I always figured GLaDOS was just gaslighting her because Chell probably has low self esteem. GLaDOS makes reference to that as well in the first game.

*obsessed with Chell's slow gaze downward when she sees the portrait at* 0:29 Chell looked into the face of a woman she had never seen, at least not in this lifetime. The GLaDOS she carried around in a potato, the GLaDOS who swung menacingly overhead during their battles, the GLaDOS whose piercing voice echoed taunts during countless tests - behind it all, buried somewhere deep down, was just a woman. There wasn't anything particularly special about the lady in the portrait. Perhaps that's what made it all the more tragic. There used to be a woman, but now she was gone. Only a ghost in a machine was left of Caroline, whoever she was. Enough ghosts followed Chell already - ghosts with redacted last names and ghosts who left drawings on walls. Chell's eyes gazed downward, unable to look at the portrait any longer. She had to keep moving.

@@zixea3318 ok i dont want to write a whole essay but here: if we're speaking about caroline being chell's birth mother, the two are literally different races and people often ignore that fact as an excuse to whitewash chell, a brazillian/japanese woman. chell is implied to have been brought to 'bring your daughter to work day', which not only implies that her parents were random scientists at aperture, but also that caroline was likely dead already when she was young/born developers described GLaDOS' relationship with Chell as a 'jealous ex' and the song 'want you gone' as her 'breaking up' with Chell absolutely nothing confirms that Chell and Caroline/GLaDOS are related, its an old and imo very flawed theory also imo i do not like the notion that for GLaDOS to reconnect with her humanity she has to get in touch with her 'motherly' side as women in fiction are always watered down to only their unconditional love for their children. the themes of portal become more powerful and impactful if we view GLaDOS' 'love' for Chell, romantic or platonic, as something born from empathy alone rather than dependant on an already existing relationship. can GLaDOS not be allowed to form a relationship with some random, insignificant human that she doesn't NEED to love but does anyway? sorry that IS a bit of an essay but there you go. neither relationship is necessarily 'canon' but the mother/daughter thing is inherently flawed and is not once referenced in game

I love the inclusion of bodyhair because even though the game models never show it chell was in there a LONG time with no opportunities to shave even if she would have wanted to. Idk if its just an artistic choice or not but its a good touch for how long its been
