MUSIC IS MUSIC doesn't matter who or what kind it is. EVERBODY will listen to ALL kinds of music ALL the time & influence each other. Its not black or white-its music. From a hispanic into "punk" music.
i get it now the interview makes alot more sense. jackal from y.d.i one of the hardcore singers and was black. be yourself and come on down and mosh. it's good to hear the black punkers stories in the scene and their history.
Punk DID start in New York with bands like Velvet underground and patti smith, and it spread to England where people were influenced by ska. That's why bands like the sex pistols and the clash are so different from bands like the ramones and new york dolls.
Ok so... my ex and I were suppose to be in this doc....and James flaked on comin' to our city at the last momet... Still bitter about it but I'm happy with the outcome none the less. Great doc. Viva la Black Rock!!!!!
I am quite familiar with that song-in fact I sang it into the microphime with Ian at more than one Minor Threat show. I grew up in the EXACT same atmosphere as Ian MacKaye and my take is different.Racism is a byproduct of power and black people can be prejudiced but racism can only come from those who have a position of power whether that racism be acknowledged or accepted in silence.
yeah,i can totally relate to this guy.it's aggravating to hear people (black and white) say "you want to be white" or "you're black,so your NOT suppose to like punk,rock/alternative rock music" or my favortive "you're SSOO white".hell,i didn't know music had a color, but i didn't let that stop me,from like what i like.
For some reason people keep slamming this, but I feel as if this needed to be done, and am so happy it has been done beacause now I know I am not the only one going through this shit. Music is colorless, but when you stand the only black kid in a predominantly white scene -- predominantly anything other than black, really -- you do start to come across certain situations that make you wonder what it is you're doing. You do go through this kind of racial identity crisis, and you start to ask yourself questions like who am I? Am I really trying to be "white" or anything other than "black"? Am I ashamed of being "black?" Where the fuck do I fit in? And I think fitting in is definitely the worst, especially when you get older and start thinking about all this shit. And these questions start eating you alive. For the longest time I've been wondering if what I am feeling is wrong, and I've felt so alone in thinking this way or feeling the way I do, so knowing that there are other people out there similar to me going through some of the same shit I am going through really amazes me and makes me feel better. Instead of slamming this, we need to reach out to each other and talk about this and try to bridge this gap. I feel like if there were other black people like me we could help each other get through this, because whether we like it or not, afro punk is a subculture within itself, and although its small, its still there. I didn't even know about it until just recently when I started looking up "black scene kids" and stuff like that. Maybe afro punk is where I belong. Too bad its so fucking rare no one knows it exists!
This is cool! I loved the fact growing up that there were other than white kids into wild music. I wish more people would open their minds and listen to stuff that the mainstream doesn't feed everyone.
@DanteWhite There are plenty of black people who are as light as him and are not biracial so he's probably not just has maybe a trace of European ancestry but that doesn't mean he should identify with white people especially when he was raised in a black family with black parents!!
@DanteWhite It's okay hun just call you're self black don't listen to those ignorant people or care about what they will think of you. It's you're choice and they don't have the right to tell you you're not black enough. So who are they to judge!! Of course it's enough it's like when dominican or brazilian people acknowledge their african ancestry! Why not it's their culture too. Italian or Irish americans do it all the time and they barely have any traces of the culture left in their family.
Black people come in variety of colors of the brown spectrum okay. Hell their are some black people who are fully black but like i said because they have a tiny trace of european ancestry they come out looking really light skinned. My cousins are like that, their father's father is Jamaican(Irish) &(black) and they look like my color. Except one is a little bit lighter. But my cousin's son looks fully biracial, he's really light like his grandpa, my uncle! Unpredictable Genes!
Punk started in New York City by a bunch of white art kids. It didn't come from ska at all. At punk clubs in London, Don Letts would spin reggae, dub, and ska records from Jamaica.
@aGwEENapple Exactly and Prince is biracial yet he calls himself both black and biracial!! You don't have to be either or you can be both. Especially if you raised with only one side of you're family, The African American side. The term mulatto was created to distinguish biracial people from black people, and basically tell them their blood was only partially tainted by their African American side. But because their half european their only half special. It's really old school slave mentality!!
What are you talking about? Are you implying that if black's want to belong that they shouldn't listen to rock? Maybe because they are sick of the generalizations and the expectations of being black. Maybe rock music holds a lot more substance than mainstream music including pop and hip hop. These black rockers aren't complaining, they are sharing they're story.
@DanteWhite who are you to say whether or not he's black?? If was raisd by the african american side of his family and he's half white. Then let him all himself black. Actually who knows he might be a third generation biracial meaning his grand parents are mixed or half wife but because of genetics he ended up inheriting more European features. Some times genes skip generations they did in my family. But he's still black his parents are black so who cares!! Mulato is derogatory term okay!!!
That is the ONLY reason,u control anything. Here is sum more insight for u. Just like if there was no Chuck Berry no Lil Richard there would be no punk, in the same way If there were no black people, no ORIGINAL people, there would be no u. So u should listen 2 what I am saying since I am speaking as 1 of ur "elders" Instead of making hurtful&racist comments regarding"who controls everything" seriously think about what ur people have done&continue 2 do 2 gain that control. Then go research Karma.
