I could listen to this fine lady all day long. Wow, I've learned more about slavery listening to her that I have in all my 63 years.

Love her teaching. Having my grandchildren sit and listen to her. Quiz them afterwards and rewarded them for correct answers.

My family were also Free People of Color from Port Tobacco, Charles County, Mayland from the late 1600s. Although originally a Indentured servant family he was mixed Indigenous Indian and African who married a white Welsh woman in early 1700s. All their children were born free. My family today on average are 59% African, 40% European and 1% Native American... we live in Ohio.

As a Dane with English as her second language, it's a pleasure to listen to this lady. She speaks slowly and distinct - it's very easy to follow for a foreigner. Thank you.

I appreciate this history lesson, as a Great Great Great Granddaughter Of Nat Turner, I have always loved history and found peace in learning more and more about it. This was a beautiful peace continue to be the Storytellers story for us

Dear Madame Yeldell, as a descendant of the Gullah people of South Carolina Sea Islands, I thoroughly enjoyed your and Mr. Drayton's presentation on the history of free Black Americans in the Lowcountry region. I am now subscribed to your channel and will catch up to all the parts of this series. Thank you for this education. I tried to learn as much as I could from my Gullah grandmother before she passed away years ago. Many things she stayed hush-hush about -- she spoke a little about Charleston and Beaufort and a lot less about Whitehall -- but I'm learning more and more, starting with history such as in this video. My Great Great Grandfather came from Sumter, SC and migrated to Texas. He was a freeman lastname Bowen.

My grandfather was never a slave. He was a freedman. His name and family’s name is on the freedmen’s roll. My grandfather’s grandmother was mulatto. Her name was Martha Gantt. She is descended from Peter Gaunt, an English emigrant from Lincolnshire, England.who settled in East Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1630. The surname, “Gantt” was merely Americanized rendering of the British name Gaunt. Eventually the Gaunts acquired estates throughout the South, Alabama,South Carolina and Virginia. The most prosperous plantation and estate was in the town of Gantt Alabama. My grandfather’s name is Robert Hick Gantt. As you said his family the Gantts “Gaunts” gave him land to live on. My Grandfather married my grand mother who was of Cherokee,German , English and African descent. We were always told that our Grandfather was never a slave. Now I know why. Thanks. God bless.

Great video. I am a slave history collector and own at least 15 Freedom Papers and other documents that belonged to Free Blacks during that period. It’s an area of history that needs to be told more!

I did mydoctoral thesis about a family from the ivory coast 🇨🇮, They arrived in Charleston, S.C. and were sold at the slave market which was located and by the way which still is located in a long wooden series of buildings , on market Street, conveniently positioned so that when slave ships would arrive from Africa, The gang plank would come down and they would march the slaves down the street into the long wooden building. A large elevated platform was where the slaves were displayed and auctioned off. These buildings and all of the artifacts are still there on market Street and daily tours are available. From one family came a line of talented men. They took the name of Brown from the owner of a plantation. eventually settled in Augusta, Georgia. The bloodlines were mixed with Apache Indians on the maternal side and a Japanese flower grower on the paternal side. and in 1928 A child was born under the name of Joseph Gardner Junior. Son to Joseph Gardner Senior and Susie Bhillings . For some unknown but urgent reason Joseph Gardner senior deemed it necessary to change his name to protect his safety. (rumored to be a gambling debt) So in 1933 He took his son to the courthouse and announced his birth as being May 1933. He said his sons name would be Joseph James Brown Junior , and his name was Joseph james Brown Senior. Joseph Junior which say in later years he remembered going to a funeral home to see his grandfather in a casket and what he saw was a small Asian man. who's grandfather on his mother side was Indian and this was before the trail of tears when the Apaches were still in the south. James Brown became the most successful black entertainer in the history of show business. Selling an incredible 700 million records and holding the Guinness book of world records for the most live concerts done by any entertainer. he was also the first entertainer of any color to purchase a New Learjet. James Brown amassed a fortune of over $200 million dollars. He received 14 Grammys , 5 American music awards , Lincoln Center honors, A Star on the Hollywood walk of fame. He was made an honorary king in Africa, every dollar that he was paid for performing in Africa was donated right back to the benefit of the people of Africa by way of a hospital ship as well as several hospitals and clinics that he paid 100% for and maintained throughout his life , financially never wanting anyone to know About his generosity to the land of his roots. it is estimated that James Brown benefited the impoverished people of Africa to the tune of $55 million. Every year he ordered 4 747-400 cargo liners from polar air cargo and sent them to different parts of Africa loaded down with over $2 million each in sophisticated medical equipment and surgical equipment. I have many photographs of these aircraft being loaded at JFK airport in New York, he never wanted this to be publicized.

I am quite impressed with this narrative. Should be shown to everyone.

The case on reparations for Foundational Black Americans is astounding and concrete....The American government will never survive in its’ current state without paying what is owed to the descendants of the people who built the country and endured an unfathomable amount of inhumane treatment.

Group control being achieved by "diving them", doesent begin and end with slaves. Politicians and "reporters" still do that today.

Finally,..the unbiased truth. Thank you for this presentation. I have been searching, studying hoping to reach a heritage, or attainable sense of historical significance as a black man. I now know the missing information between the currents bringing Africans to this continent, Columbus naming the black Karibs of the Carribean, Indios. I also have the missing origin of the reclassified, through Walter Pleckers, 'Racial Purity Act',negro from aboriginal to slave, and how so.e of the black Moors ar rd living as slaves from Europe. This benifited them initially, 'The Moorish Sundry Act' was necessary later to keep them from being enslaved, due to their color. Sincerely, thank you.

In all this I learnt our ancestors built America for free. Tragic, tragedy and disheartening. Not a dime given. Even till now they have not given then reparations. I weep!

I just listened to an amazing audio book, Fifty Years in Chains, by Charles Ball. I highly recommend this book. Mr Ball was born a slave in Maryland, he gained his freedom by escaping to Philadelphia. His story is one that should be known.

I'm the descendant of the Green Brown Bradley Graham Singletary & Prince In the Low Country of South Carolina. My great grandfather's mother was a Cherokee Native American. From what I was told, the 2 families were friends and that's how my great grandfather married my great grandmother. My great grandfather was a powerful man here in SC and was o e of the first people to own a car, he also had people working for him. He lost his land that was in Johnsonville SC to a family that now still lives in Timmonsville SC (THEY OWN AN AIRPORT 🤦🏾‍♀️) My family had a RICH background on both sides. In my findings, Mary McLeod Bethune is my distant cousin.

In 1830 my great great great grandfather was born in Georgia the population kept going up and down because the slavery owners was sending slavers back and forth between States to work his land deviding families my great great grandfather was married in South Carolina and was a servant.

Ken Burns has a great documentary call slavery the making of America where he addresses Africans coming from England as indigent servants and how the first African indigent servant was placed into slavery he also mentions his name I can't remember the first name but the last name was Angola which he believes is the country that the African came from. I just learned something. Jewish people participated in the ownership of slaves 😱😭. I thought it was just Western Europeans. Also 1790 was the 1st US Census. 1860.. civil war

I beg to differ about blending in . The servants did not speak the Queen's English. They have rough skin from hard work and wore clothes that distinguished them. They had dispositions that were easy to describe.

My family is from South Carolina my last name is Glymph my great great grandfather was from Glymphville Newberry Pomara area he was forced to leave South Carolina and settled in Arkansas

This my ancestors and im proud. My people been since before 1619 we have indigenous roots she forgot that part many indigenous and indentured africans married too for indigenous peoples were indentured as well

Indentured Servitude was the contract that we, the so-called black people, entered into helping, teaching &c the colonist farm and survive. By the adult life of the third/fourth generation(s), the children being separated from their parents (kin) and raised/educated/indoctrinated &c by the so-called slavers, became less aware (to fully unaware) of the contractual agreements and thier lineage (aboriginal tribal heritage) is when the system of chattel slavery (as we now know and recognize) began.

Dear Lord, I pray you have given every soul that had to endure a life as this, the sweetest time with you afterwards. Every person that has suffered, deserves the highest places in Heaven .. Amen

My third great grandfather had a black mother and a white father. He was born in Abbeville, SC in 1810. He was the first one injured in the Texas Revolution and later married a white woman. Texas made him a free person of color many, many years later but only after he petitioned the court.

This country allowed the Freedman’s bank to be robbed by racist white people and the money of course was never returned.
