achieved so far. You didn’t mention calibration. Curious if you had to calibrate before using or if it was pre-calibrated from the manufacturer?

I don't get it. Why would you spend a fortune on a Leica camera (even a used one) and then miss out on their biggest strength? It's the optics that make a Leica so unique rather than the cameras. It's the optical characteristics where Leica does excel and which nobody can quite match. The striking balance of sharpness, color, contrast, falloff, out of focus rendition and and and. It's like buying a Porsche and then fitting it with cheap Chinese tires. You still have a Porsche and people admire you for it, but your Porsche does not bring its power to the ground, does not steer well, suffers from Aquaplaning, so on and so forth. To me, it makes much more sense to buy used Leica glass.

Do you need to adjust the focus of these lenses? I know that the focus instruction comes in the box, but do we really need to adjust before using? Or it came adjusted already?

The 28 f5.6 I bought new was spot on out of the box. With a digital body they are simple to adjust anyway.

The lens makes the picture. Looking at the samples this is not Leica Class. If I spends the money on a Leica why would I buy a "Walmart Lens"?

I reckon that a lot of people buy a Leica M for the rangefinder. Sadly a rangefinder camera is expensive. If one invest in a rangefinder camera maybe they won’t have the money to buy a noctulix

All Leica fast lenses performed much better at 2,8 +. Full open is always special and no one can think that out of center frame will be perfect. That is why the dream come truth.

I’ve never really understood these lenses. Why on earth spend $12,000 on a Leica but then buy a $500 lens? I know you guys are just a dealer, and this RU-vid video is a marketing vehicle. But buying a TTArtisan lens for a Leica just runs so contrary to the prevailing logic behind buying a Leica in the first place that I’m not sure I’ll ever understand. It’s like buying a Lamborghini and then filling it with the cheapest discount gas you can find.

Exactly. That said, if I ever go back to Leica I do like the shape/look of the Voigtlander 50/1.4 and I always had one back in the day.

Used Leicas are still more expensive than used camera from other manufacturers. That logic doesn’t hold. It’s a luxury item that’s charging dollars for intangibles. The name. Clout. Mystique. History. About the only tangible benefit of a Leica is that it’s hand-made and has that attention to detail put into it. But to then go and slap a cheapo, mass-made lens on it from a company with poor quality control.. like, why did anyone go and buy the Leica in the first place? The value proposition of the lens directly contradicts the value proposition of the camera. Why not buy almost any digital mirrorless camera, adapt the TTArtisan lens to it, and get better image quality, handling, battery life? Or buy a Fuji X-Pro2 and some Fuji lenses and get the same benefits as above with the “rangefinder experience” and a stack of cash left over? Or if you’re a film photographer buy one of the knock-off Leicas that have the same handling but a fraction of the price. Is someone really going to be cheaping out on lenses but sending a film Leica back to Germany to have the rangefinder coupling calibrated for more than the lens costs? Anyway, like I said, to me it doesn’t make sense. People buying the cheapest used Leicas they can afford and then buying the most frugal lenses available seem to be trying to gain access to the intangibles of owning a Leica but are at the same time ironically diluting them. Or perhaps they are buying into a fallacy that the camera has magical properties which they think somehow also affect the photons bent through low-quality glass. A camera body doesn’t have any bearing on film, and it’s almost cliche at this point to mention that Leica don’t have some type of magical advantage when it comes to digital image quality. The images one is getting are almost completely attributable to the lens. I say this as someone who has no desire to engage in that particular set of intangibles. If people have the means to spend 20K on Leica kit then go right ahead. Seems like a poor spend from my point of view but unless capitalism collapses it is what it is and rich people are gonna do what rich people do. If the most someone can afford is a $500 TTArtisan lens adapted to a Canon RP there’s no shame in that. But if someone can barely afford a TTArtisan lens after purchasing a used Leica… then why buy the Leica in the first place? It’s not magic, and there’s nothing on offer there that can’t be had in a more affordable way. Anyway, I’m sure this is going to inspire some ire. But I’ve seen too many people run themselves broke chasing luxury smoke. It gets my hackles up.

You said "they can be adapted to use on other cameras" and then mentioned Fuji among others. I use a TT Artisans 17mm f1.4 and a 50mm f1.2 and they both came in Fuji mount and do not need any 'adapting'. I think your statement is misleading and could put people off buying one of these lenses as they might believe they will have to buy an adaptor as well as the lens.

Hi and thanks for watching and the comment. I am sorry you felt that statement was misleading. TT artisan does make some lenses in the Fuji mount however in the episode we were talking about full frame options which do require an adapter to work. This episode was meant as an introduction into this line of optics and wasn't a full review of their lineup. How are you finding the 17mm and the 50mm on your Fuji?

The price point of Chinese lens comes a high human price, and ugly human rights issues. I’d reevaluate your market audience and your own morale compass before pushing these products. There’s a reason for the price point and it’s ugly. A company copying Leica lens down the fonts, and making knock offs is offensive and should be removed from the ligament camera industry.
