A common misconception is that Ireland doesn't have much black history...WRONG! Ireland has tons of black history! There has been a black presence in Ireland since at least the 1700s, including notable figures such as Tony Small, Rachel Baptiste and Mulatto Jack. Ireland also participated in the transatlantic slave trade, and there were numerous Irishmen in the Royal Africa Company. Several leading abolitionists also visited Ireland, including Frederick Douglas himself! We look at the history and experiences of the Afrodescendant population in Ireland from the 18th century to the modern day. Watch to find out more!

There are a few miss perceptions with who is classified as Irish during the slave trade. The parliament in Ireland was made up of british men who served britain, the Scotch Irish are british colonist sent to ulster to displace the native Irish and help keep Ireland british (they formed the orange order, which in turn formed the kkk). and the majority of people with money were either british landlords or descendants of british landlords and considered themselves separate and above the common Irish people. Outside of Ireland all these groups were just considered Irish. I'm not saying no native Irish person had a hand in the slave trade, but the majority would have been british people labeled as Irish. The nuns however, were bloody evil.

The KKK was actually formed by Democrats in America during the 1800's to attack Black Republicans. Had NOTHING to do with Ireland as there were no blacks here.

Hey!! Just letting u know these “Irish” people mentioned as slave owners were actually loyal Irish (colonisers from britain settled in Ireland). The Gaelic Irish (real Irish) were stripped of everything by the British and would have been far too poor to own slaves. But great video!😊

Thank you Marven! I agree, when we speak about the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Ireland's participation often isn't mention. But there is a lot of evidence to indicate that many Irish individuals and their descendants did profit from the slave trade whether as traders or even as 'slave owners' in the Caribbean. The historian Nini Rogers has written several books on it which I can highly recommend!

The African presentence in Ireland goes back to the Bronze Age. See "Topsail Schooners of the West Country" the need for Cornish Tin to make bronze in west Africa which lasted until World War 1. What happened boats from Africa came up in sight of the Coast of Africa and Europe until they got to Brittany and then crossed hopefully to Cornwall; being out of sight land and using deadreckoning (and pushed perhaps by storms) they same times ended up in Southern Ireland.

You are wrong about slavery. Surname walsh and welsh mean Welshman are are very numerous in Ireland due to coming with the English. The Welshman has always been happy to be part of the English army. The welsh backed Cromwell.
