In the next video - we talk about expanding that basic MEA recipe and core idea and expand into antibiotic/charcoal or even hydrogen peroxide! Why use antibiotic agar? Why not? #mushrooms #fungi #humblefungus #mycology #fungiculture
Really awesome series man, happy your doing this for the mush community. In the future would you do a series on sectoring and isolating cultures? I know how but it would be useful to some who dont know and there is not a lot of videos on the subject on youtube.
Hi! Been loving your videos lately and you are my main source of information as of now. I think the bigger science related channels are more concerned about video production quality, than quality of information and the so called "truths" of different sciences like mycology, here. I started to grow mushrooms ~8months ago - and it's funny how just as I am naturally progressing through the art of mycology and moving onto agar - you post a video ;D Bought my first pack of Agar Agar a week ago unaware of the fact that a new "Humble Fungus' Super Cool Nerd Shit" -series was about to be released. Ha, funny coincidence, but lucky me! Anyway, I rarely comment cuz I never have nothing useful to say, but this time I have a question... since I've been swallowing up information about agar the past few days and that's the only thing I can concentrate on; You mentioned accidental creation of antibiotic resistant strains, like strep-whatever-coccus(did I get it right?? maybe i did), so could you elaborate further on that subject? How easy/hard is it to create harmful bacteria and/or other sorts of actually dangerous stuff? Most of us probably don't have clean laboratory conditions, and my current setup is so ADHD-engineered, that only people like you could understand. maybe, I dunno, now I'm wayyyy off track anyway. You seem well educated about the subject matter of mycology and I'm just a beginner who's only information source is the internet. Many things can go wrong along the way, since I'm not teaching myself these things structurally, or in the right order, that might be the only drawback in the act self-learning different stuff off of internet and books. I'm not the most patient out there, but i am precise when it comes to things i'm obsessed about hahaha Okay, hope ye well fellow human being. Love from Finland!
Hey brother, I have really been enjoying your videos. My issue is triche😡 tends to come from my sterile tek innoculating bags or jars. I'm not a beginner but not a veteran either. Would you think building a plastic tent and having a SAB inside of that would help? Like you could wipe down the inside of the plastic walls and have much less air flow?
Very interesting video, i have been taking grief in mycology groups for trying out activated charcoal on agar, people say it does absolutely nothing besides adds color. They also say that peroxide would just kill the mycelium. I have spores on . activated charcoal agar now and they are growing slowly but they are growing.
You are fucking a God! Thank you! Out of ALL the months of me researching agar recipies, you taught me more in this one video that all of those previous videos put together! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Loving these videos man! I'm curious if using charcoal or hydrogen peroxide would be a better option when using a multi-score syringe that has been purchased or a spore print to an agar plate?
I would say so. Anything that you can do to prevent contam is what you want to do. I usually use charcoal plates when I'm germinating and I definitely notice a difference between plates without.
Liquid cultures are easy to create and multiply in number; so, try it out with 2 identical cultures except one has 3% H2O2 at the concentration of 100 ml in 750 ml of H2O, and see what happens. I've heard of a small fish tank compressor bubbling with a filtered (syringe filter) tube in a liquid culture jar, and increased the growth rate of the mycelium a lot. 🥸
