Affordable Walkable Cities: Albany, Troy and Schenectady
We will look at cities that are just plain underrated. We will focus on specific neighborhoods that are walkable and bike-able to services and amenities within a reasonable distance. The 15 minute city in America?
What actually qualifies as Affordable? We will be looking at cities with average rent and median home sale price.
What qualifies as Walkable? The entire city doesn’t have to be walkable since that’s unrealistic but they must have at least several neighborhoods with a good walk, bike and transit score. The goal is to find an area within the city where you can absolutely live car free.
This may not be an affordable walkable city but instead an affordable walkable region;
I am talking about The Capital District of New York that includes the tri city area of Albany, Troy and Schenectady and some folks may throw Saratoga Springs in there as well.
As much as I enjoy exploring the big cities, it’s always nice to visit a smaller, walkable city with a more relaxed pace.

I’m from NYC and I was thinking of moving upstate New York like Albany Schenectady or Troy .. I love the downtown area that’s where I may prefer to live because it’s walking distance from everything.. now I see what all three of these areas are about I am glad I came across this video…Thank you.

I'm a Long Islander who has never been to any of these cities. It's amazing how some of us "downstaters" never go north of Westchester. I'm definitely putting the area on my "to visit list". Great video, thanks!

I never thought about the Albany area. Never would’ve thought about it. I’ve never been, but another dark horse of urbanism you should look at that seems relatively affordable, is Providence RI. I was looking at Zillow and it looked a lot like Boston, but far less expensive (and clearly a lot smaller).

I didn’t think about the area either but it just keeps popping up in the data so I felt like I had to feature it. Providence is on the list!

All of upstate NY is an urbanism dark horse tbh. The vast majority of the towns and cities up there were already settled by the early 1800s, so they tend to be compact and walkable, not to mention full of beautiful historic architecture.

I grew up in the capital region and love it. I’m currently going to Albany law school and it’s really convenient to have the state capital right around the corner. I love the area. It’s big enough that there’s always something to do, but without ever feeling too crowded

If you have some time, could we speak about the school? I have a few questions and speaking to an actual student could help greatly.

I’d be more than happy to! I just finished my first year and I currently have an internship for the summer working as a law clerk until I go back to school for my second year. I’m more than happy to answer whatever questions you might have

I live there as a kid (teens). It was a miserable time in my life, but now 30 years after I left as a young adult, I'm really wanting to go back. Troy was my fav place to live. At the time, a lot of the historic buildings were "damaged" with drop ceilings, covering the gorgeous hardwood floors and frames/windowsills with carpet or paint, etc. Lots of marble fireplaces (most nonworking) were still there. I lived in a refurbished apartment in a gorgeous brownstone with a roommate. We were in heaven - and other than the landlord's unit, ours was the only refurbished one (it was a LOT of work). I remember walking from that brownstone around the corner to get our fav NY pizza... took it entirely for granted at the time.

Thank you for sharing your story. I sometimes dream about living in a historic, charming brownstone that I can slowly bring back to life. I know I’m probably romanticizing it but as I get older it sounds more and more appealing. Cheers! 🍻

This area, the lehigh valley of PA and the northwestern portion of the boston metro area (southern maine & nh over to worcester) should all see large growth in the coming decades

I absolutely agree. Precisely why I made this channel - to highlight these type of areas. I have more videos planned in the areas you described. Cheers!

Yeah this is definitely an underrated area. Outside of Boston, I think it's the best capital district in the northeast and down to the mid-Atlantic as well.

I came away very impressed. Maybe each city isn’t outstanding on its own but the region is pretty outstanding. Sooo many great old buildings begging to be refurbished.

You now have a subscriber from the area. I like living here. The population is big enough to support a decent airport while still being small enough (Smalbany) to run into friends on a walk and not have awful traffic. Albany has a bike plan to add a bunch of bike infrastructure but unfortunately doesn't have the funds to implement it anytime soon. Not mentioned is Amtrak which runs from the East side of the Hudson to NYC on a decent frequency. Another unfortunate bit is population growth is low, so it will be hard to live without a car here for some time until we get better transit. Even bus-timed lights would be adequate.

Hey Andrew - thanks for subscribing. I started to focus only on Albany but realized it would be better to feature the entire region. It’s very unique and simply not recognized enough. Amtrak to NYC is a major perk. I highlighted Buffalo in a previous video as well but I think I would prefer the Capital District over Buffalo.

I was born and raised in Albany. I currently live in Schenectady due to unforseen circumstances. I think all three cities have something to offer. I prefer to live in the town of Colonie which is between Albany and Schenectady because it's just nicer. Colonie is a great area with parks and ponds and wildlife. Hopefully I will find a place to live in Colonie again soon.

Troy is a great place to live car free, I moved here from near Schenectady a little while ago - Schenectady is… meh. It’s supposedly on the up, but they’ve been saying that for years

You should have practiced saying Albany, because you got that wrong. The AL in Albany should be pronounced “ALL” as in all good, not “AL” as in Al Bundy.

Before moving to Albany or Schenectady just check out local crime data. Thank me later. The suburbs in outside of those cities are great. Albany is absolutely dead after 5pm

You need to physically take a tour of the capital district and then you will understand why they are so cheap. Remember also there is a difference between being single vs have a family living in such areas vs living in NYC
