So this past week I went to GhanaFest 2022 in Chicago, which is probably the closest you can come to being in Africa in America. With a massive market full of African goods, traditional tribal dances, and incredible food from Ghana and West Africa, I made a lot of new friends here when I spoke the Twi language. #ghana #ghanafest #twi

Him(and most people in my opinion) learning a language and actively speaking, or trying to speak it with native speakers also shows a respect for them and their culture, its a beautiful interaction regardless of the language spoken. English, Welsh, French, German, Swahili, Latin, Spanish. I think she was working on Italian. There was a natural progression to most. She was Welsh so English and Welsh were her defacto languages. Latin is sort of the key to the "romance languages" of Spanish, French and Italian. She learnt German so that she could have a crack at Dutch and Old Norse. Nelson Mandela once said, "Because when you speak a language, English, well many people understand you, including Afrikaners, but when you speak Afrikaans, you know you go straight to their hearts.” (many people tend to misquote this, ironically the Mandela effect) Whether people misquote it or not, he's still right and this can be said about any language. It's amazing how much happiness and friendliness occurs when people relate to and understand one another. Not all heroes wear capes, and the ability to converse with a wide variety of native speakers in their native languages is practically a superpower. When people move to another country where their native language isn't the dominant one, it's hard to understand. But when you're constantly expected to assimilate to another country's culture, values, and society, it must be so nice to have someone take that step for you too to better connect with new communities and welcome them with open arms

This was in the 60’s and America ( if you can believe it ) was more racist than it is now. It’s what was called ‘ assimilation’. Adopting the culture of the majority you live in close proximity to. It’s a coping mechanism to avoid racism by pretending to be white Americans. It wasn’t until I was 11 that I learned we were a Puerto Rican. My mother would straighten our hair and warn - if anyone asks you - you say we’re from Spain. Being from Spain is more Old World and prestigious than being Puerto Rican. I know a smattering of words after 3 Spanish classes but still can’t speak to my own people. Make things different for your children.

Yes, a lot of parents in older generations purposefully did this, but not all of them. Although I understand regretting not picking up language if there was a choice, I don't personally like it when people say it in a "my people" context. The truth is that people born in America and grew up in the culture ARE from America. [ ] - American culture is not the same as [ ] culture. Spanish in particular is a good language to learn because there's soooo much content out there due to the shear number of people that speak it. I took Spanish in school but never really learned anything. Yet, using the internet I've been able to get to the point where I can understand quite a bit after only a year or so. I highly recommend watching RU-vidrs that teach Spanish. It works so much better than the classes, and the classes do end up helping to some degree as a starting point due to having some background of grammer etc.. If you truly want to learn I encourage you to not give up. You don't have to be perfect.
