Literally don't see any good reason to remove the Autoqueue option. It's a good quality of life feature and slamming a specific key over and over just to accomplish the same effect feels like a waste of time.

I totally agree with this. No point in removing the auto queue. It makes the game more accessible to new RTS players. Also, if you're not careful with it can absolutely mess you up late game as you can wind up with a wrong army composition

Improved path finding for units is something i'd like to see. Having a titan get stuck with 1 villager in the way feels very clunky.

I really hope they don't forsake the Chinese (or gods forbid Atlanteans). They have been poorly executed originally, but Retold has a chance to revamp the entire expansion to be what it is meant to be. I hope more civs come our way too. Aztecs and Slavs have been fan favorites for a while.

Chinese would have been a good idea as civilization, but as it is they don't bring anything interesting to the gameplay. Most of their god powers and some mythological creatures are also really bad. Adding them back should be nice since it was an important civilization, but only if they are reworked from scratch.

Yeah, atlateans / chinese were weird and never really felt as tightly designed to me as the original 3 civs. Atlanteans had a unique playstyle but thematically didn't make a ton of sense (they were just like, another version of the greeks I guess?), where as chinese thematically made a lot of sense, but wasn't that unique/fun to play.

I think Chinese should not be in Retold. I think Chinese should be in AoM 2, along with Japanese, Indian and Korean civs. That would be awesome to see, and it would fit quite well.

keep auto-queue. make a default unit attack option 1) attack nearest unit 2)attack what u counter best 3)attack what attacks you .( like the default unit stance). guard an adjustable area option. adjustable Ai handicap. A random hidden handicap mode (the same handicap for all players) so u have to make your build order on the fly and don't use ready ones.

Ooh Boit. I hope so much that auto-queue stays! Even in ranked if possible! it leaves the NOOBs and even the PROs with more attention to strategize, scout, micro. I see AOE2 as the eSports hyper-competitive game and AOM as the most "chill" and "creative" alternative. While the AOE community is debating which of the 100 variations of Swordmen is the most optimal for the current meta, we can ride sharks or simply bask in the glory of our lighthouses! Prostagma? In order for AOM to have a growing competitive scene it first needs to have a growing player base, and it can accomplish this by making AOM:Retold the most fun game in the franchise! Also, as an adult i cant spare the time to learn to macro optimally, id much rather focus on learning the many fun things AOM has to offer like strats, scouting, raiding etc...and climb ranked by continuously testing how far some new and crazy build can go. There is so much to explore in AOM. This is its strength! Finally, if you forget to produce units for a while, there is almost no coming back... It is one of the most impactful and frequent errors you can make in this strategy-tactics-game while also being completely unrelated to any of your strategy-tactics. Its really hard to justify it or to find a way in which it truly enriches the AOM gameplay experience. I am convinced that people mostly want auto-queue to be removed because they secretly fetishize steep, endless learning curves and specifically want larger skill gaps between players, so that they can find a thing in their lives where they can pump excessive time and effort into, to be rewarded with a sense of superiority. Tough words i know, but i believe there is something to it.

Commenting mostly for the algorithm, go BoIt! BTW The Viper says he is totally excited for this title as well and plans to "play the hell out of it." 😄 I would think they would add a decent attack move, it is even in AoE I: DE's engine so think AoM should be no probs.

Would a troop train priority button be a good addition? For example, late game where your constantly at max pop spamming hoplite & heliopolis, setting helioplis as the priority so that when one is ready to pop out, your barracks will hold hoplites back until there is population space for the heliopolis. This would be instead of never gettin the seige out because the hoplite get out first, or does this oversimplify the game? Either that or a banner you can toggle that shows the quantity of each troop beong trained in real time? Then you can notice if troops stop training etc.

I think the auto spaw schould stary. Many RTS (Supreme commander, cossacs, warlods battlecry, CoH, Down od war 1)have this option and its able player to more focus on fights:)

Im a singleplayer even tho i respect and im happy that there is multiplayer community and i hope it stays that way, but i neeeed more campaigns, more stories because it has so much potential with all these different civilizations, for me AoM has the best singleplayer campaign out of all strategy games i ever played, the ones that come close are BfME and Starcraft.

It's not a competitive tool in the sense that it lowers the skill ceiling. So if you want to have the best RTS players compete and really see the difference between them you kinda need to not include it. But I can 100% see the other side of the coin and in the end that decision should be up to the Devs taking into account all the opinions.

@@david7996 it decreases the amount of difference in skill. The less input you need, the less impactful a skilled player can be. They should simply have an option to play matches with or without autoque

I appreciate your request for community contribution. I would undoubtedly state that the Age of Mythology and Titans campaign are some of the most loved and well created age of empire franchise campaigns ever made. You should definitely create a new campaign of some sort, potentially with Kastor or Arkantos and seriously consider this as part of the marketing effort. It is an integral part of the game and I would urge campaign improvements and/or a new campaign if the resource capacity is available. Thanks for reading.

I've played the first AoM game when I was still learning to read and to this day I love the game. I love custom games and find I'm always learning something new, at least when it comes to the editor. I've never really cared for ranked games but the appeal is obvious. I think the Devs should keep the auto-queuing function or at least make it toggleable in the host settings.

I ´m harshly against the removement of auto-queue and i´m suprised that you campaign for this. The only reason that i could hear out of the video in favor of this motion is that "pro" RTS players, which are not familiar with AOM, can have an advantage against noob players. Why is that even a good thing? If the "pros" like AOM, they would play it longer than a week either way, and then it doesn´t matter anymore. On the other side that would automatically heighten the entry barrier for new players ... one of the biggest problems in competitive multiplayer imo. Another way to look at this: Shouldn´t be the player who is more familiar with AOM in general be the better AOM player?! I demand clarification! Other than that; nice episode as always Boit, much love and keep them coming ;)!

Yeah the autoqueue debate is quite strange to me, too. I remember when aot came out and understood that argument at the time, but nowadays I feel it's not hampering the competitive scene at all. Maybe I'm not understanding Boit's point here. Still, great video as always, keep'em coming

I mean they could just have it as autoqueue enable/disable as an option for custom games if it really was for competitive players only. Removing it just harms the other 99% of the playerbase because it does make the game a lot more noob friendly (like me).

It's interesting seeing the kinds of points you'd raise knowing how much more you play AoM than most of us. They should include Atlanteans, we've had them for 20 years, we should at least get such a staple with the game on release.

Honestly, I absolutely want AoMR to be as accessible to and played by as many people as possible. Which I'd why I want autoqueue to stay. Hell, I feel like we should get additional quality of life features as default as well. Imagine an expandable universal production tab like the one you can see in spectactor mode, so you can see and adjust your army production in real time without having to hop between six different buildings. AoMR could seriously innovate and update the genre just by adding a few more buttons. I know it might feel like "cheating" for veteran players who've spent a lifetime micro-managing RTS building production, but I think the hard truth is: 1) RTSes have been gradually adding more QoL features over their lifespan (mass unit selection, idle villager buttons, etc) and 2) if new RTSes only cater to the most hardcore players, then the base won't grow. There's a limited market for RTSes right now, and I'd ultimately prefer for AoMR to draw in the biggest base possible and keep this game alive for years to come.

I think the things I would want for Retold to be perfect in terms of big picture gameplay would be 1. a total rework of the Chinese including the campaign, 2. a few extra bonuses for the Atlantean major and minor gods (or just incorporating some stuff from tale of the dragon) because it always felt to me that the Atlanteans had fewer bonuses and their myth technologies weren't as interesting as the stuff from the original 3 factions, not to mention that they feel like knockoffs of the Greeks, and 3. a new civilization, I would imagine something Mesoamerican would work great but Atlanteans do steal the aesthetics somewhat.

There should be pause timers as well so people can’t indefinitely pause your game when they are losing…I think this is EE exclusive but nothing more frustrating than a close 30 minute match that gets paused out

Like the most players are older i guess and keep playing this game like me, and i dont think big changes would find a path ti make everybody happy. But what everybody would make happy: Server based rooms, no lag, no bugs and maybe if somebody disconects an autosave or even gets replaced by an AI.

I consider it would be good to add the following changes: 1. Record games played by everyone and allow every player to see the games played by everyone, similar to what happens on Voobly. 2. Your rank will only change if the game lasts at least 3 minutes, this would avoid the existence of smurfs (smurfs are players with a high level that go down just to bother low level players, for example, someone is on the 2200 level and goes down to 1800 just to bother lower level players). 3. Your level is not the same for every civilization, in the following sense: games that you play as gaia only affect your rank as gaia, games that you play as Thor only affect your rank as Thor, so that every player is stimulated to play every god. I am on 1900 level with gaia (my major god), if I want to play as Thor I will loose every game, because with Thor my level would be 1700, since I never play this god. I want to play other gods, but it would be boring to loose several games until I discover my true level with other gods. 4. Other changes to improve balance of the game, specially weakening Greek which are by far the strongest civilization except for chinese (see for example the win rates presented by Bolt in one previous video). 5. We need more maps on random ranked games. Some maps like deathmatch do not appear on ranked maps and I consider it would be good to have more variety on this type of game.

I don't have an account on that AOE4 forum. So if any of you guys do make sure to tell them the game better have watchable recorded games like the original. In a similar format where the files and games can be shared. That has to be a part of the game. It is crucial but easily overlooked. It is a must as well as observer mode.

Yes, And I would love to able to rename and delete recorded games, plus have the recorded game list tell me what the basic details of a given match were before I watch it, such as the players' names, gods and ratings and the map's name. The recordings should also be numbered so that if I decide to watch the recordings of my last few games in one sitting, I can watch one to the end, then open the rec game list again and NOT accidentally select the same recording again, because I remembered that it's number was, for example, 42.

i don't get the autoqueue point. i think the button is pretty self-explanatory but even if it wasn't, why would it be a problem? of all the mechanics in the game, that would probably be one of the easiest to get used to

As a casual player I would like to be able to actually select player colour and please add more than 8, maybe even add an option like in AOE3 DE so we can choose any possible colour that will be visible just to us. As 300 is the natural pop limit, maybe instead give option to how many houses we can built so we can have huge epic battles while ranked will remain the same. Why? Sometimes 3v3 or 4v4 with AI changes into 1v3 or 1v4, even on hard, where I alone have to defeat my enemies, because allies don't really help at all so more pop space could be useful. Also ORIGINAL LIGHTING, I can't stress enough how bad and often hard to read lighting is in EE and how great it was in the original, especially on Anatolia and Ghost Lake. Please, please give it back!

Boit, i understand AQ perspective, but consider this: on one hand we have eggys. Safely booming under free watchtowers defended by free houses. Removing AQ wouldn't impact them until mid-late game. On the other hand, we have loki players, running like a madmans, trying to raid + defend their second hunt without loosing a single hersir. Imagine perspective how it would disbalance game (as it currenly is) for aggresive civs vs boomy/defensive civs 😉

Thanks for talking about the AI difficulty problem. That's the main thing that keeps me from playing for fun. I enjoy watching PvP, and I enjoyed the few games I've played vs AI with friends. Once we were good enough to beat medium, we moved on to hard, but the AI started leveraging its better resource rates and joint attacks much better than we could. I started playing against hard AI in solo, practicing build orders, downloading harder AI from modders, and I was able to get over the hump vs hard AI 1v1. My friends couldn't be bothered to work that hard to make the game fun again.

Imo for random maps: making the RMS script has always been there. Voobly's 'balance patch' is literally an RMS script which I have seen used/ran on EE, if you really want precise better hunt locations and stuff; I feel like it's partially modder's fault and player's fault not to use the scripts as they load directly into the game (no mods needed). If you prefer, they completely change the balance of the game in a patch, but it has seen such low usage overall that I feel it isn't really tested and hard to tell 'how different' the actual voobly balance changes (the ones that modified stats and things) really were; to this day I tried it and not sure really what's 'better/worse' in it. I don't think it's 'that' different in like AoE2, or other games, you just know you have to find that hunt, or boar, etc. that part is part of the game. For the AI I agree. There is a way to mod SetPlayerHandicap as a trigger (for some reason, not included in the game wtf), this can be put into RMS script or the scenario, so it is a lot more humanlike yet still difficult. I found putting like 50% is like putting a 1700-1800 player, they advance to the 1st age a bit faster, but their other timings are mostly like on time, and it's quite a good challenge. and the NPC timings are more normal, but the titans one is 100% which is like way 2x faster, I agree that it makes you play differently by like spamming towers and the AI itself doesn't get better, so it isn't really great AI battles built into the core game. I agree putting like 'better' AI or even just putting handicaps that represent player level would help a ton with the existing AI if it's left unchanged (e.g. easy should bump up to the old 'moderate/hard', add like a 'no AI' option for easy mode testers, moderate becomes like hard with 25% handicap, hard is still hard but with 50% handicap, and titan is still with 100%, I think AoMod AI should be 'included' too or the AI scripts can be improved a lot just like in AoE2 where they basically did that themself to improve AI a ton over the original cheaterish ai). It'd be nice to ultimately see an AI that's truly competing like on AoE2 what they did there, and not relying on like handicaps so it basically cheats to get better; that can be like a gamemode where people want to defeat ultra AI and I think it needs to be added because many players like it; in its current state titan AI is just kind of bland, 2x faster, not improved AI that is not great. AoMod AI and changeD AI however is way improved.. The UI thing is a nice suggestion because players are mostly ignorant of player skill, they aren't seeing wins/loss. They are seeing like 1600 is new, lower is like terrible, and don't usually know what the old rating even means. Above 1600 means at leatst they won a few, yet player ELOs are also not accurate for all players, some are higher ratings but they just really don't compare to others at their rating group, while some are extremely good/pro, depending who they played against; I believe that will just fix itself with more players playing the game. I disagree about autoqueue. I think Autoqueue is integral to AoM , I doubt it'll be removed, and as you describe, you seem to hope it's not there because you think like 'apm' (things a 'teenager' can do, or how fast clickingspeed is) is like unique. Yet some people don't want to have their eyes glazed over and don't want to use micro/apm. I actually like that option where you can win by 'both' extreme micro, which will almost always win, or macro, being way far behind or not. I disagree that it's a bad thing that needs changing; it would just be extra effort imo, doesn't take extra intellect. Something for me personally that I can already do; a bad player with like 10 autoqueued units is basically same as a bad player who clicked and has like 8 or 9 anyway. Otherwise I'd like to see crashes fixed, modernized UI (like show player wins/loss), seamless scenario loading (no crashes of course), if possible mods that can be loaded on the fly like in AoE2 which is a much older engine, and a few modernization features mostly.. I don't really think AoM is a big flawed game. I think even with only modders options, including it in, they could add a lot of your map balance changes. Again tho your suggestion about autoqueue or adding on things seems like you 'hope' you'll be better as it will widen the skill gap/increase the skill ceiling, imo that's sort of a cheater's wish. You likely wish players were abit worse and probably feel they'll become way worse than they already are once it's done, because you think 'uhoh theres pros and not pros'. How dare a pro be beaten by some no name who basically outmacroed them because they didn't micro or play well enough! Poor idea of titles being bestowed on people and yet there could be someone out there who beats them but simply doesn't care much. That's imo not a good route to go, in context of autoqueue or additional button presses. You'll probably find it's about the same, and the idea of needing to click every single time for every single unit is just like an effort thing especially how AoM's design is. It could end up drastically worse or considered weird even if yes it does help with some decisionmaking processes. Only people who are truly more braindead would forget like 'oh, I forgot to add these units here' and so on lol. Choosing not to use it may even make a player 'better' but at least it's a choice. Generally autoqueuing will just make you lose if you don't also adjust and understand it, otherwise you'd just have to aimlessly click every single time for every single one which I think is a step backwards and a 'general bad thing' of AoE2 and those games when you've done it already and don't want to just click the button 100 more itmes.

Auto-que had a bug that i don't know if it ever got fixed on the original games. I think it did on EE a couple years ago. When you double clicked on multiple barracks etc. or hotkey'd that group of building and hit auto-que it didn't work. You had to manually go to each individual building and set it to AQ. That should get fixed in the Retold game. There should also be an option under hotkeys to change the AQ button instead of having to do it in the game files.

Thank you for the video Boit Very happy about the news. Hopefully we also get better multiplayer. The multiplayer of AOM EE is not good, there is a lot of lag! Only 1v1 is somehow playable. I am not sure is it because of lack of servers or just the techology is bad. Also too many drops. I would love if they make like in AOE 2 DE possibility to invite friend and find random game. Also if AI has more difficulties it will be wonderful! Also if it apply to the campains as well

I'd like to see the original graphics all put back in so that everyone can run the game ok and it doesn't lag so much. Seriously couldn't care less how pretty it is, smooth game play is way more important. Not really any big changes I want to see, just fix the highlighting animals out of los bug, better pathfinding, make the autoque button more pronounced so you can actually tell if it is autoque'd or not, and don't let it be as buggy and laggy as EE.

Should heroes gain more abilities or power as the game progresses ? in a xp kind of way; they start weak and grow stronger and get a special ability coming mythic age. Greeks have no offensive flying units. Change the water fights... dunno what but smth different; or a new myth units on water

The Population limit definitely needs some work and every unit should only have one population cap number and the population limit should be up to 400 or 500.

I know it has always been an aom feature but i cant help but think a custom game option to turn off fixed tc locations and maybe even a unit cap increase would be nice. I am not advocating for the removal of the mechanic, just a custom game option.

Hey Boit! Something I think would improve the quality of online play would a filter for what rating you're playing with and against. The worst thing in my experience about playing AoM is that it's so rare to find a team game that's evenly matched. I'm not sure what it's like at a higher level, I'm a lower level player. Do you think this is something worth considering for Retold?

I think they should leave autoqeue just for civ units and everything else without. That way u don't need to spam click over something as mundane as keeping villager production which you have to continously do anyways. That way you keep your attention on your army comp and general macro, instead of sweating on making vills. However, the most important part for me it's keep the aggresiveness of the game, the ability to mass army early on and get into fights and if removing aq prevents that, maybe leave it.

I understand that youd love to see the mythology of your motherland in the game, however there are already 3 european pantheons and none from America, India and many other huge regions..I think that would make much more sense.

More Vids like this! I’m confused as to why auto queue is bad. If the viper used it he could easily defeat a low level person using it. Is it just too effective to use in general? I didn’t miss auto queue in AoE 3 cause of batch training, but having to manually select your tc every 25 secs to train a villie can be so annoying

I tried learning AoM Extended a few years ago coming in from AoE2 and autoqueue was weird. I would frequently forget what I had autoqueued or think something was autoqueued when it wasn't. I just find it easier to keep my macro in my head if I'm actually pressing the buttons to train units myself

Settlements add a strategic element to the game. If I can build them anywhere then I would just play Ra, build 3 TCs in my base every game. Haha.

Agreed. Release of AoM:Retold: original three civs but expanded. The later: Chinese and Atlanteans double release DLC with both civs completely overhauled, rebalanced and reworked. And after this release two new civs like Maya/Aztec (which I also highly support) and then either Japanese, Slavic or whatever the majority prefers/wants

@@klavicus2276 I think Japanese would be redundant with Chinese. I think the community wants somethings totally different, most likely the mesoamerican. However I think it would be Mayan rather than Aztecs because Aztecs lived in Medieval Age whereas Mayans lived during the Antiquity already

AoM is (or was) the best RTS ever made. It is the only multiplayer game I’ve ever played that achieved true balance, and the only RTS that ever actually lived up to being a strategy game. And that is because the button-mashing try-hard rushing sweats that dominate other RTS’s would LOSE to people who outsmarted them. And the game would actually progress through all of the ages instead of ending with a five villager rush. So no, removing auto-queue should absolutely not happen. The gameplay should be exactly the game where it stood at the end of Ensemble development, with improved graphics, matchmaking, etc.

Why is Autoqueue not good for Competitive play ? What's the reasoning ? There's skill in turning on and off at the right time, it can also mess up unit production priority so it still has room for optimisation, it can cost you the game if you produce at the wrong spot so it's not JUST making the skill floor higher... I've played aoe2 to 1300 elo, not crazy but hey not TOO bad, while i enjoy the feel of manual unit production I would also rather have more time to set up raids and think about the game a bit more. I really don't understand the reasonning behind not implementing it. I don't see it. It took me quite some time btw to get used to manual queue. This autoqueue thing is a gatekeeper imo.

It’s funny how nothing has changed since these games were new. The mechanical button-mashers who lived on micro and rushes couldn’t break it, and had to actually think. And lose. That’s why this game was so great.

Thats where you are wrong. Its an RTS - and as any other RTS its about your decisions - strategy, but also the execution of your strategy - thats where the RT part comes into play. So shortly..no, its about strategy AND speed.

@@moon2schyzo AQ is a think that improves game experience. You can use your speed to micro your units if you are fast. Not wasting time by repeating same moves in a mechanical way. I am sure that the perfect micro does not exist. So make your micro better and let aq do its job. It was s a very nice tool. Also there is another thing about it. If aq the is off the stream or the recorded games will be unwatchable because of the continuous movement of the screen for no reason to 50 places.

Being able to hotkey barracks and unit spawn just takes away the strategy aspect of the game. It just becomes a game of speed and dextery and less of a game of strategy. If you enjoy manually spawning your units, then go for it nobody is stopping you. Even with autoque there are still plenty of other things to "micro" to gain a advantage over your opponent, its just unneccessary imo and takes you away from the other great aspects of the game

Are people happy with the current Atlantean tech tree and mechanics? I always thought they were boring, as their villagers for one don't require a drop off point and they generally don't need a lot of buildings. Fewer houses due to mansion providing more population, fewer farms because citizens are equal to 3 villagers, thus you build 3 times as few. No drop off sites, you only build one single economic guild. I always imagined the Atlanteans as the civilization that would construct a lot of buildings, or at least as many as the greeks and egyptians. -Rebalance their economy to require drop off points, and perhaps forego the mechanics of the citizen being equal to 3 villagers -Give them more buildings to place -Make the hero upgrade more engaging to use. Perhaps add a building that the soldiers would have to enter to become heroes -Change their method of generating favor, as favor for nothing is not engaging. (Your first town center generates, so you don't have to worry about it early game) Just suggestions.

Titans need either be reworked completely with new/different visuals, being able to walk through water and improving the hitbox. Or delete them completely which i personally also wouldn’t mind cause they are not broken at all but feel so unnecessary even it’s sometimes funny and maybe cool the first few times.

I don't understand the argument for getting rid of autoqueue. Sure, if you want to make the game harder and more micro intensive you can remove it. But why stop there? Maybe villagers shouldn't keep gathering materials automatically and should be constantly re-tasked. Maybe myth units should no longer use their specials automatically. While were at it let's get rid of moving units as a group, it would definitely increase the skill cap to require players to move each unit individually! The point I'm trying to make is that there's "fun" mico, and there's "tedious" mico. It's cool controlling a group of anubites to use their special to jump over a wall and gank some villagers. It's not fun or cool to have to constantly re target your TC just to make sure that your consistently training your villagers.

It doesn’t hurt anybody, your argument doesn’t make sense… if someone doesn’t know how auto que works then once explained it’s very easy to use. I learnt to play aom competitively using auto que. I cannot and will not play without it.
