The African Charter on Human & People’s Rights provides for the enjoyment of individual rights & freedoms regardless of race, ethnic group, colour, sex, language, religion, political or any other opinion, national and social origin, fortune, birth or other status
The African Charter on Human & People’s Rights was adopted in June 1981 and entered into force in October 1986. The Charter was registered with the United Nations on 10th September 1991.
The African Charter on Human and People’s Rights covers various rights including:
• Rights of individuals to the enjoyment of the rights and freedoms recognised and guaranteed in the Charter without distinction om the basis of race, ethnic group, colour, sex, language, religion, political or any other opinion, national and social origin, fortune, birth or other status
• Equality before the law and equal protection of the law
• Respect for life and the integrity of his person.
• Respect of the dignity inherent in a human being and protection from exploitation and degradation particularly slavery, torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment and treatment
• Right to liberty and to the security of person
• Freedom of conscience, the profession and free practice of religion
• Right to receive information and express and disseminate his opinions within the law.
• Right to free association as provided by the law and not be compelled to join an association.
• Right to freedom of movement and residence in accordance to the law
• Right to seek and obtain asylum in other countries in accordance with the laws of those countries and international conventions
• Prohibition of mass expulsion of non-nationals on the basis of national, racial, ethnic or religious groups
• Right to participate freely in the government of his country
• Every citizen will have the right of equal access to the public service of his country.
• Right to work under equitable and satisfactory conditions, and receive equal pay for equal work.
• Right to education.
• Elimination of every discrimination against women and ensure the protection of the rights of the woman and the child as stipulated in international declarations and conventions.
• Protection of the aged and the disabled
