I just wanted to let you know that I am extremely grateful for your videos. You really saved me after a year with a bad teacher. You also have rad music taste as well! Thanks again!
I like to play a little game whenever I watch Tom's videos. Every time he says clergy or nobility I take a little sip of my drink. Lol it's crazy how much power and impact those two groups had in history
@8:50 I'm having a lot of trouble finding that map, The Legacy of the Age of Exploration. It seems to be very similary to _Europa Universalis IV_'s trade map.
Oh, I think I got very lucky, cropping it out of a screenshot of your video, and then searching Google by image. Still a little blurry though. 4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mck7YJd2VD4/VAyNPdufAnI/AAAAAAAAA9A/BFCL5AI1RNA/s1600/ColonyTradeRoutes.jpg
Your videos are the best review!! Found you with APUSH (better than crash course) and your still make the most helpful videos! I can't thank you enough Tom!
The portuguese explored many regions.Often they were the first europeans to get there. From Greenland,Canada,Brasil,Central America,Africa to India,Japan,China,Australia. They left more than 800 fortresses, monuments all over the world. Many great sailors were portuguese, some navigating for Spain. Some say Columbus was portuguese born in the village of Cuba in Portugal.Sadly the 1755 tsunami destroyed Lisbon and many age of discovery docs were lost. Google for "Evolution of the Portuguese Empire".
the Portuguese empire was to the Age of Discovery & Exploration what Galileo Galilei was to modern physics and astronomy. it would be intellectually dishonest to not emphasize the significance and importance of their contributions during the 15th and 16th centuries.
While Castille(future Spain) was pounding at the walls of the last Muslim state, Portugal got bored and explored Africa's coast's. That is why when you discuss the treaty that divided the world between the two powers, the Portuguese had no problem with taking just Brazil because they already had access to India. So technically, by papal decision Portugal actually had a claim on all of Africa, granted in the end claims do nothing if you cannot enforce them.
You do know there were people here already, so it wasn't discovered, Europeans brought death and trauma to the Indigenous people. That, is the so-called age of exploration. Imagine, you have a nice home, nice car, someone walks across the street and discovers it, that person then claims your home. That is the age of discovery.
