Hitachi ended its decades-long excavator agreement with John Deere in 2022, branching out on its own from beneath the shadow of its larger U.S. partner.
So what’s happened since then for the Japan-based company?
On this week’s episode of The Dirt, we find out with guest Patrick Baker, product manager for excavators at Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas.
Baker notes that since the end of the agreement, in which Hitachi manufactured excavators under Deere and Hitachi brands that were sold and distributed by Deere, a whole lot has happened.
“We’re here for the long-term,” he says of HCMA.
Less than two years after the split, Hitachi has launched nearly 20 new products, established a multimillion-dollar Americas headquarters in Georgia and been building a larger dealer network. The new products include 13 dash-7 models of excavators, ranging from 13 to 90 tons; four dash-7 wheel loaders; and compact excavators.
Baker reveals the details of the new excavators, which he says were designed for “productivity, performance, reliability, durability and technology.”
So if you want to learn more about the new Hitachi Americas and its next-generation excavators, check out the latest episode of The Dirt.

Hitachi. Good stuff. Deere must have learned all they needed to know from hitachi. Hmm. I'd rather have the hitachi version with Isuzu than the Deere version. Will be interesting to see how Deere makes it.

Cat failed myserbly at their highway trucks because they rushed into it, didnt create a cat worthy product, instead, they teamed up with international , so vay was selling international trucks with cat stickers, horrible options especially for engines. So kudos to hittachi for not doing the same thing with other lines. Im a cat guy, but i have a 350 LC-5, been a great machine. But i could not believe that cat decided to sell international trucks to their cat customers. Dumbest idea ever in this industry. Hitachi should add to their lines when hitachi can make it themselfves. Otherwise it may ruin them.

There's more equipment made by different (read competitor) manufacturers than most people realize. Hitachi wheel loaders are in fact Kawasakis. Deere artic trucks are made by Bell. Deeres crawler loaders and older hydrostatic dozers were made by Liebherr. Case and Link-Belt excavators are made by Summitomo of Japan. Small compact excavators are absolutely convoluted as to who makes what for whom.

Deere has done a great job of dragging down the brand of hitachi with poor quality excavators. Most people now just say " its the same machine " No, the hitachi will not be an absolute garbage rattle trap at 3000 hours like a deere will.

Im surprised he didnt mention that Hitachi is bringing back ridgid truck manufacturing to North America. They are returning to building them back at Guelph, Ontario! Im also suprized they got out of selling articulated trucks. They go hand in hand with excavators yet they stopped selling a Hitachi articulated truck many years ago, that was a very strange marketing strategie.

Hitachi took away the line from a great local dealership and gave it to a new company. Their new location is terrible and they have no relationships. Nobody wants Hitachi in our area anymore. Great Move Hitachi!!!

Never mind the core values BS. Id like to see corporate reduced in personnel and their pay checks so the customers can be offered an excellent machine at rock bottom prices to compete with manufacturers such as Sany. Also be nice to go back to old school basics without the computer crap which would simplify service and repair for the owners.

Let’s be honest, all these small comforts in the cab really do nothing. Bobcat, after Doosan purchased them, has been changing and the unit sales have tanked. An 8” LCD anti-glare screen? Who cares? It’s just something more to break or go wrong. To be honest, who looks at the screen? The excavator is made to dig, that’s it..give it enough time, Hitachi sales will fall, just like Doosan.
