@@emilygould135 Well kind of. The actions they did in this game were different because the story was different, but you can see every champion pretty much having the same personality. The timeline split happened after each champion was born, so they are the same.

I especially love what they did with King Rhoam. In Breath of the Wild, he was super serious and seemingly unable to show any amount of kindness or empathy towards anyone, particularly Zelda. In this game, he is still a serious character, but he has a soft, kind part of him that makes him go from one of my least favorite to one of my favorite characters in Zelda.

BotW forced you to read between the lines when it came to him. I knew he cared about her, but prioritized his role as the king before his role as a father. While it made him seem more cold and cruel, he just didn't want Hyrule and her people to fall. He could have done that in a better way, but I guess he had a lot to think about as the king of Hyrule, which is why he seems so.. distant in the first place. You can literally read about his feelings in the diary in his hidden study in Hyrule Castle after starting the DLC in BotW.

@Mystic Digi AoC is a nice game if we walk about the gameplay and the animations, but the writing, imo is poor and full of fanservice moments. I can understand if you like it but please, it's not even comparable to BotW. It makes me so sad to see that people nowadays still think BotW has no plot. It's all there guys, it's up to us to find it. Talk to the NPCs about the Champions. Talk to Kass. Read the diaries, fight the blights multiple times and you'll see those details that flesh them out perfectly. Anyway... I don't get what kind of new interaction made us realize what they're like in AoC?? Link that protects Zelda EVERY SINGLE TIME? I loved their relationship in BotW because it had FLAWS. They had EMOTIONS, in AoC everything about the writing is so cliché, cringey and BORING. Revali acting like a jerk? Yeah he's not the nicest among them but in BotW not only did he acknowledged Link, but we got to know why he acted that way. In AoC? Nothing of that. Mipha's relationship with Link barely existed. We got to know she's in love with him when she asked Daruk to train (speaking of which, why Daruk? Oh yeah they decided to made them speak so that we got to see 'hey wow look the champions are talking to each other yesss so cool' when it made no sense at all as Mipha COULD TRAIN WITH THE ZORA SOLDIERS) We had NO developmen from ANY of the characters, except MAYBE for the Yiga clan and King Rhoam. And "The characters barely existed in BotW" what? Sometimes I think people just play without even paying attention to the plot and the DLC they purposely included to give us more info about them. It's up to us to find the details, just because they're not in the cutscenes doesn't mean they don't exist. Just because AoC has more cutscenes doesn't mean it's better. BotW has less cutscenes but there is WAY much more depth to them (except from Daruk I guess, in AoC they made him sarcastic when he's naive in BotW so again out of character). Revali is way more deep in BotW, he's one of the best characters because he has real emotions and struggle with himself. So did Zelda in botw. So did even LINK IN BOTW. How could you say the character didn't exist in BotW when they even gave us a reason that explain WHY LINK DOESN'T TALK SMH

For me one of the most impactful and intense moments that filled me with indescribable emotion was the quest Air and Lightning, and Fire and Water. Racing to save the guardians from their doomed fate filled me with anxiety, fear, hope, and so much more. The music played off the emotional scenes so well. Watching their life bars tick down lower and lower fills you with such dread, strong monsters constantly blocking your path to stop you from reaching them in time. Faced with all of that you still somehow make it to their divine beasts. The relief sets in and the joy on each Guardian’s face at your arrival shows how thankful they are that you came. (You can’t fool me Revali I know you missed me.) but then it’s still not over, the Blight Ganon’s are still hell bent on killing the Champions regardless of your arrival. What follows is an intense fight after you’ve already been bruised and beaten to secure your friends safety. It’s a hard fought battle but eventually you manage to pull off the impossible. One by one you beat back the Ganon’s and rewrite history by saving the guardians from their untimely deaths and then in turn they beat back hordes of monsters with their divine beasts, marking a turning point when mere moments ago all hope seemed lost. It’s a roller coaster of emotions and I haven’t felt that way playing a game in a long time.

Revali for example actually had a reason for being a dick towards Link. He put himself through a tough and isolated training in order to become the best warrior of the Rito and with his entire race being proud of him, he held himself with high regard. So when he finally met Link, and Link stoically decided to ignore him, Revali took it as Link mocking him. That's a valid reason to dislike someone (heck, Link's silence is the same reason why Zelda also initially disliked him). In AoC, Revali didn't have to work hard for his ability and Link apparently doesn't have his reason for not talking anymore, so Revali literally just comes off as a douche for no reason. I liked Revali in BotW because he was fleshed out. In AoC however, he's just this flanderized version that's just a pure douche. AoC might have more cutscenes, but it also has significantly worse writing. The only thing that was improved was the Yiga Clan. The rest is worse.
@brycebitetti1402
@brycebitetti1402 3 года назад
@@MrSupahLink I agree. There was actually a lot behind the characters in Breath of the Wild, it was just that the game didn't have enough time to really get to show you all of it. In Age of Calamity, so much of what was so interesting about the story is either completely absent or glossed over. Just to name a few instances(I apologize in advance for the length): Zelda and Link's relationship had a really interesting progression in Breath of the Wild. She initially hates him because while she's worked incredibly hard and gotten nothing in return, Link has supposedly had everything handed to him without even trying. Zelda giving Link a chance after their run in with the Yiga Clan allows both of them to open up to each other in a way they haven't been able to with anyone else. It makes sense that a romance of some sorts could spring from that, the two share a similar burden in destiny and a similar mask that they have to wear through which friendship, and supposedly something deeper, could blossom. In Age of Calamity, this narrative element is so glossed over it might as well not even be there. Zelda is implied to take a liking to Link before he gets the Master Sword, meaning that their relationship is not built on mutual trust and similarities, but the barest of interactions. After he gets the sword, she never turns on Link like she does in the memories in Breath of the Wild. Instead she expresses minor dissatisfaction at Link's progress which is immediately resolved after a pep talk with Urbosa. Her powers awakening due to her love for Link, which is implied to be the same as in the original timeline, doesn't makes sense because they have not formed a meaningful connection. As you mentioned, Revali is flanderized to be a generic jerk in Age of Calamity, without any of the nuance that made his character interesting. In Breath of the Wild he is shown to harbor insecurities about his worth that he ties to his skill. He trains so hard and flaunts his abilities so much because he associates his self worth with being the best, a perception that Link challenges. That's why he dislikes him so much, not only because he takes his silence as mocking, but because he can't accept the fact that Link may very well be better than him and in his own eyes, render himself worthless. Revali harbors no such insecurities in Age of Calamity. After I gave such a thorough dissection of his original character, Revali is reduced to an arrogant prick who sees himself as superior for no real reason. There is no indication that he hates Link because he sees him as challenging his worldview, just that he sees him as beneath him. These are really just two examples of the story being overly simplified from what it was in Breath of the Wild. The way the memories and dairy entries conveyed the story made the story seem like a large interconnected web of characters and how they reacted to the impending Calamity individually, and how those choices spiraled into the interactions between other characters. In Age of Calamity everyone reacts to it as a collective, not as individuals. We never really get inside anyone's head aside from Zelda, and as such everyone else feels a lot more shallow than they were initially. When people say that the Champions lacked depth, they say that because the game only allocates a scant few of its already slim pickings of cutscenes to who they were. The real depth lies in the bigger picture that their diaries and the stories of Kass and their tribes paint. Age of Calamity offers nothing more than hollow fanservice. So in that essence it's just another Warriors game, but one with a ton of missed potential.

I wouldn't say better, but different. BOTW's apocalyptic world called for a cryptic and spread-out story. Of course, in regards to that, it's easier to build a better, narrative structure than BOTW. But I wouldn't call the story itself necessarily better. I do believe though that both games compliment each other story-wise. But I am honest, I would've loved a proper (100%) prequel instead of a hybrid. And I thought Nintendo tried to do away with the time lines and unify them somehow, now we have another time line split and we don't know yet which time line has split (since we don't know BOTW's placement and therefor AOC's prior to the split). However I can still see a unification because, since Tarrako had knowledge of other beings in other time lines (or Zelda's mother and with that Goddess Hylia), that means the Goddesses, and the Goddess Hylia to an extend, know of other time lines. I'd expect Gods/Goddesses to be omnipotent, omnipresent and omni-aware. So who's to say they won't try to merge the time lines.
@samiamtheman7379
@samiamtheman7379 3 года назад
Eh, the timelines are a bit confusing. I also wouldn't take Nintendo too seriously with "trying to unify the timelines" since they've been known to barely follow their own timelines anyway. I mean, pretty sure after they released an official timeline, the very next game ignored it. Edit: I also feel like just making it a straight prequel wouldn't really fit with the Dynasty Warriors gameplay and character selection and the time travel timeline split thing gave them more creative freedom for the game's story.

While AoC is a game that has a linear story mode, BotW is a game designed to let you create your own story in a preexisting setting. In AoC, the story is delivered like a playable movie, while in BotW you will have to immerse yourself in the game, so that you can learn the story behind your own adventure. Because of that, AoC story will feel smoother to follow, leaving this false sensation that it's a better story. However, BotW is incontestable the game with the richer story. There's no need to argue about it, you just have to play the games. The number of named characters, the number of quests and interactions, the number of things to discover about the past and the setting, about your character and his fallen companions. The amount of mysterious places and hidden secrets. The immersion you will feel in the open world of BotW goes far beyond anything a hack and slash game could deliver. Needless to say that without it's predecessor, AoC story wouldn't make sense, or at least you wouldn't be able to appreciate the game to it's fullest, as even the climax of the game assumes you are aware of what happened in BotW (in it's timeline). So, no, Age of Calamity's story isn't better than Breath of the Wild's story. Yet, if you prefer games in which the story is linear and is delivered to you just as if you were watching a movie, them AoC will have a better story FOR YOU...

One makes you feel the epic scale of the war, one makes you feel the epic feel of a one man army. One makes you feel emotional for the character moments they share together, one makes you feel sadness because those moments are in the distant past and everyone has died. Both have great scenes and fantastic moments and character development. Both have great gameplay in their own ways. I dont think either is better than the other. There were times in the game when I thought they might make the Calamity inevitable like at Fort Havens where Link was fighting the 4 blights, and at the end where Zelda repeats the phrase "I must... protect... everyone" and cries in an almost exact copy of the original shot in BotW. They really gave it a sense of some sort of temporal "continuity" that makes me believe that this game definitely created a canon alternate timeline.

OkI have to disagree with you for some reasons 1. The history and evolution of the relationship between link and zelda. This is not because of the ship. I mean the way they start their relationship and how they become friends and understand each other's feelings, something that does not happen in age of calamity because their relationship is flat. 2. The weight of the champions' losses. That the champions were defeated only makes their people, link and zelda lament but it also makes them stronger wanting to protect those who remain. 3. The story after the cataclysm. Seeing new heroes inspired by their legacies is fantastic, it just shows that they left a great legacy and ended their cycle as characters, plus how deep the story becomes when you have to recover your memories to realize that you will not let it repeat itself. I love the game but i don’t think that is better 😅

The only argument they use against the game is that you can skip everything and tell me does that change what happened? that's part of the player not the game. Tragedies make characters more interesting and give way to the evolution of characters. Have you ever wondered why people hate that characters revive? For this reason, because it is not necessary, the story was fine. This was a bad fanfic and I won't lie to you. Like the character development. They added nothing new to the story about the champions, instead they are rewritten by new writers. Some plot holes I need to debate: - if Zelda built Terrako when we was a child why did Rhoam didn’t recognize him when Zelda show it? - Did Sooga die? - why did master Kohga get a redemption arc and not Revali? - why did Revali and Teba’s relationship was treated in a such boring way? I bet the writers hate him - who the hell is Astor? Is he a mage? How is he able to see the future? Was he the fortune teller the king was telling us about? - why, why why Link would be able to protect Zelda from a piece of falling castle without getting smashed - the master sword scene is ridiculous. They got to the woods but why? What if the wielder of the sword wasn’t among them??!? Nobody knew Link was the one destined to use it. Neither he did. Guess what would've happened if they got there and surprise no one is able to wield the sword, like "wow why did we come here in the first place again??"

Way long after Link got the Master Sword in the original timeline. You may think, but for gameplay... Yes, I get it. Link couldn't have the Master Sword from the get-go gameplay-wise, but that's not it. In Zelda's diary in BotW, she said Link barely ever spoke bacause all of the pressure of being the chosen hero, a quality he conserved even after losing his memories. In AoC he had none of that pressure, yet he never speaks here. They outright changed things already explained, and the only plausible in-lore explanation for it (Terrako) wasn't the cause if it. At least in the original timeline things stay like they always were.

I’m really glad the game isn’t canon. The devs had a lot more room to experiment, for example, the scene were Zelda unlocks her power is a lot more emotional and tense than botw in my opinion. imo Age of Calamity in general just feels severely underrated. I think people got hung up on the whole "alternate timeline" time travel thing, dubbed it non-canon, and judged everything else unfairly because of it. One of the largest complaints with Botw's story is that it all takes place in the past and you never experience it yourself, but Age of Calamity _literally_ fixes this issue.

Spoilers: AoC has so many plot problems though imo. It never explains in the story who Astor truly is or his motivations. Same for Sooga. Why did Zelda's power awaken, in the original it was her love for Link but they don't go through the same events that lead to that love. If it was just her friendship why didn't it activate when her dad supposedly died? Why was Impa running around with the Shiekah Slate in the beginning originally anyway? The game is filled with clichés like Zelda's tear activating Terrako's time travel or the King being alive the whole time. If the king was alive why didn't he show up until the very end. Wtf was he? Speaking of which, where did Sooga go? Did be die? He isn't mentioned at all afterwards, odd for someone who is Kohga's "best lackey". How do you just forget something like Terrako, she clearly had a very large connection to it. There's more and you can really tell the story was rather rushed near the end especially with it killing Terrako not once, but twice, and Zelda having like 3 scenes where she does the same breakdown crap, including one right in front of the final boss. Get up so you don't die lmao.

@7:25 I think the little egg bot went back in time a few months in relation to where he started. He was activated when Zelda used her power to save Link at Hateno. That was a few days after Calamity Ganon activated, back before Link went into stasis for 100 years.

I was really disappointed in age of calamity it barley felt I was experiencing 100 years ago it felt like I was just playing a warriors game also Astor was just the guy from Kirby star allies,and I didn’t need time travel to happen idk why that feels so out of place that I can’t see that in botw,so what about the champions well incredibly disappointing to me revali mean and annoying already seen that nothing new.Mipha did we see her and link spend time together no we only get half of a scene once again wtf guys and how the hell did she fall in love with him if he never did what happened when he visited Zoras Domain and killed that Lynel.Urbosa doesn’t have her thoughts on ganon being the same race instead she does it because right thing to do same goes with durak he gets a pass though and the music is just as good idk why he even mentioned that since it had nothing to do with the story I still had fun with here is a bonus the game is repetitive and the bosses suck ok the first half of ganon was decent but once you learn his pattern it’s a brezz second half was just the same and I took zero damage I played on hard mode also no wonder this game has a 79% I give it a 6/10

Not to mention how they completely forgot Revali’s plausible reasons to be resented to Link like he was in Botw! In aoc he’s just incoherent and jerk because he saw how Link fought him, he knows he’s a capable fighter so why being angry at him and insult him?

A lot of people say the story was lazy in age of calamity and I am on board with them I don’t know what this guy means when it’s better when it really isn’t just cheap things like how egg boy just wishes the descendants into existence now that was pretty cheap and lazy I wouldn’t to see more mipha and links relationship to grow nope their was half a scene of that the frame rate does drop a lot during my play through oh and there was no reason for mipha to have feelings for link since what was told what happened in her diary doesn’t even happen in the game egg boy I completely don’t care for him also when he turned bad was suppose to make us feel awfully sad,but honestly I just kinda rolled my eyes since the game just tells us to like him since he’s cute the only reason he exist was because of time travel which was used really wrong and once again cheap literally the champions balled got me to learn more about the game than the actual prequel yes even the memories got me to learn more yeah that father and daughter one yeah I got the gist from that I didn’t need the game to right out give me a straight forward summary of their relationship botw had everything this game had for characters,but better this game was not what we needed out of the franchise and the game just screams not canon considering that they don’t know who is the knight that seals the darkness is or how Zelda met the champions god I keep noticing more and more flaws the more I played in faceted I stopped playing since the started to feel repetitive so 4.7/10 at least the music was great

I loved the story! Since it became pretty clear early on that this wasn’t the same story as BOTW, I never knew what was going to happen! It developed the characters so much more. The whole time playing it and fighting Ganon’s forces, I kept thinking “this is how it should have been, our heroes should have won”. It gave me a complete feeling to see an alternate ending like this. I would have been happier with an exact prequel with this level of production, but this was unexpected and still made me happy.

One minor scene I find very memorable and somewhat important is after the events/battle at the Spring of Courage: Zelda doubting herself and her abilities once again, but gets supported. Impa berating her encourangingly, Terrako booping and Link smiling - showing that Zelda has friends who accept and support her no matter what. Maybe it's not that big of a deal for the characters themselves, but this scene gives us players so much more characterization and interaction.

This was really an epic tale told incredibly well. I would put it right up there with Lord of the rings in terms of scope. This game did an absolutely amazing job of making you get a sense of the desperation of the state that Hyrule was in with the shadow of the calamity looming over it. Some of those battles truly gave you a sense of hopelessness of the situation. It constantly reminded you how drastically outnumbered the champions were, but at the same time how incredibly skillful and strong each of them were, and it happened to just barely be enough to win the day. In terms of gameplay yes, breath of the wild is the superior game, after all it is just another warriors game, which I'm not complaining about I'm a huge fan of the series. In terms of story, breath of the wild doesn't even come close. In fact I would say that this is by far the best story Nintendo has ever told. I would even go so far as to say that they did such a good job of making you feel like you were there and a part of the story that the story itself was one of the best in any medium in modern times. Truly an epic experience.

@@UltimateTobi my distaste regarding aoc’s story comes from its marketing as a direct prequel. It changed a lot of things and I found it to be wasted potential. I didn’t love the ending either. As a stand-alone game (not comparing it to botw) I think the story is a lot better. The problems simply arise when compared to botw, which it should be as it was marketed that way, and is kind of sad that I have to look at it on its own. Still way cool to see generally what happened.

@@wellexcusemeprincess4122 I didn't mean to disagree with my statement. In fact I agree and I expected a 100% prequel. BOTW didn't have a proper narrative structure because its apocalyptic world called for a spread-out and cryptic story; as was presented. Of course it's easy to have a proper narrative structure compared to that. Now if the narrative/story itself is appealing comes down to taste. So technically I disagree with MNB and say no, AOC's story is not better. But different.

I like the storyline potential for future games that AoC gives us. We now have two timelimes with two Hyrules. One Hyrule is a continuation of what Hyrule had been for 10,000 years, and the other Hyrule is a rebuilt Hyrule. Each of those offers different potential for different kinds of games and storylines down the road.

Knowledge of the future pushed Astor and the Yiga clan to be more active. I doubt Kohga would have impersonate Urbosa without Astor's prompting. The scenes we saw in BotW in the desert, Link and Zelda were often by themselves. They didn't have an army with them as the Yiga clan and monsters were not as active as they were in AoC.

I definitely agree with you on most of your points. I adored botw's story when the game first came out but after playing aoc can see why their were complaints about the lack of a deeper narrative in botw (in particular looking back now the dlc could've offered more cutscenes about the champions to really make the 20 dollar price worthwhile.) I think both games offer something special and by directly comparing aoc to botw the events of the original game are even more tragic imo. I was also annoyed with the lack of younger Purah, Impa and Robbie in botw's flashbacks and aoc fixed that issue for me (especially Impa who was for whatever reason absent in all of botw's memories)

Interesting how you mention the music is better when talking about the story. I can read a master class book right now and that has no music. If you wanna say the music is better than in BOTW, that's fine, but music doesn't matter when it comes to a story. If you can listen to a story without needing music, then it may be a masterful story.

There are several technical differences between a written book and an audiovisual story. In movies an animation there is much more less time to explain things, while books have pages. Good music is not just there, it is made to set tones, to set the scenes or tell a character secret. We can take for example Vah Ruta's theme in BOTW, that song really tells a lot about the champions final moments.
