After This Kmart Closes, Only Three Will Remain

It’s the end of the road for this Kmart store in New Jersey that will close permanently. Afterward, only three will remain in the United States. Everything is up for grabs for a reduced price - even the mannequins, cash machines and exit signs. Kmart once employed over 300,000 people in its 2,440 stores. Then mismanagement, falling sales, changes in shopping habits, and stores like Walmart and Target were too much to handle. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

25 years ago Kmart was the place to be. I loved it as a kid. 10 years ago a Kmart was a sad place to be. They were all run down and messy, never stocked. Now it’s the end of the road. This reminds me of the Sears. Same story.

One of the last three exist in my childhood shopping center in the Bronx, NY. I recently went back in on a random visit to the area and it was pretty creepy to say the least. What used to be a bustling shopping store is now an empty half filled mega store that had half its store with the lights off and sectioned off, while still stuck in the 90's. The advertising photos near the ceilings still in place from when I was a child. It was insane when compared to how busy and lively it was back then. Pretty sad but this is also the same thing that has happened for years. Business come and go, people just remain nostalgic for days gone by. Australia still has kmarts if that's anything.

Kmart had this special thing called " layaway". That's where most of my Christmas as a child came from along with clothes and shoes throughout the year. My local Kmart had a photography department and a food court. It was all amazing. It shut down years ago. But I'll always have those memories shopping at Kmart with Nana. It's ironic because she died 2 weeks ago. Watching this video sure brings back a lot of memories. I love you Nana.

When I was born, my mom was working at Kmart. Their health insurance was really good back then. They covered the costs of my birth by 100% from the hospital. I still remember our old regular Kmart we had. And even our short lived Super Kmart that replaced it. Unfortunately it didn't last long though, as Kmart started the process of going into bankruptcy back then. After the Sears/Kmart merger happened, that process went into over drive. The merger happened in November of 2004. It's crazy to think that Kmart store's have been steadily closing for 20 year's now. 😕

This was my favorite store growing up, it was the first place I applied to when I turned 16. Worked there for 2 years and loved it! Kmart will always hold a special place in my heart. How the mighty do fall and in such a short time. When I worked there from 2012-2014 the store was always busy, I was so upset when ours shut down a few years ago. Sears took Kmart with it.. rip❤️ My favorite memory: Being 13 and loitering with friends at Kmart. We would get a little ceasers pizza and go to the furniture displays and eat like we were in a house, for some reason they never kicked us out for that. We weren't loud, just being silly and I guess they were okay with it lol. We did it for years. Now grabbing the bikes and riding them around in the store after eating little ceasers on their dining table furniture display? THAT will get you kicked out😂

It was a great store for the region, fully packed, lots of items & a pretty good customer base for the area. I then visited in 1987 & wanted to visit the store again; what an utter disappointment to what they did to the store. Not much inventory screwed up the aisles, looks like it was mismanaged. My granddad refused to go in due to how it was ruined. A few years ago, found out it was sold to another department store company & ran it into the ground in 1986. He has accelerated the failure of this company refused to invest in stores, strip n sold off valuable assets and stop investing in employees and wanted to push Shop your way online to compete with Amazon. It failed dismally. All he cared about was using Kmart and Sears stores as a real estate playground that’s why he didn’t update the stores because there was no intention of keeping them open. The sad catastrophic failure of this company was no accident it was made by design. As a 90s kid, Kmart will always be a happy part of my childhood. I remember a place bustling with customers, all the registers were open, it was filled to the brim with toys that I would've easily spent the entire day enjoying and dreaming and they always went all out on decorating for Christmas. Ah memories..

In the 1970's and the 1980's, Kmart was the place to shop. They had everything a family could want to buy. If you wanted a nice bicycle, they had it. They had cameras, lawn mowers, you name it. When the 1990's arrived, some of the good merchandise were no longer available. The management during the year 2000 and on never kept the shelves full of the items most families were seeking to buy. The decline was a direct result of poor management.
@jackson5116
@jackson5116 2 года назад
They began to decline in sales in the mid-80's when Antonini took over. He tried to stop it by diversifying the company, and renovating/relocating them with that new logo- the whole "Kmart has changed" promotion you can find on youtube. The problem is, it cost a massive fortune to do that, and when they had a bad year in 1993, nearly went bankrupt, ousted Antonini, got Floyd Hall to take over to save them, and he had to change even more to that new Big Kmart era, then retired with Kmart fully profitable and growing again. Conaway took over, undid a lot of what Hall did to save them, and they went bankrupt, never to be as big as they were in 2000 when they had their highest discount sales, and more sales per square foot.

I remember the days when I was a small child going to Kmart with my mom. Back when the food court was open and they sold Little Ceasars pizza. It was expensive, even for those times, but good. We just had one close where I'm at like 2 years ago. When it was still open, it was like walking back to the 90s because that's really how it looked. Old computers running the register, the inside pretty much in need of updating, and the vast majority of shoppers were the elderly. It is sad to see them go, but that's possibly how they got out of business. They didn't keep up with the times and they got phased out.

Houston area, here. Our Kmart stores closed up way back in 2003 and the two I lived close to have been repurposed. One of them was original and the other one was a Venture store. When Kmart acquired many of Venture's stores in 1997 when they were going out of business, it resulted in the original one moving up the street into the newly acquired Venture store. It was strange that they plumped for such a store as they were smaller and lacked the garden and auto departments. The original Kmart store then became a flea market in 2002 and the Venture Kmart closed up in 2003 along with the rest of the chain in the area. That store became a Burlington, which remained for many years until recently and is now a building for the school district and the original Kmart that became a flea market recently became split between a gym and O'Reilly's auto parts store.

It was sad to see the Kmart in my hometown go down hill after being the place many people in my area, including my family and I would go shopping for stuff. I guess one the first clues it was going down hill was the fact they weren't selling Pokémon cards anymore, cause apparently people kept stealing them. Now it's completely closed, which is sad and strangely a relief. Upside though, is that my town still has some grocery stores and small businesses that sell some of the stuff we need or want, like Pokémon cards. But now we got to drive an hour more to the nearest Walmart. LOL Rural life in a nutshell

I grew up with a Kmart in my hometown and have fond memories of the place when I was a kid and teenager. I was there on one of the last days before closing back in early January of 2020 it was a surreal experience. I remember playing a GameCube game demo, messing around with merchandise as a teen, and even going on a date with my then girlfriend at the time. It was a mix of nostalgia and bittersweetness knowing it was the last time in and out of the store to buy something. I looked back at the store as my mom drove her car until I couldn’t see it anymore all that is left is an empty vacant lot.
