i distinctly remember my first game of china, i created about 4-5 vermilion birds. they all glitched into each other to occupy the same space, and every time i added a new bird to the group, it would be added to the flying clown car they were all sitting in. so i just had this single abomination death bird (that was in reality just a bunch of vermilion birds occupying the same square) flying around the map and two-shotting buildings. i didn't want to play china after that.

My favorite example of the TotD expansion being completely broken and nonfunctional on release was that the very first thing I did (watch the 'How to play Chinese' video) was completely broken. Whoever made the cutscene apparently left the example Chinese civ in Archaic age during the hero demonstration portion, meaning that the damage was so bad that the Immortals actually lost the fight and the cinematic softlocked, and even that was only after watching 2+ minutes of Immortals hitting myth units over and over. I believe they have since fixed it, but it was an incredibly formative first impression for me. xD

It would be cool if China gained favor by researching technologies, with the added ability to build one or two gardens each age-up, like how Greeks unlock heroes. That gives players incentive to act like real ancient China: win by being more advanced than the enemy.

Yeah, that's one way to make the Favor gain unique, instead of having them gain Favor like the Egyptians. Overall the Chinese need a major overhaul, and they should wait for the playerbase to settle with the main 3 (or even 4) cultures first, and later add the Chinese as a much better developed DLC.

Seems like logical points to me. Plenty of options to connect the Greek and Chinese pantheons if they want to, as the War of Heavenly Horses can attest to. For me the military history of China since the Zhou and especially Han periods has been characterized by two overall themes: mass numbers and amazingly coordinated organization of those said numbers. I think TW Warhammer III's Cathay was on the right track when they had units that were weak by themselves, but surprisingly strong when linked together. Think AoM Retold could definitely do some things along those lines. But I would totally understand if AoM Retold focused on the OG civs first.
@Steelion69
@Steelion69 Год назад
There was an attempt to replicate that by making a lot of the Chinese units have less population than their typical counterparts; unfortunately there's no real way to make this system work due to how costs and population work in AoM, because then the units are either just too pathetic or too strong en-masse against other civilizations.

On the campaing not being linked to the main one i must say that it shodnt matter if the campaing is good. The main story is just a what hapened to Atlantis before during and afther the sinking. You have many good stories and characters you can take, like how Odysseus, Ajax and Chiron are actual characters from greek myths. There coud be a cool campain about the Argonauts and the golden fleece for instance. This allows them to cover more topics and show more characters and not be constantly pulled towards the main story which in my opinion ended whit the Atlanstis campain and dosnt have anyting more to tell.

A cool thing for collectivist China would be that military buildings dont create units. Town centers (and some other building that is not limited to settlements) make a bunch of villagers in bulk at a small comparative discount (instead of one at the time), then the player decides to sent the villagers for resources or to turn the villagers into military units.

Partial opinion here, but I really hope they adopt Return of the Gods mod as official DLC in AoMR. It's highly reviewed and most of their work would already be done for them! For China, I see a big rework as the only viable option. If AoMR is "giving the Definitive Edition treatment" then including them in as-is, in their poorly-received state, would feel like a failure (again). But not including them when they're now part of the lexicon would be tantamount to saying "just forget about our failures, don't look over there... pretty please!". Confronting it head-on and giving them a proper remake and clear/fun core identity is what is needed! It need not be a total top-to-bottom remake, but it needs to be much, much more than tweaking around the edges! Looking to AoE3 for inspiration (Banner Armies, Wonder powers, Rice Paddies, etc) would be kind of cool. The TOTD campaign needs to be completely redone, and the new units in EE need to be completely redone (maybe Hippocrates could go to Heroic/Mythic and Onager could stay?)

Honestly, the average mod or rom hack ive played feels higher quality than Tale of the Dragon. I know its not fair since its comparing an RTS to a lot of different genres, but it just felt really poor quality while playing it, and it felt clear when things was a reskin/restat of some other units. Personally I would say to just, throw the current civ in the trash and just start thinking about it from the ground up again if there is to be a china civ. Having a main campaign featuring all the different Civs is an absoulute must. I have been replaying the original campaign again and I forgot how much fun it is and seeing all the different mythologies collide in an overarching story. If theres a DLC faction post release, I think the better option is to go back into that campaign and add an aditional chapter in it for that faction, rather than an entirely new campaign just for it. That being said, I think extra campaigns based on specific myths would be really cool too. Loved the mini campaign of the golden gift especially since I never seen it before Extended edition. Would be nice to have a chunk of mini campaigns too which play through small myths. Id be more than happy to pay like $5 for a campaign pack that includes a dozen or so missions with maybe some campaign exclusive units in there too that would not work in multiplayer. And of course like everyone new factions would be great to see as long as they're given the care they deserved. Like a lot of people im excited to see Aztecs, or anything mesoamerican, but I do have an unrealistic idea that very probably will never get added. Would be fun to see a second era setting where you fight with more modern factions like folklore, lovecraftian myths, maybe japaneese. I dont really expect it to happen but a man can dream.

As a modder, it would be a disaster for community-generated content if China is removed entirely. Many of the options China provides, from god powers to amphibious units, are integral to many mods, and the longer Retold goes without all the content of EE, the longer it will take for EE mods to get ported over to Retold. The community has already shown, in my opinion, the ability to make civilizations that rival the creativity of the original four, and allowing us to work freely with every tool EE provided will give the game a ton of love and content. I can personally guarantee that if Retold supports modding in the same way that EE does with the same resources available, it will get dozens of new major gods from mythologies across the world -- the single best thing Retold can do is let this happen.

Considering how detailed AoMR will be (based on other DEs) frankly this will not really be an issue (AoMEx is dependent on lone modders that don't have the time to be making 4k textures and models) but even then AoMR will be based on the AoMEx 2.8 source code, so even if most of the soft data (i.e xmls) is removed, it'd be easy to restore it by transferring files over from AoMEx.

I think the next game should include the rebuilt Atlantis from the Titans campaign and add a few scenarios of Kastor rebuilding Atlantis and defending from Raiders then getting interrupted by Ajax and Amanra because of new mythical creatures attacking the Norse lands, Egypt, and Greece. Kastor goes to Egypt Greece, and the Norse lands, and rather than attacking them like in the Titans campaign he defends them and on the way gets spoken to by Arkantos and travels to China with Ajax and Amanra and helps the Chinese defend against a new civ that isn't Chinese because of the tale of the dragon campaign

A core problem for the Chinese is that alot of their unique "features" such as their units and god powers is that they are recycled versions of unused concepts like cataphract, which being a heavy cavalry, was not actually used in China given that they didn't favor heavy units in general. Which goes back to the root cause- a lack of budget and crunch from greedy executives.

I think the Chinese did have a sort of cataphract. Obviously cataphract is a Greek word but they definitely had heavy armoured cavalry that could be called cataphracts.

I have a couple of other things on my wishlist for AoM:R apart from the China reworks. * Manual Myth Unit and Hero abilities. Give us the option to toggle the auto-cast on or off, and to manually target which unit to use the special ability on. It would make the 'assassin' myth units and heroes (Medusae, Mummies, Arguses, Perseus) much more usable as you can more consistently make sure they hit that Chimera instead of a random hypaspist. Maybe for Anubites and Amanra, give them Point Target as well as Unit Target, so they could leap across a wall without needing an enemy on the other side. * Touch up the Replay system. What we have is a good start, but I think Dota 2 sets the gold standard for this. I wanna be able to see the player perspectives, including mouse movements, of not just myself but the others in the match. I wanna be able to skip to specific timestamps, rewind, speed up and slow down more precisely. * Choose your Player Colour in the lobby. Come on, guys, it's been 20 years. Every other RTS out there does this. Basic stuff. Why do we still have to base it on player order? * Standardised hotkeys presets. Natural Selection 2 did this really well - the position of every command in the UI corresponds to the physical layout of the keyboard. So the top left building is assigned to Q, the next one to the right of that is W, the one directly below it is A, etc. So you can look at it and intuitively know which hotkey you need to press to get it. Standardising between civs would be nice as well - knowing that the button for your regular Infantry unit is the same regardless of civ. You can already sort of do this in EE if you want, but it's time-consuming to configure. Making it a default option would be nice and maybe make learning easier. * More detailed tooltips. The advanced tooltips mod on the Workshop sets a pretty good example, but is out of date. Information is always useful. * Lower priority, I know, but if they can get around to it: Fix the triggers in the Editor that cause Desyncs when you run a Scenario in multiplayer.

Yeah, Tale of the Dragon was really, really bad. The campaign needs to be scrapped. Seriously. The only China-unique thing I actually liked was that amphibious myth unit. Not in-game because it sucked, but as a concept. Also, one of the biggest things for me is the Chinese don't make any sense from a history perspective. Other people have gone into this in greater detail, but stuff like the fire lances and some of their other units wouldn't have existed in even close to a similar time period to the other civilizations. Sure, gameplay and fun take priority over historical accuracy, but they didn't even try here.

To make a mounted archer into a counter cavalry, I would give it the ability to shoot while moving, and good tracking. I think you'd keep them from being too good against regular infantry by giving them a damage penalty (or a bonus vs only cavalry). I didn't get all of my ideas in there. @mariosblago94 could just call it Indian mythology. I don't see why active religions need to be avoided. Shows like Supernatural and Good Omens have played around with Christian mythology to great success. And yes, it is mythology. "Mythology" does not denote a dead religion. Historically speaking, China was extremely isolated, which had a big impact on their culture. There simply was no competition with the Emperor as a supreme authority. Greeks, Egyptians, and Norse IRL were in significant cultural contact with eachother. Atlantis is totally fictional, but it's deeply entwined in the Hellenic sphere. A good civilization would need lots of historical contact with other civs to make sense. During the classical age, the only civ that makes much sense would be Babylonian (which would be REALLY COOL).

Honestly my biggest gripe with the chinese was that they didn't feel like they fit the original design or art direction, and felt too much like a mod. As far as theming goes though for new civs, probably the only ones I can really think of that'd properly fit the games themes would be Carthage/Phoenicians, Babylon/Sumeria, or maybe something like Assyria or the Hittites. Though, gameplay-wise, I imagine an Assyrian or Hittite culture would end up playing too similarly to the Norse. Maybe a Phoenician culture could gain favor from generating gold or something and bring new naval mechanics to the game, or a Babylonian culture could buy favor by sacrificing food and be chariot focused.

China needs a full rework but also I do think if they were to add a new set of civs, my top choices would be Hindi/India, Yoruba or Celtic. Barring that I think a bit more variety in the minor gods with not only Atlantis getting charges to their god powers.

I'll be honest, I started playing AOM when I was three years old, and I really liked China when it came out because I like Chinese civilization. However, there were things that I found underwhelming on the history part. I think that they could have done a lot worse, but they still suffered from the problem that China's "pagan" era is still ongoing and made it difficult to pick a time period. They kind of chose the Warring States period to Han Dynasty, which was a good pick and didn't include many Buddhist elements save the monk. They didn't add any firmly grounded historical figures who have since become gods either, like Confucius, Guanyu, or Mao Zedong (mythic age god power: rag with guns!). On the other hand, they have a gunpower unit, heroic and mythic age soldiers that look 8th century, and the vampire that looks 18th century. Moreover, their units all speak modern Standard Dialect Chinese, which is kind of disappointing---reconstructed old Chinese would fit much better. I think that some of this kind of works OK, but I think they missed an opportunity to make China about the Shang Dynasty, which was a perfect fit for AOM, even though people aren't very familiar with that history. The Shang Dynasty (1600-1000 BC) was not only fairly close to the age of legendary Sage Kings (and in AOM's campaign era), but it was also a terrifying empire four times the size of Ramses II's Egypt that conquered pretty much everything they set their eyes on. They were extremely devoted to a pantheon of (in those days at least) bloodthirsty gods and routinely sacrificed thousands of people in exchange for magical favors. They even had priestess-generals like Lady Hao (and we found her tomb with all her weapons!). Idea---Lady Hao meets Amarna in the campaign. On a gaming culture note, I have a slight suspicion that the Shang Dynasty was the inspiration for the Sith from Star Wars, especially because "sith" might be a plausible reconstruction of the modern word 士 (pronounced shir) which means scholar (or gentleman) today, but back then meant chariot mounted knight---what's cooler than that? I think that this older version of China should have figured more prominently in AOM. I hope that Retold includes everything that you wanted plus more of China's valiant ancestral culture. I hope they include the goddess of war and sex the Dark Lady of the Nine Heavens (kind of like Chinese Ishtar), maybe as a unique mythic age god for Nu Wa, given that she's associated with her and some people suspect she is actually an aspect of Nu Wa herself. Maybe a slight reference to later figures like Guanyu in a cavalry upgrade or something and more emphasis on generals. By the way, I really like your content and feel grateful that you are keeping my childhood game at age 21. Keep up the amazing work, and if you have time, let me know what you think! :)

I can agree that the campaign for the China faction of AoM is very lackluster especially it became more of a cashgrab than the passion of what AoM's campaigns were supposed to be and the gameplay itself. DLC itself is very buggy to where it's almost unplayable. Even with the DLC at a discount is not worth for its purchase as it felt like a fanmade mod and not by an official developer. Even those "bonus" units added made the competitive play toned down and rather to appeal to casual PvP. Even though I do have a bias for Norse having a Bogsveigir lol However I disagree to where I think it has potential, but it needs polish and rebalancing.
@BlackOps78321
@BlackOps78321 Год назад
I agree and Horse Archer / Cataphract should be reserved for a DLC for Persia if they make one. China does not even have those units. It was not great, they just threw in units that were in the editor and it made no sense. It was like they were having fun using the mapping tools but there's literally better content by like custom map or campaign creators (made for free). It's usable though more than people think, but it ends up sort of like a joke. I think there should be cheap/spammable units if it's China, with myth units thrown in. As for like Arkantos, honestly I don't care, China is like secluded and they were better not using the original characters as much. I agree that their campaign was terrible and I didn't even complete it because it was just so bad, but the original one was a lot better and more interesting, even so, it was way too easy on most of the maps, good but it could have been more difficult. The main unit composition is boring and basically the chokonu/halb beats most things or trades, then you upgrade to use fire lance, and they just try to do like everything instead of be like a spammy civ that focuses on spamming weak units, and maybe like unique infantry units, which they should. I agree the War Salamander was the only cool thing, a unit that can actually go on land and water, and should have been more spammable. I think you are a little wrong in that, each civ does kind of has symmetry beyond the different units and additions, but, ya China just was bland. You are basically better off spamming the main units and maybe firelancer and that's about it, the cavalry units are underwhelming and expensive.

How to fix china imo: One civ needs special vills that when they die they make a malitia unit that looses hit points over time. Gardens only last so long then they die. Or have a limited amount of resources they slowly trickle then die. Chu ko nu should fire 4-6 shots but have a hard time hitting a specific unit, rather just aim in an area and launch arrows. China is big on honor and family lineage, so maybe have favor be gathered by tending shrines. One god could be every human unit on death gives 1-2 favor or something. I think focusing on more of death is rewarded type game play would help give them a niche. It would mean they turtle to power but have the ability to steamroll late games

The ultimate point is, I think, Chinese are not fun to play. I can't really tell why specifically, but I don't enjoy playing Chinese as much as I like playing as the other civs. They lack personality, as you said. Each civ gifts you with a cool mythic age you look froward to reaching. Greeks give you a special human unit, super cool myth units, and have very personalized hero units. Norse allow you to spam buff giants, or go rag, or evoke an enormous fire-breathing flying dragon. Egypt has tanky elephants, that reshape your gamestyle completely from the earlier stages. Atlantis gets cool myht units and the super fun to use destroyers. What does China allow you to do in later ages? You mostly only get re-skin of other units from other civs or previous ages... You don't like look forward to getting to the mythic age and have fun with a strong and unique army. However, Chinese need to be in retold and need to be massively reworked

I'm not sure if I even want to risk the devs potentially failing the rework. I hate the idea of being stuck with a game where one civilization is this terrible. I would really rather just not have them in the game at all. It also increases the burden of keeping the game balanced, which is one of the main appeals of a new version of the game. I have no idea how well balanced the game is at the moment, but I strongly believe the focus should be on getting the other civilizations in a good state balance-wise before adding a new civilization again.

I don't know how they screwed up China so badly. Dynasty Warriors essentially is their entire Han History. Which has a ton of legendary warriors in they could have used. The Myth units are the most boring versions of each tale imaginable. The Priests are the shittiest Age of Empires rendition imaginable. I have no idea why they have so many cavalry. China had problems for the longest time because the bandits that ravaged them had horses and they didn't. Not to mention that the Mongols were a problem for them for the same reason. They built a giant wall just to force them off the horses to fight them on their land. At this point it would have been more faithful to put Genshin Impact things in the game. While it's not Ancient Chinese lore of any kind it is more faithful to Chinese Culture than what we got in mythologies. I would much rather summon a giant Paimon Titan. XD They should have just did Romance of the Three Kingdoms in AOM. Some of the warriors in that period were so strong that they were literally considered Chinese Gods. I think it would be more fun to have ordinary troops led by mega powerful hero generals. Since there is 3 slots for Civs they can do Jin Dynasty (basically is Wu, Shu, and Wei after they win), Han Dynasty ( Lu Bu, who wouldn't want a Lu Bu Civ), and they can either do Yuan line as one or do Nanman. With these choices it leaves plenty of room for massive deviation. Their Myth units could actually be their Hero units. The Tales of their feats during War are Myths in themselves. Just make them take 50% less damage from Myth unit counters since you would likely only be allowed 1 of each unit. They should be the hardest units to kill in the game aside from Titans. Though as still relevant through the Ages as not to power creep the other civs. If they took this direction then it would be very easy to make a story of them with the other Myth Civs. More so that they could make Chinese heroes play a key part in the story. Make them stronger than the other nation heroes. Alternatively they can do Shu, Wei, and Wu as the Civs instead. Jin is more fun for putting the more famous characters in since they would be dead heroes in this context. If that was ever a problem though then using the 3 main nations the story takes place from is an option too. Then use the auxillery nations to pad each individual Civs Myth unit count. Like they can throw Lu Bu with Shu since he did get along to some degree with Liu Bei. They can throw Yuan Shao or Yuan Shu with Wei since they used to be friends before conquering was a thing for them. Interactions like that. Since these were all factual historical people you don't even need Koei's permission to do this either so long as you don't use the titles of their games such as romance of the three kingdoms, Base it on their actual historical versions, and a possibility to get Koei's permission to use Dynasty Warrior franchise so that you could potentially have them make the models instead. This would free up development time for the visuals and make the key units their maximum potential design imaginable. This is still Ancient China and the most memorial time period for a Chinese mythological story. Instead of using all of these Nerd god names that no one really knows they can use famous names that people do know. Making them massively more appealing. Alternatively they can just design Chinese Civ better so they don't need this drastic of a change. It is kind of a waste not to throw Dynasty Warriors in an RTS though. Each Age up option could be between which hero units you want to use with a gameplay style change option for the non hero units. Could be real cool.
