In this episode we explore the coastal community of Struisbaai. They have lived by the sea and off the sea for as long as they can remember. Fishing or as they put it- “saltwater runs through their veins”, but the removal and allocation of fishing rights to small-scale fishers in these communities has been a contentious issue for decades, leaving these communities marginalised. The debate has become one that is a double edged sword between conservation of our ocean resources and the livelihoods of impoverished coastal communities. In this episode we see what true collaboration means. Abalobi have partnered with the traditional line fishers of Struisbaai to ensure sustainable fishing and fair remuneration for their catch. We take a look at how this has changed things in this small fishing community.
