In this episode of The Dirt, host Bryan Furnace tries out Hilti’s new EXO-S Shoulder Exoskeleton, designed to ease the load on workers operating tools overhead. Hilti first introduced the EXO-1 exoskeleton product in 2021 for construction workers in a partnership with Ottobock, a prosthetics, orthotics and exoskeleton manufacturer. It’s new product, the EXO-S, is designed to reduce the strain on neck and shoulders when working with your arms above shoulder level. Strain normally felt in the shoulders and neck is transferred to the hips, according to Hilti.
Hilti dispels the notion that the device will give you more strength. It is a “passive exoskeleton” with no battery power or other outside powered assistance. It’s a wearable brace with a backpack design for keeping your body in alignment.
Hilti cites the following uses for the EXO-S:
Continuous or repetitive overhead tasks, with or without using tools.
Installing drywall - fastening track to ceilings and walls, taping, hanging and screwing board.
Surface grinding and sanding - finishing on walls/ceilings.
Overhead installation - piping, sprinklers, air ducts, conduits, cable trays and channels.
Comment from Hilti: The EXO-S Shoulder exoskeleton is a passive exoskeleton. It is designed to relieve the strain on the arms and pectoral girdle during overhead and over-shoulder work. Assistance is correct when gravity is enough to make your arms drop, without further exertion on your part. Do not attempt to set assistance to a value higher than this; any lower setting is possible, in accordance with your preference.
To see what it’s like wearing the EXO-S and to get Bryan’s take on the device, check out the latest episode of The Dirt.

Never heard anyone complain that equipment was too adjustable and adaptive to size….

As an arborist this thing is so lightweight for donning and doffing. Those adjustments look great to me
@tylernorman2329

Also, if he reread the manual, he would see that the book says to set its strength to a level where your arms fall to the side by body weight alone. He cranked this thing too high to make a problem from nothing.

Totally agree. Why complain about that. Shows a lack of informed reviewing

This exo was built for "overhead work"... (people shooting tracks, drilling holes, holding a camera in docks for a long period of time, etc.) So reviewing it from a "hands down" stand point is kinda weird. Like "This car is shit! It doesn't even mow the lawn"! Duh!!!! 🤦‍♂️

I’ve gotten the use a demo unit from our local Hilti dealer for couple days. I’ve had 4 shoulder surgeries and I’m missing 2 rotator cuffs on my right should. This was a huge game changer for me worked 8 hr doing over head work with no problems. Without it I couldn’t hold my arms up for more that 1-2 minutes before fatigue sets in.

Looks like you are using it wrong. The tension in the system should allow for your arms to fall with gravity. Exo is ment to assist your arms - not carry the load.

I would love to try one since Ive lost 95% of overhead strength in my dominant arm due to injury and multiple surgeries

The ExoActive exoskeleton from Festool is an "active" suit that adjusts to where you are trying to put your arms and not fight you. I haven't tried it, and it's probably a lot more expensive given the Festool name.

Excellent points. Hopefully they design some sort of cam into the system that relieves the assist incrementally the more you lower your arms. Or have a button that would turn off the assist when it isn’t needed
@wheelie._.

The assist is adjustable. I work in one all day everyday. For my job I have turned down almost all the way

Duh, this is a tool that is made for overhead applications, if you are doing something where your arms are down you wouldn't need it! The adjustments are not hard to do at all and well you want it to fit you. You wouldn't use a drill if you needed a saw.

I was hoping this was a powered suit that assisted movement strength and not just a support sling.
@beiraodoaloucura9295
@beiraodoaloucura9295 6 месяцев назад
It is useful for reducing damage to the shoulders and elbows. It doesn't give extra strength. But think of a house painter with years of painting ceilings, the shoulders are damaged before retirement, for this guy this thing will be a blessing

We are pretty far away from affordable "powered" suits of any kind lol but we may see a few more of these ergonomic mechanics based exosuit designs that help distribute weight and what not

Dude, if you arent using your arms overhead all day its not for you. Why would you ding it for not using it. Thats like complaining about drills like "this drill works great a lot of the time, but sometimes i just want it to drill without pulling the trigger, so it falls flat for me"
