Asked a friend visiting Japan to try and bring me back a vintage walkman. Gave him $100 for it, told him if it was more, I'd give him more. He brought me back THREE. Apparently they're super common.
For the fluff, try taking some isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip and rub the tape head down a little bit to remove any magnetic annoyance. When I buy gummed up tape players it always works.
Also, he might have to mess with the head alignment aka azimuth. Could also just be bad tapes that have lost their high frequencies, which is quite common with old tapes.
Yes! Cleaning the tape haeds can do wonders sometimes! Often you don't even See any dort because it's so little - still it can have an impact. Also think about the pressure pars in the cassette. These can also deteriorate or someone may habe bent it down towards the inner of the cassette. This could affect the tape-to-head contact
Sadly the 1st walkman wasn't designed to be mindblowing. Small history lesson, the 1st walkman was unamed hence why its known as the "TPS-L2" as they were expecting the product to totally flop. So they rehoused a "tape counter/ pressman" and removed its record function then threw it into the world Only in 1981 when the 1st Walkman to get the Wakman name the "Walkman WM-2" did sony make a machine from the ground up for audio listening and it was a huge leap. In quality, size and parts
I love how people really kinda rediscover the magic of an actual audio cassette. Including me. I recently got myself a walkman from the late 80‘s and it‘s just amazing. Can‘t go anywhere anymore without it in my pocket
@@pugg5ter542 yeah I‘m totally fr. I put my own music on the cassettes and always take the walkman and a few cassettes with me. Listen to them on the train omw to school yk I love this retro thing
Ive owned a Walkman for about four years now, and have been carrying it to work with me for one and a half. Its honestly my favorite way to experience music.
1: if they werent already these players are like 45 years old now, put a new belt in it or it will sound like crap 2: the sound quality is probably because the pinch rollers are ran-through and need serious cleaning or replacement, and i noticed on mine its developed serious capacitor problems. worth replacing those close-to 50 year old bad boys. also clean the volume sliders, one of the first things i did on mind and it did improve it quite a bit PS clean the tape head, its crazy how dirty they get and how much it affects sound quality, just a q-tip and ISP alcohol will do wonders and on an unrelated note if you want the best, most over-engineered walkman around, get a wm-7, its sound quality is amazing, its the first auto reverse player, first with logic controls, and holds up really well compared to a full-fledged cassette deck (its also really slept on, prices arent too crazy for them yet)
the thing about cassettes and vhs, is due to their composition, the tapes will gradually decrage, sometimes faster under humid conditions. i remember an anedoctal story about how the original master copies of the Macross/Robotech series was nearly destroyed due to a flood
lol no just no cassettes and vhs is shit Cds/bluray is better discs are just better when it comes to music and movies cuz its digital digital sounds better and more eaiser
@@Judyhopps-1iq no one tell bro optical discs rot to hell with time and SSDs die if you don't play with them every few months lol. Funnily enough one of the preferred formats for mass (and I mean MASS) storage in companies that need stuff to stay stored for long are, still, tapes, way more data dense and larger but still tapes lol
Got do I love these old Walkmans. I have a WM-3 from '81 that I mostly take to college and when I go out and about. Most people like it and find it interesting to see a 19 year old with something this old
Good call. It's particularly ironic that he used the SR60s, known for very accentuated treble. That Walkman has no support for Type IV tapes, no noise reduction, and not the most up-to-date circuitry, which all makes for lots of hiss. Then again, it somewhat mitigates the typical tape problem of muffled sound (which he mentions) due to azimuth misalignment.
I honestly love Frank. And that green iPad 4 made me go on Amazon and buy one. I works great. You are right though, it is preeeety slow. Especially since it came with iOS 10. Only $100 USD though, so that's not bad. Oh yeah, and the dingusPod (the gold one) inspired me to pick one up brand new not a month before the iPod was discontinued entirely. I may not be a patron but I am CERTAINLY a fan.
EYO, got any news for the walkmans? New vibes or still woofy? EDIT: the ELO cassette looks like Chrome tape, be sure you have the set for chrome tape, it changed quite a bit how you hear it! it's quite a good gap of quality no joke
"Made in Japan, that's rare these days." Reminds me of how literally any "British" electronics company now plasters "designed in the UK" everywhere because yes, that is true, but they're still made in China and Bangladesh.
Perfect Video Mate. Like Yup. Sony Walkman Cassette Tapes Can Still Work As A Bomb If The Batteries Agree To Trust The Walkman Itself. Before I Buy Something In Mint Or Used Condition From The Past…I Make Sure It Still Works And I Look It Up The Specs And Reviews. If It’s In A Local Store, I Speak To The Seller To See The Same Reason Or Just Test It Before Buying. But You DankPods Are An Expert Of All Electronics. I Will Be Sure To Give You So Many Likes To Your Channel. 👍👍👍
What really is funny about the TPS-L2, you can get two Sony WM D6C for the same price and the D6C not only records, it will blow away almost any other walkman ever made. Locked disk drive capstan servo, amazing head and amplifier circuit, got dolby B,C and can record to ferric, chrome and metal tapes. I´ve got an D6C serviced for myself and this machine is crazy like almost like playing a CD. The TPS-L2 is more a mediocre tape player. Super bareones and doesn´t have Dolby decoding or a tape selector switch to provide the correct tuning (Equalization). Don´t know why people are so after it.
So……my recommended has been filled with these after shows ever since you uploaded them…..and I couldn’t be happier that I have so much DankPods that could last me at most a year if I dripfead myself these videos
Dudeee, I would fucking LOVE that feature at 2:26, being able to adjust the volume of each ear, mainly because I hear less in my left ear and its so annoying to listen to music since I have to constantly adjust my headphones because they dont sound equal 😭🙏🏻
Wanted one too because i use cassette tapes but think they went up in price because they look A LOT and possibly the same model as the one Chris Pratt uses in Guardians of the Galaxy so might have raised the prices
I just got a nock off Walkman with slipknot cassettes for my birthday i love it now im gonna start saving my money to get a real Walkman hopefully ill get one before Christmas
Dang, disappointed you didn't at least clean the thing with a q-tip and alcohol before assessing the audio quality...may have decades of grime holding it back!
As somebody who was paid to work on somebody's project car..... Yeah it's nice not to have something that's messed with because I know absolutely nothing about cars well I know the important stuff how to change a tire basic faults etc. classic cars absolutely nothing although I don't know about how a distributor works. But this guy had opinions that and changed priorities that then changed. Things that he wanted done a certain way even though that's the wrong way to do them. Like doing construction on the building in reverse order. Hiring somebody to do computers and audio video for events and then bringing them in to help put in a two-story addition ( actually know about construction although it's been a while so I forgotten more than what I felt like the people I was working with knew ). Where was I, I don't know.
Walkmans are garbage analog trash!! Discmens are better digital is better i like digtal more compact discs wins for me i hate the sound of tapes there trash
