When I was in my 20s I use to do that all of the time, I didn't own a engine hoist, now in my fifties I can barely carry a gallon of milk with hurting my back.
My dad told me his drunkard of a friend in the 80s had took a peice of plywood and put it under the car; took out the motor mounts and set it on the plywood; dragged the plywood over under another car; which he had removed it's motor the same way; and put the new motor in.

How did you come up with that ? Regular engine jacks are made in range of 200-450kg, and a tiny 1.3L engine isn't gonna break any jack you hang it on. My guess is somewhere between 80-120kg. Still impressive though.
