The African Union Convention on Preventing & Combatting Corruption advocates for mechanisms to prevent, detect, punish & eradicate corruption & related offences in public & private sectors
The Convention was signed in July 2003 and entered into force in August 2006. The Scope of the Convention extends to several key issues including:
• the solicitation / acceptance, or granting directly or indirectly, goods of monetary value, or other benefit, that advantages a person or entity, in exchange for any act or omission in the performance of their public functions
• acts of omission in the discharge of duties by public official or any other person for the purpose of illicitly obtaining benefits for himself or herself or for a third party;
• illicit enrichment
• the use or concealment of proceeds derived from corruption
• participation, collaboration or conspiracy to commit acts of corruption
• Laundering of the Proceeds of Corruption
• Funding of Political Parties
• Preventing and combatting corruption in private sector
The Convention also set the provisions for the establishment of the AU Advisory Board Against Corruption (anticorruption.au.int)
