It's taken me 3 years and thousands of dollars, but FINALLY, my 1,700 horsepower capable Gen 7 big block chevy is assembled and just about ready to go into a truck. This is a 535 cubic inch 8.8 liter big block based on the 8.1 thats in UglyTruck, and its ready to party. It has a forged crank, rods, and pistons, a solid roller camshaft, ported aluminum heads with massive valves, and now, a pretty trick shaft mount rocker arm setup. We oversized the head studs to half inch to keep the heads secured to the block, we're using copper head gaskets with o-rings, ceramic coated pistons, and a ton more that will hopefully make this engine live at 1,500 to 1,700 horsepower and propel a full sized 4x4 drag truck to an 8 second quarter mile pass!

As a professional engine builder for a living it's not surprising this is the case you had with T&D . Their stuff is usually well built but their lead times are and always have been astronomical and fitment in my experience in the custom side is usually a thing that happens with custom stuff. It happens. but Jesel Is far easier to deal with and usually their lead times are a lot less. Chalk it up to a learning experience. Next time go with Jesel.

I'm happy to see the progress on the 535. It must feel good for you to start inching it along and then really start putting the pedal to the metal, and before long you'll be doing 4-wheeled burn-outs! Can't wait, man. Can't wait.

I have to commend you for your persistence. The issues you covered here today are why 90% of failed builds occur. It can get extremely frustrating when you are trying to do something that is unique, and some people aren't built to overcome these hurdles.

11:41 try Hylomar in a spray can for copper head gaskets. It's self leveling and never actually dries, cleans up with solvent. You can re-use copper head gaskets too, when using hylomar.

Welcome to the world of high end aftermarket parts that don’t fit without custom fitment work. Ray Frank’s Raylar heads are nice and so are T&D rocker arms. I hope the manifold fits on the block without milking the China rails on the front and back of the block. That’s another one that takes people by surprise.
@hughobrien4139
@hughobrien4139 7 месяцев назад
Be thankful you own the parts and can make the moves you deem necessary to get them to fit. I hope your pushrods sweep through their motion without hitting the heads without offset pushrod cups in the lifters and a bunch of work to the heads. I would also suggest that you remove the rocker arms off of the shafts before you do any welding. You can arc the shafts to the stands and have a real good time fixing that. Think it’s a farce….. There’s been several engine lathes that have had their head stock bearings welded together because of welding taking place in the machine and the grounds weren’t as good as the needed to be. You can ground directly to the work and help matters but finding out your ground leads are compromised by welding parts together that you didn’t want welded…. It happens.

I dig the black and aluminum. Just clear coat it.
@hayden6056
@hayden6056 8 месяцев назад
It's hard clear coating raw aluminium without it yellowing and flaking. I've not tried it with a adhesion promoter first but I've had to strip bad clear coat of many aluminium lipped wheels or rocker covers/carb intakes people have cleared. IMHO it's easier to just maintain raw aluminium then remove and re coat every few years.

The nice thing about ugly truck was that it was not a built truck. Now it's not ugly truck. You should have added the AWD front end to it as planned. Now you're totally building a new truck and calling it the ugly truck because you didn't finish it to begin with and you didn't get the results you were hopping for.

And in terms of your awd truck i read one guy got 8L from a LS7@0 deck clearance. That is aluminum and takes the LSA supercharger family. Big block rat COPO2? it would be one of two 8l LS7s on earth.

I noticed that the copper head gaskets didn't have water passages in them. So you are running it as a dry deck set up. I see the large cooland ports on the from of the heads. What is your plans for that? Or do we have to stick around and find out later?
@apw30534
@apw30534 8 месяцев назад
The water passage is at the rear of the gasket. Water in these gen7's flows from the front of the block to the rear of the block then enters the rear of the cylinder head... exiting out the front of the head. Look closely at the gaskets and you will noticed the cutouts at the rear of the gasket. The front stays blocked.

Do a 6.0 the couple extra cubes give a huge advantage. Especially with tq. And they use most the same parts so just as tuneable and workable as a 5.3. Just the 6.0 block is harder to find and a little more expensive

Is there not a risk of warpage when you weld stuff like that? Personally, I would've used hardened washers as shims and then bolted them together. Also, please don't take this as an attack on your welding skills, but, I'd be willing to bet that the original bolt is WAY more rigid than your welds.

Depends on purpose. Technically the 8.1/8.8 is a tug boat and war truck engine. It should be a torque monster. Small blocks don't come close. With water jacket and 18 stud head pattern the gasket holds way better then a 454. If small weight at high speed eg 200mph then this is totally the wrong choice. But in heavy frames truck/muscle cars in the short run1/8 or 1/4mi and such this kills!
