An arrogant high school senior, Micah Price, used his high school graduation to turn a celebration of his classmates’ achievements into a personal platform to convert people to Christianity.
Officials at Campbell County High School, eager to avoid any lawsuits, are now insisting this happened without their knowledge.
This is a clip from my recent livestream:

This is a 17 or 18 yr old student. He is not a teacher and this is not a classroom. I, as an atheist & former teacher, think the valedictorian & salutatorian should be able to say whatever the f*ck they want in their 5 minute speech. They have earned it. The valedictorian speech _is_ (and _should be_ ) about that particular student. It's their moment. No, it doesn't have to be about the rest of the students. It doesn't have to cater to the entire audience's sensitivity about religion. It absolutely can be about his personal beliefs. Heck, it could be about his favorite movie or song lyrics, or First Keg Party story, I don't care. None of us should care. The students won't remember. And the administration is not showing any respect for their top students when they demand to pre-approve their speech, in order to CYA for the Karens. By the way... this is not an unusual/isolated thing. Just went to my nephew's graduation from a public HS in FL. The salutatorian had a lot to say about Jesus and at least half the class and 1/3 of the spectators were clapping and cheering at her applause break moments. I don't have a problem with this, since it's at the point when all the students are going off to live their lives. Very different from trying to teach intelligent design in science class or a coach holding "optional" prayers on the 50 yard line. I feel like the whole story was sensationalized by the media and that's why people overreacted. We really have bigger problems to focus on & I wish the media would be more responsible.

A non-Christian wouldn't have even been allowed to give a personal thanks to their deity like he was allowed. Or if they were they'd have been boo'd off the stage in seconds. The part that's dangerous is these kinds of people GENUINELY believe they ARE the oppressed minority and that they are so SO the one true faith that they HAVE to force everyone to convert "for their own good" and sadly from what I've seen these types don't tend to change unless it blows up in their face somehow, and even then most will double down and use it to 'confirm' their horrid beliefs... he genuinely thinks that even though he knowingly broke the rules that he knows would not be upheld equally in the first place, that he was morally right in doing so and making his non-Christian classmates feel unwelcome...

As KY voter, thank you for recognizing that the problem is largely rural. The democrats always take Lexington and Louisville. Also, fun fact, we've actually had a lot of democratic governors in the history of the state, but for some reason everything else gets taken by the republicans. I will say, if you support coal (or say you do), you will absolutely take everything east of Lexington. That said, we're trying. The democratic party has consistently run the most lukewarm candidates for senate and the house. Maybe we can at least get rid of Andy Barr this November? Although he's not even the worst we've sent to Washington by a long shot

To answer the question posed by the title, did he meet the requirements for graduation? Then yes. Period. And unless you can point to some provision about "not embarrassing administrators," no penalty, not even "a talking to," is justified. They should have just issued a statement saying the text was unapproved and otherwise taken the L. Noting first that all your references to "arrogance" and rudeness and the like are not drawn from anything he said but from your projections onto him, I would point to the fact that at the graduation ceremony of the Idaho Fine Arts Academy on May 23, graduating student Annabelle Jenkins protested the removal of books from the school library by refusing to shake the principal's hand, instead offering him a copy of one of them and dropping it at his feet when he refused to take it. I haven't seen any reports of penalties, but the school district slammed the protest, saying it “overshadowed the celebratory occasion,” essentially echoing the complaints you made about the subject of this video. Was she rude, arrogant? Should she be punished, at least "given a talking to?" If not, why not? And no, the defense that it wasn't in front of the whole school is unavailing: She showed the book to the audience before offering it to the principal and had a TikTok of it, which she obviously had to have prearranged. Meanwhile, students have been suspended or denied diplomas for taking part in nonviolent protests again the genocide in Gaza. Was that okay? I mean, they did more than maybe embarrass administrators, they "disrupted" the campus or "the educational process," which translates to "they irritated the administration." Or is protest or civil disobedience only acceptable when it is invisible or can be easily ignored? *Edited with footnote:* I'm far less disturbed with what he said than the cheering response of the audience.

You cannot get into college, trade school, etc. You will have a lot of problems getting a job. Did he say something he should not have in the wrong place at the wrong time? Yes it was not the place and the school should talk future speakers to discourage this in this happening again. I do not, however, wish a lifetime of poverty and life challenges on this kid just because he said something stupid in high school. Kids say stupid things and learn so let the kid learn but do not punish him the rest of his life.

I attended a chorus concert in the winter for the local public elementary school. It was, for some reason, held at a church. The show was introduced by the pastor of the church, during which he encouraged everyone to attend the church, announced the church's event schedule, and told us "Jesus is the reason for the season" and various other Christian platitudes. This was in NC. I am wondering if this violates any laws, or if the rules are different due to it being held at a church instead of on school grounds. Does anyone know the answer to this? It was the offical concert, and there were no others that parents could attend except this one.

The case you describe sounds like a very clear violation to me. I recommend that you contact FFRF and advise them of this matter. @@xmillion1704 In this case this young man is very clearly making a show of his piety/"righteousness", like the hypocrite standing on the street corner. That's covered in Matthew 6:5. @xmillion1704
@xmillion1704 Месяц назад
@@granvillesimmons6033 I guess what I need from you then is what you cite as the source of your authority to apply the very plain text specifically proscribing public acts of prayer, to this case where he is engaging in what can best be described as "spreading the gospel", which is widely prescribed. I agree that, to me, proselytization comes off as arrogantly impious. That precise behavior is, however, exactly what christians are commanded to do in the bible. The following books have multiple texts that mandate spreading the "truth of god" either explicitly or metaphorically; Matthew, Mark, Acts, Romans, Timothy, Peter, Ephesians, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Colossians, Luke, John, Philippians.
@granvillesimmons6033
@granvillesimmons6033 Месяц назад
@@xmillion1704 First off, let me make it clear that we agree that we are called to "spread the Good News", but there are appropriate places for that. That's what we have things called churches for. When someone (like a street preacher) goes out in public, on the (literal) street corner, we are also called to question that person's motives. Are they doing it to purely spread the Gospels, or are they doing it to make a big show of their piety (which Christ forbids)? Well, we know for certain if they are standing around judging others (and by implication saying that they themselves are "holier" than the people they are preaching to) then it's easier to clearly see. This young man, I will admit, is a murkier situation, but I believe he falls into this category because his remarks were totally unnecessary and inappropriate to that specific situation. Following the rules of his school would not have infringed on his religious liberty in any way. So, yes, I believe Matthew 6:5 covers this.

@@granvillesimmons6033 Well, I'm going to have to break up my more lengthy response and post it in sections to see if I can determine which contains the otherwise innocuous *reference that this social media platform deems worthy of censorship, so here goes. (*Edit: So evidently it was strictly it's length which caused this platform to repeatedly censor my original post [shrug]) Part 1 Preaching in churches is definitely not an effective way to spread the gospel to those who do not already believe. The only caveat being if your church lures unsuspecting folks in under false pretenses, of course. jk lol Apocalyptic itinerants, one or more of whom likely represented the archetype upon which the gospel authors based their portrayal of Christ, only found their audiences out in public. The only three times that Jesus was depicted as visiting a temple was once as a child, teaching the rabbis, once during his ministry when he "taught" and once as a rampaging vigilante.

Just because he turns out to be an high school graduate who is also just a a first class jerk, doesn’t change the fact that he still earned his diploma fair and square. Flip it around - if a student’s parents enroll him in a Catholic high school, and a student earns his/her high school diploma but the school requires all students to be baptized and confirmed as Catholics, should he/she be denied a diploma after legitimately earning it? No. It would be just like an employee on the job trying to proselytize his co-worker - can he be legally denied his pay? No. Can he be fired for such evangelism? I don’t know. I think a better response by the school would have been to have the student publish a publick apology in the local paper.
