Gel electrophoresis is used for separation and isolation of DNA fragments. It is a technique used for separation of substances of different ionic properties. on electric field, dna fragments are -ively charged molecules moves toward anode according to their molecular size through agarose gel.
The negatively charged DNA molecules migrate towards the positive charge under the influence of constant current , thus the separation depends on the mass and charge of DNA. The DNA molecules are forced to move through the agarose gel pores.
Applications of gel electrophoresis
1. In the separation of DNA fragments for DNA fingerprinting to investigate crime scenes.
2. To analyze results of polymerase chain reaction.
3. To analyze genes associated with a particular illness.
4. In DNA profiling for taxonomy studies to distinguish different species.
