A Kansas pastor’s plan to disrupt a library’s celebration of Pride month by having his congregation check out all the LGBTQ-themed books has, predictably, backfired.
The pastor doesn't think it was a failure. He spoke to me about why he did it.
This is a clip from my recent livestream:

Damage? How so? They're trying to defend their community from the filth. Decent people would appreciate their intentions, however much they might question their tactics. More so, because today's culture is SO toxic...People who are heartbroken over what has been done to our culture are the NORM....I just wish that everyone who agreed with us would have had the guts to have stood up back when there was still something to be GAINED...It's largely over, now. Even FOX news inundates us with queers around the clock...

@@tgriffin3059 Like when Christian parents would force their kids into camps? No really, they'd pay priests and councillors to come in at the dead of night to kidnap their own children to force them into camps. Then wondered why so many of the kids would log themselves out permanently. Then when those camps got shut down for human rights violations, the owners would be slapped on the wrist and start up a new one with the exact same name and those so-called "loving" parents would again pay to have their children kidnapped.

The funny thing is that when you check out a book, it helps the author and gets the book promoted because many libraries are on a inter-lending library system now so the whole system will aquire more books to lend. Lmao

The pastor at one of our local churches pulled a similar stunt once. He and his cronies, all checked out everything they considered to be porn. They hit the library, and the video rental store. Then they put it all in a big pile and burned it up. On public property. The church ended up paying the replacement cost of everything they burned, they got fined for unauthorized burning, plus the video rental store pressed theft charges creating yet another fine. It was delicious getting to see all the names and charges listed in the paper

Transitions: A Mother's Journey is a graphic novel about a mom learning to accept her trans son. I read it a while back. Its pretty good. I don't know about this Kansas library but in my library it is in the adult graphic novel section. There is a separate teen graphic novel section in my library with books more geared towards young people. I don't think this book is especially explicit but even if it was its not in the teen section. When I was in High School, my school library had the Invincible graphic novel series. I read the series multiple times as a teen (this was well before the show came out). Its a series about superheroes thats known for being very gory and violent. It even has some sex. But because all the sex is heterosexual, no one is making a big fuss about teens reading that book. Its crazy that as a teen I could read about superheroes disembowling each other but people are up in arms about gay characters kissing or trans characters existing.

I'm Australian and an author. I wrote a YA novel about a teenage boy starting to deal with being sexually abused in his younger years. One of the reasons I wrote it was to give kids in that situation the encouragement to pursue recovery. When I saw all the book banning happening in the US I was horrified. So I got some of them to see what the fuss was about. I read Gender Queer and Flamer, both graphic novels. They were excellent and I have no doubt that both will save a life somewhere down the track. The publisher of my YA novel has a similar book from many years ago called "F2M - The Boy Within". It's based on the experience of the author starting to transition as a teenager. It's from 2010 and even back then it was inspirational.

I'm ace but some of my favorite books are LGBT+ romance novels because it's fun to read about different perspectives and different experiences from my own. Also I work in a library and I've seen the types of LGBT+ affirming books we have in our kids section. The message of the majority of them can be summed up as LGBT+ people exist and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm trans. When I was a child I knew I was a girl. But this wasn't talked about. I thought I was broken, a cosmic mistake, the only person like this in the world. Books like these, if they had been available when I was growing up, would have saved me so much pain over my life. I've struggled with depression ever since I realized my body wouldn't develop the way I wanted it to. But it could have. If I were growing up today, I could have learned I wasn't alone, there are lots of people like me, and options like puberty blockers and HRT exist. But instead, I went through the wrong puberty, which hit me pretty hard. Because of that, I didn't think I could transition. I thought I'd look horrible, I'd never be accepted. So I didn't, and I spiraled into a worse and worse depression until it got to the point where I either had to be my authentic self, or I wouldn't survive. Last year, at 43, I started transitioning, and sure, I'm obviously trans, but I'm mostly accepted for who I am. I'm happy now, but that's still 30+ years of unnecessary suffering. These bigots want more children to be like I was, thinking I'm alone, thinking it's hopeless, unaware that there are options out there to help. Although as bad as it was for me, it's probably worse for trans kids today. I didn't know there were options. Many of them do, there are hateful people out there preventing them from accessing these options. As bad as it is not knowing, I can't imagine how much worse it would be to know and be forbidden from trying to be you.

As a 22 year old trans woman, I dont think its 'worse' per say but I think it is more mentally taxing. Haven't started transition yet and when I first found out from some other trans people I felt really alone with my irl and honestly most of my online friend groups. And it doesnt help I didnt really feel like I could talk or be respected jsut because of at the time I came out (At like, 15 or 16) to them, it was mostly met with dismissal and idea of me just giving into teenage fantasy and trying to talk about the complicated situation I found myself in with some of them was not an option because they just didnt understand that in the current understanding of my situation I couldnt really do much. I wish I'd opened up to my parents about it sooner because we probably would've gone on to help and go through a process. Up until then before I met those people and realized being trans was an option I did feel like a mistake or just...very othered. I didnt like all the things guys liked, and I didnt like all the things girls liked, but knew I kinda felt like I was in the wrong body. And if I had access to that these people even existed it would've been REALLY helpful like you said. The mentally taxing part comes from knowing there are options and things to support, but them starting to feel really hard to get to or out of reach. Or just like you'd never really pass in your friend group. I noticed it became a lot harder and arguably still is to live life knowing that being 'yourself' would just gather ire from people around you for no other reason than being different.

This isn’t the early to mid 90’s when the library was where you went to get books and information. They still hold lots of information and are a resource, but they aren’t the only resource as it was in some cases back then. That was when I needed and checked out the lgbt books that I could find there. It was very helpful in coming out. Kids do still have the libraries to go to, and maybe it’s safer if the home is not a safe place, at least there’s fast internet now too.

I saw a story similar A small local library that had only around a thousand books iirc had 3 women do the same thing here. They checked out all books in the pride display and "refused to return them unless the library never put 'the gay agenda' in the library again" or smthn like that. Basically you can't have it unless you promise to never use it. A GoFundMe raised like 20k for the library and the ladies has to pay 5k in late fees each iirc so their stunt lost them 15k and gained the library 35k

Im just laughing cause it will not stop anybody. My daughter had several "high level " books taken from her when she was small about 4th grade. I just went and got them then asked the teacher " where in the heck you think she got them?" We are a family of readers. When they developed and were reading other novels and YA books you know what they asked me to read some of the same books. Which I happily did we had some good conversations about what was coverd and how it was coverd and yes some LGBTQ+ themes. It helped her know how I felt on a subject without her having to come out til she was ready. And no the books didnt make her gay they helped her see she wasnt alone.
