when i was 8 i realised that if i went to heaven i would live there forever, suddenly i realised what forever is, i felt that if i were to be there for eternity and it never ended it would be horrible, its at that age that i developed an irrational fear of dying just because i was terrified of any kind of eternal afterlife, be it heaven of hell

I think the afterlife is pointless (if it's eternal) because punishment or reward is supposed to teach you something, and you're supposed to use that information to improve yourself the next time that happens. How can there be a next time if it never comes, because there's an eternity before it?

The thing that gets me to question religion the most is an eternal hell. Seems extreme especially for those who basically try to live good lives but are not religious and or brought up in the "wrong" religion. To be tormented forever seems evil.

the concept of afterlife scares me now. an eternity of love and never-ending happiness can never get boring because it is never-ending happiness meaning you will always be happy, so it’s not that i’m scared of. i think it just petrified me to know i’m not going to be human anymore. i will never make a mistake, there will never be any emotion or sadness or fear or achievement. all would be pointless. it’s fucking scary, but i also realize that as a human, i am looking for reason. if i wasn’t human- if i was some otherworldly being- maybe i wouldn’t care about having a purpose or reason. even just to think that i won’t be human anymore eventually, it’s the worst feeling, dreadful, petrifying, there’s no word to describe exactly how it feels. it’s a sudden and meaningless stop to our very being, which passively comes closer until it takes you. it has no intention of hurting you, but it does. in the worst way. it was always going to happen, and you, as a human, were never permanent. i think i the only thing an afterlife could give that would not scare me (as a human being) is the ability to keep being human- the ability to express myself, feel emotion, and to live and love.

This brought back an old memory. In the 1st or 2nd grade, catholic school, the nun explained what heaven is like. God sitting on his golden throne, in the middle of endless concentric circles of angels, saints, yada, yada. My first thought was BORING. Thanks, DarkMatter, we think alike. You will notice that heaven looks more realistic in this one. It took 3 days to render, using the same environment/effects software used in The Avengers, Hunger Games, How to Train Your Dragon, Madagascar 3, Despicable Me 2, and Chronicle (to name a few). Hell was created with the same program, called Vue, but for that I just made a still frame with no animation. The characters, as usual, were made in Anime Studio.

I honestly don't want there to be anything after. I mean, I feel like life is lived for the purpose of living life? Our purpose isn't to be good people so that we can go to heaven, it's to be good people so that we can help the world and improve life. I want to do my best in life, and then go to sleep. You know, sink into pure peace and joy, and never be concerned about anything ever again. Death seems nice, as long as there's nothing after.

I think The Good Place had a pretty good idea what you do in the afterlife. (SPOILERS) Instead of being punished/tortured for eternity, you would go through trials, lessons and experiences that make you a better person until you manage to get into heaven. In heaven, you go nuts and have your fun. When get bored, you just walk down this passage and that's it. The end. You cease to exist. Whatever is left of your essence or soul or whatever is carried down to earth, where it inspires someone to make them to be better.

Imagine if every moment in heaven was pure euphoria. Doesn't that sound terrible? I'm being completely serious.

as someone who is still a theist but have been considering leaving my faith for a while , this has encouraged me to consider the afterlife concept in a way I never would, good points and genius idea

Thats why I want valhalla if I can choose an eternity. It may be a daily routine too with the battle and the feasts, but how you perform in that battle can change day after day, as both you and the other "team" gets to fight you again and again, all is friendly terms as no one can truely die: and every day, everyone will try to do better than the previous day. Its like an eternal video game in a way, with a great meal to talk about what happened between sessions ^^ Even though its eternal, you have a goal to strive for that can take you all eternity, a goal of constantly improving yourself. Well, norse mythology didn't expect valhalla to last forever mind you, and the real goal was to prepare for Ragnarok... but I can see it work in the really long run though, as long as people that get sent here can find battling in this manner fun (not everyone's cup of tea, even if you do no ill by doing it).

One of the biggest draws to religion is people are fearful of death. And religion provides false reassurance to people that you'll be rewarded when you die if you buy into a specific religion. And if you don't then you go to a bad place. Telling kids about hell makes them grow up fearing even questioning what they've been told. My take on life is to live everyday to the fullest and don't let the little shit hold you down.

Long joke about heaven and hell. Man dies and goes to heaven. Spends couple of centuries walking among holy beings and other non-sinners. Eventually gets bored and asks god to go and visit hell, just to see what it's like. Arrives to hell, and first thing he sees is a huge party filled with music,drugs, sex and alcohol. Enjoys himself for a month straight and comes back to heaven. After another century of talking to the same saints and newly arrived non-sinners,he asks god to go to hell for another visit. Same story. Arrived, has his fun and comes back. Some time passes and he asks god if he can move to hell because it's more fun than in heaven. God tell him that if he moves, he can never come back, and the man agrees. Our hero arrives to hell, and is greeted by the devil who throws him into boiling pot full of sinners. He asks the dark lord what may be the problem? To which he gets a reply: "Don't compare vacation to emigration"

This is a great explanation to help Christians understand why nonbelievers can't force themselves to believe in God. If they don't feel there's sufficient evidence, they won't truly believe, and no amount of threats can change what someone truly believes in his or her heart.

When I converted to Wicca after having grown up a Christian, I found the story of what a lot of Wiccans believe happens when you die(I say 'most',bc Wicca doesn't have any requirement that you believe something that doesn't work for you, it's a 'personal responsibility' religion where there's no concept of sin, or divine judgement. However, the down side is if you get 20 of us in a room,and ask a question, you'll get 40 answers,lol), you pretty much wind up where you think you'll wind up, so if a person experiences hell bc it's where they think they should go, but they have the ability to leave once they realize they have that choice...if you've ever watched the scene in What Dreams May Come where Robin William's character goes through Hell to find his wife, what the character that goes with him down there tells him that those souls could leave at any time, they just have to have enough mental strength. Basically they're there only bc it's where they thought it's where they *deserved* to wind up.

According to most religions if you are in the side of worshiping god, you be a happy zombie unable to question what you do, 'another kind of hell ?'. But i beleive when you are died, you are died, Period!

While this is a pretty good video, I think you need to do one where these same principles are applied to real world values. Like would you take a job if the boss said you will get paid someday, he doesn't know when, you just have to believe you will get paid at some point and it will make all the work you're doing now worth it. Or if a politician had the slogan "Just believe someday I will make things better!" would anyone vote for him? Or if a doctor refused to give medical treatment because he believed that aliens would come down and cure all disease so he doesn't have to. Would anyone be alright with those kind of things? Why wouldn't they feel the same about religion?
