I bought the 12ga sporting model earlier in the year. I shoot at least 2 boxes a week, usually around 6 a week. At this point, I’ve put over 2500 rounds through mine and had 0 issues. It’s a great gun for the money, very smooth in the action and it handles great. If there was anything I would critique, I wish it came with a carrying case and I also wish the safety had a detent when selecting between the over and under barrels, like you said it just slides around. I will say, however, it loosens up slightly from the factory and remains stiff enough to not slip around so that’s not really an issue. Great gun and I’m glad I bought it!!
I’ve had my Orion for almost 2 years and have several thousand rounds through it via various hunts and sporting clays. It is a little heavier than some but that definitely aids with recoil reduction. The weight is not a hindrance however in the field. As you would expect no issues as the gun shoots and ejects every time as it should. It’s a little stiff out of the box but a few boxes and proper lubrication remedies that quickly. For the $$ it’s a well built Turkish gun. People who have the older Japanese made Orion do say the quality is not the same.
I picked up an Orion a few months ago, and I'm really enjoying it. I lucked out that it fits me pretty well. It's still a bit stiff opening and closing but it's getting better. Thanks for the review and recommendation!
Im looking for an o/u as a first time buyer rn and Ive noticed a lot of the budget guns break in various ways not too long into ownership. A lot of reviews also say the barrels dont shoot eaxtly where the gun points, would love to see u add those 2 aspects of the reviews.
I bought the 12 gauge and you're right, it's a heavy gun. Tore it down, cleaned and lubed it, headed to the range with 4 boxes of shells. By the mid point of the third round of trap, it was beating the hell out of me. Bad face slap, and when I got home I discovered it had bruised the hell out of my shoulder. So, I took the recoil pad off and discovered it was 1/2" of hard rubber. No flex or recoil absorption at all. Got online, priced out a FalconStrike and ordered it. Came in 5 days later, took 20 minutes to mount, simple and straight forward. Now my LOP is over 14.5", gun mounts well, just waiting to head back to the range to shoot it and see how well the new recoil pad does it's job.
I own more expensive guns. But this gun Is my favorite. The weatherby Orion is my gun. I own a silver pigeon and a citori and a franchi this gun is a better shot than the expensive ones. Looks don’t matter. What matters is the experience during shooting and the experience of hitting the targets. This gun hits comfortably!
The bottom barrel quit firing on my Orion 20 gage after less than 200 rounds. I sent it back to Weatherby and the problem was solved. Weatherby has great customer service.
I don’t own an Orion, but I own a Upland Element from Weatherby, after 10 shells the fiber optic fell out of the front sight. One phone call later and they sent me a new one. Great customer service
Update - finally got the gun back after 6 weeks and after less than 75 rounds the bottom barrel quit firing again. Same problem as before. Sportsman's Warehouse said Weatherby made some "adjustments" to the firearm. Now have to fight with Sportsman's to replace the gun since I purchased their Firearm Service Plan. My take is since the factory already had a chance to make the repair and failed, that the gun is defective and Sportsman's should replace it. I really like the gun, but now I'm wary about Weatherby products in general.
Would love to see you review the sporting Orion model too, has some more target oriented features like a more vertical grip and 30in ported barrels, I wonder if the heavy triggers are less heavy on the sporting model
My 15 yr old son shoots a orion sporting model that he recieved last year. He shoots skeet, trap, and sporting clays with it for mid-carolina young guns and absolutely loves it. There is alot of people that mistake it for a browning citori. Even had an advanced coaching instructor shot it and thought it was his favorite gun (browning citori) until he was looking at it later. Very good gun for the money as there has been many rounds so far put through the one my son has.
As always, excellent review. Can you review the Yildiz Legacy HPS 20-Gauge 3 in OU Shotgun? Sold only by Academy. It runs $569 with steel receiver, 28 inch barrels, auto ejectors and much more. Yildiz also makes the Yildiz Sporting HPS 12 Gauge 30 in OU Shotgun. The 12 guage sells for $729. This are the price point many folks like me can affort and would love to see you review either one. Thank you
I brought my Weatherby Orion in March of last year went to the shooting range about 3 to 500 rounds no problems love the gun swings great little bit of recoil when Dove Hunting did the best I’ve ever done in five years got lots of birds love Weatherby my son has the 20 gauge element loved it
I have a 12 ga with 26"barrels. I got it last year for about $900. I mostly hunt pheasants and squirrels with it. I've also taken it turkey hunting and to shoot trap a few times. No mechanical problems so far. I think it's heavy, but I don't have any other o/u to compare it to. It seems well built compared to other "budget" o/u in this price range.
Any word on how this O/U compares to something like the CZ Redhead Premier that MSRP's for about $50 less? Looking at getting my first O/U in about the $750-$1k price range and I'm really digging the looks of the Orion. Also anybody know how the feel is for a left handed shooter?
Weatherby shotguns are made by ATA and other Turkish suppliers. So, it is better to directly buy Turkish break actions instead of getting fooled by American name😁
Hi. This is Nabil. Fair lawn NJ. I own berettas, a franchi, greenwing but this is my favorite gun to aim and shoot. Am 6 feet tall with long arms. The visibility while swinging Is immaculate with the Weatherby Orion . Better than my silver pigeon and the franchi.
I’ve noticed that your journey through shotguns started in the semiautomatic trick shot end of the spectrum and you’re reviewing o/u now. Coming from a the plastic guns to the mostly wood guns you are attracted to the ornate side other o/u world, as most are that newly arrive. You seem to gravitate to the machine engraved guns. For those that have spent most of their time in the o/u world they tend to not be attracted to the machine engraving and prefer less ornate guns unless they can get their hands on a hand engraved gun. Continue on your trail.
As of right now, with most shotguns I will only review one of the guns from a line. With all the different variations and gauges, it would cost a fortune to acquire all of those guns. As of now, the manufactures are not helping support the channel by sending me shotguns.
If your not familiar with the integral multi-choke system is is the same as a Browning Standard Invector choke tube I have one of the Orion 1s and love it.
Really enjoy your reviews on O/Us! Would you consider doing one on the CZA USA Red Head Premier? It is apart of their All Terrain series and has been mentioned as a decent option for the price in Gun Dog and Project Upland Magazine.
Got my Orion recently. 28" with Matte Blue Finish (Didn't like the look of the gloss since it makes it look plastic and didn't want 30" sporting). The one I picked has BEAUTIFUL wood with knots in the wood grain. Couldn't Say no after seeing it! This was my first, and already I can never wait to go back to clay Pidgeon shooting. Also threw on a Multi-Fit Falcon Strike Recoil pad, which works incredibly well with it! Love that it's 28" that I can throw on some extended Carlson Modified Chokes. Absolutely no regrets! Just shot 71 out of 76 at the clay range yesterday!
I got the Weatherby Orion Sporting for $800. It’s been great for clay shooting. I rarely miss. No malfunctions with 300-400 rounds threw it and I like it. Only issue might be that after shoot both rounds out, then try to open you have to open it yourself, it doesn’t lay down itself like other over and unders, but for $800 you can really complain, it shoots great and does it’s job.
You do a great job of reviewing guns. But could you please talk about the safety. For me with grandkids shooting its a big deal to have the auto safety so the gun goes automatically on safe when broke open. So does this Weatherby have auto safe? Thank you.
I’m in the market for something like this… sub $1000, being $1000 my max budget, not into the looks at this price point, I want performance and quality build, so I am looking at this model.
Turkish made and won’t last, I was so disappointed with the finish on mine that I actually assembled it and sold it. I suppose for the money it’s a good buy but if you’re looking for heirloom quality, you won’t find it in the Orion.
Affordable? I’m looking at the Charles Daly 202A over under… Retail at $419.00. Also looking at the Stevens 301 turkey 20 gauge… both for under $700.00!
I have a sporting model in 20 ga. Shoots very well except fast rounds of trap the barrel heat comes thru the forend. A light glove on my left hand solved the problem.
I own the 12 gauge 28 inch barrel. Use it exclusively for hunting. I’m selling it and getting a Beretta because in the field, the barrel selector gets caught between barrels very easily. Go to shoot a pheasant and you’re stuck between barrels and the safety won’t come off. Just watch that pheasant give me the middle claw as it flies away. Sent it back to Weatherby under warranty and they fixed it and within a month it was back to where it was before. It’s a great gun, but no good for hunting if the barrel selector slips in between barrels.
My son and i both purchased a Weatherby Orion 12 Gauge and both of us are having short strike problems with the top barrel , these guns are cleaned and well kept my son uses winchester shells and I use remington. in one round of skeet Saturday he had three short strikes in 25 and I had three in 10 shell , all top barrel.
I have a pretty new Orion 12-gauge. Bought a case of Browning trap shells and had a lot of miss fired shell's. Sent it in and found nothing wrong. Can't shoot Browning shell's.
Appreciate it bro 👊 I already reviewed the Outlander 12ga. I wish I could get all the different guns in all the different gauges but that is not realistic for now.
I watch just about all of your reviews. Very concise and answers all the pertinent questions. Being a lefty I am always interested in the option of using a right hand gun from the Left. You give LOP and ergonomics, one area I would like to see is the degree of cast , or is it neutral. On auto shotguns, whether the safety is reversible. Keep up the great videos.
I have had my Weatherby Orion 12 g. O/U for just over 6 months. I have put about 1200 rounds through the gun on the trap field. It has performed flawlessly. I adjusted to the weight, trigger pull, and swing quickly. With tax, I paid just under $1,000 for the gun. I am extremely pleased.
I have put a lot of rounds through mine and was always happy until the fore stock cracked all the way through into 2 pieces. I can’t find a replacement anywhere.
@@TargetFocusedLife it’s good to hear! I go to scheels and fleet farm and they don’t have grease on any of the over unders. I wouldn’t buy one from them.
I bought one and after the first round of trap I tried to take it back because of the recoil but no I was stuck with it so I tried to make it my own. The first thing that happened was some galling between the forend and the receiver but strangely only on one side. Fixed it with some sand paper, and greased it up. To fix the recoil I bought a packmire recoil pad and added half an inch of spacer for my 34 inch arms but it was still hitting me so I added almost 2 pounds of weight for a balance point at the breach. Still getting a bruised face so I sanded out a spot for my cheek. Last time out I got two twenty-fives so I'm happy. I'm now confident that I can shoot a couple hundred rounds at competition without flinching from recoil.
Ive had mine since 93 it's got pretty fancy woos its a grade 3 run's great no problems the 4end is not a 2x4 26inch barrel paid less than 800 ya a a silver receiver with birds on it
I just bought mine today. Does anyone feel the barrel selector switch does not have a crisp click when switching from the single dot to the double dot. It kind of just slides back and forth and does not have that crisp click like when switching the safety. Let me know if that's normal for this gun
i actually like the wat it looks nice and clean blued reciver. the only stoping me fron buying it is I dont know about the reliability. How many thousand of rounds it can do before something breaks.
That’s a ATA with a weatherby badge isn’t it we get these in the uk but not like that spec and probably with a lot more options there not a beretta but there not a bad budget guns
I got my Orion and it was amazing I’ve had it for 2 years now and put about 5000 round through it and no malfunctions but I should say I have a sporting one not a hunting and sport but I love it and still shoot is now
